The list of few horrible entrance tests: 1. JEE MAINS & ADVANCED ( out of 1.4 million students only 10000 are selected). 2. I’m a korean student and Suneung is only 3 days left now. I studied very hard-and well-so i applied for the top 3 universities. FYI i want to tell you that korean college-entrance system isn’t that simple. Suneung is one of the TWO main roads. The other is called ‘susi’ (no idea how should i translate). This system requires your highschool grades (3 years), documents about your school activities, cover letters, suneung grades also, and interview. The ‘school activity’ part includes dozens of presentations and papers, club activities, list of books you’ve read, volunteerings, and more. Students participate in these activities just for their college entrance. I’m one of them, i applied for the universities in ‘susi’ so nowadays im studying suneung and preparing for the interviews(which are hard as hell). +In korea, there’s grade 1~9 (like A~F in other countries) and they are relative grades. Ex) only top 4% of students can get grade 1. It’s different with other countries(like you get A if you reach enough score, no matter how other students did). Korean education system is complicated, dreadful, and awkward, but i’m proud that i did it well. Hope this comment help you understand more about korea!

I am from India, and it's pretty brutal over here too. There's something terribly wrong with the education system in our Asian countries. Here in India, our parents want us to either become engineers or doctors. The exam for engineering is called JEE and for medical college, it's called NEET. Some kids (including me) start preparing for these exams from 5th grade by enrolling in 'coaching classes' ! How is a 5th grade kid even supposed to know what they want to become in future?! I was forced by my parents to join the engineering coaching class in 2013. From 2013 to 2018, I endured an extremely brutal schedule. Wake up at 6am, do your school homework and revision, go to school from 10am to 4pm, come back home and rush to coaching class and stay there from 5pm to 9pm, and come home and finish homework and worksheets before sleeping at 1 or 2am. I feel like I didn't even get to enjoy my childhood because I was forced into this web of marks and ranks and entrance exams when I was only 9 years old. In 2019, I told my parents I don't want to do engineering because I'm terrible at maths, so I had only one option- medical. Now I'm still in coaching, preparing for the National medical school test which is in May next year. Do you guys know how many students enroll for this exam? 1,600,000 to 1,800,000 kids every year. And almost the same amount of kids for the engineering entrance exam. There are thousands of kids like me, who don't even want to be a doctor or engineer. This system turns us into mindless machines with no critical thinking skills or life skills needed to survive in this world. I hate it here. Many of my friends have even attempted suicide. I myself have anxiety disorder and used to self harm but now I'm seeing a therapist. The pressure is tremendous. I'm turning 18 next year which is the legal age in India. My parents have threatened me that if I don't succeed in the NEET exam next year, they will marry me off against my wish, because I'm a girl and my education expenses have made me a burden on the family. Please pray for me.

We had a foreign exchange student during my senior year in high school from Korea. Her name was Sonni and she was extremely smart. She told me that they went to school twice a day where she was from, day and night school. I took both AP calculus and chemistry with Sonni, who flew through those classes literally making a 100 on everything, received a 5 (highest score) on both AP exams at the end of the courses. She said it was very easy because she started learning chemistry and calculus when she was young, around 5th grade I believe she told me. I don’t know the equivalence of 5th grade in Korea, I would guess elementary. She went back to Korea after our senior year. I’ll never forget her!

@@watermel I took AP classes only for the purpose of raising my GPA. I didn’t care or had any real ambitions of passing the actual AP exam. It didn’t matter to me at that point in my life. I got an A in both AP classes and graduated at the top of my class like I wanted, but I didn’t do so well on the actual AP exams. I got a 1 on the chemistry and like a 3 on the calculus, if I remember correctly. They were both difficult to me. I’ve never been good at test taking, especially when it’s timed.

I had a Korean friend in high school too who moved to Australia with only her brother and mother when she was five (her dad still works in Seoul). She moved here because of less competition. Somehow she was exactly like you said, even not experiencing Korean high school but she was incredibly smart, and teachers were kind of scared of her , they held her back after class and said her work quality is that of a university student. Even though I was her best friend I was quite jealous of her because I had a relaxing childhood education and didn’t like studying. She could do everything, science (chem, bio) math, music (piano), art (amazing drawing digitally and on paper, definitely Korean aesthetic inspired so it was really unique for us), sport and language (I was in her Japanese class and she could just pick it up, maybe because it’s an Asian language). For her high school final grade she got the second highest score in her year (it’s called ATAR in Australia used for university acceptance ) at 99.85 (top 1% of the nation, highest was also a Korean). To top it off her family was well off, she dressed amazingly (Seoul culture shining through), was actually popular with friends, pretty, and was good at video games. We’re not friends anymore but we go to the same university (small city) and apparently she’s doing speech pathology. All this talent and she decides to stay in our crappy small city 😭 I guess that’s her parents decision though

About my exams, i kinda did well, let's say they went easy on us due to covid situation effect over educational system regular function, students' mental health and other stuff. As a Korean student who took this yr’s Suneung(CSAT), it is true that a lot of our future paths are heavily depended on this. It is hard, and I have also gone through tough years. But the most fundamental issue through education is that the quality of life and the range of job choices that one could choose from depends heavily on the level of the university one entered. It is the matter of perception people and the society has, on judging others based on their academic achievements. This not an issue of Korea alone, but an issue shared with other parts of the world.

Thanks BBC bringing the nightmares back! Those endless nights, sleep-deprived days... I am sure my lifespan was cut in half during school time. The middle school schedule was like 8 to 4 followed by private institute until midnight (during exam period, including weekends) then high school was like 7 to 6 followed by mandatory studying in the classroom (called yaja) until 10 PM, followed by private institute until 1 AM, no exceptions on the weekends for 3 years. I literally ate all my meals in school, meaning there were no interactions with family for those three years. How sad! These days I hear kids in elementary school runs 9 to 1 (AM) due to 10+ private institutes they need to attend (+ homework). Insane! I guess one point from a pro perspective is that after graduation, you can literally sit through just about anything (even those hard days at work, no problem). There are too many cons though. Many kids in their 20s question a lot about "Who am I" because for the entire school time, rather than finding out what they want/like to do, they just sit and study, memorizing stuff they won't remember at all... Kinda brutal. Already been proven by stats that it is the most depressing country in that regard (not to mention highest suicide rate). Look at Finland how awesome they do - they make a collaborative learning environment unlike South Korea (i.e. super competitive environment). Need to think about this line: "If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together".

As a Korean student myself who hasn’t taken Suneung(수능) yet, I can definitely say that the test puts a lot of stress on students from an early age. Parents and Teachers always say that you can do whatever you want when you finish Suneung and get into college, but I wish they would try to understand that we’re still kids and there are certain things that we want to do at this age. I have a friend who got a perfect SAT score, incredibly intelligent, high grades in everything, hard AP and IB classes, plenty of extracurriculars, and she didn't even get into a program she wanted (I think for medicine?) at a non-ivy. She literally has everything colleges want. She's also an incredible writer. If that's not enough, what more is there? Se struggled so much and literally her entire self-worth is based on grades. As a Korean I wasn't happy for this at all when I was a teenager. Not just the hard exam but we have social pressure to go to a good college. It feels like a failure if I don't pass the exam and don't go to the college. But not everybody can do that, and we just have different talents. I understand we should be selective because of high density of populations but we shouldn't take our happiness and stigmatize as a failure or a lazy and foolish person to youth. @@thedudeontheinternet bro, actually we have the second largest population in the world , and this is the main problem like we have a particular medical exam NEET, around 1.6 million aspirants give this exam , combined knowledge of class 11th and 12th is required in this, same is in the case of jee mains and advanced this is one of the most toughest engineering exam , CLAT which is for Law around 80000 students give this exam. And the most important one UPSC for civil services. Long story short, we are actually not focusing on our all round development , communication skills, decision making skills are some of the most important things that are required , if you want to join any famous corporate company. Life is fucked up, but there is one thing in which all the Asian students and South Asian students are having an advantage over the Western kids is that we know how to work hard, and we don't procrastinate.

I’m Chinese, and I can say my 3 years of middle school life was excruciating. I have tons of homework every single day, and the thing is that you MUST hand it in by tomorrow. I finish my school at 5pm, and I spend the rest of my day doing homework, from 6pm to 10:30pm. I’m not really hard-working so I go to bed earlier than my classmates. My day isn’t easy either. There are multiple tests every single day, small tests, big tests, I don’t even know. Once you set your butt on the chair in the morning, you know you are not gonna leave it for the next 9 hours. Also, we have some really big exams each semester, and each lasts about 8 hours, so that means we write our tests from the morning to the evening, subject after subject. Every time I finish my exams, I feel dizzy and my mind kinda just stops working due to 8 hours of extreme focus. I’m glad I’m in Canada right now, my high school life is much better. As you can see, I even have time to write KZbin comments now. XD EDIT: I didn't go to a private school or something, it was just an ordinary middle school. Those private schools are not for normal people, like me. Finish school at 8pm, go to bed at 2am, and then wake up at 6? No, thank you. I would literally be dead within a week, I still don't know how those kids make it, but it is impressive. Thanks for reading. Good luck on whatever test you have.

What’s not mentioned in the video is that you get one shot at it per year. Unlike SAT, if you don’t like your score, you gotta repeat a year (not graduate) to attempt the test again. It is quite common to see students stay behind 1, 2, or even 3 years to retake the test

My biggest respect for Korea's students. It's just surprising how dedicated they are to study, and also how they keep motivated. As a student I know how does it feel to have the pressure on, thinking that if you fail, you're a failure.. It's very hard. I am in fifth grade and my classmates and I are already in a bad emotional state. Parents here only look at your exam grades, they don't have eyes for anything else. Many of us have entered in depression due to the pressure we have on, imagine when it becomes harder... But even with all that pressure on, you have to learn to find a balance between studying and your life, you can't let your whole childhood be based on studying, so you organize your time, to have time for friends, for yourself and for hobbies, even if it's hard, it's important for your mental health. Well its not like they have a choice lol, that's the benefit of living in the United States, these exams are so hard because it dictates where these students will go in life as adults, un like the SAT which is relatively easy, for example I scored a 1600 SAT, I'm a net admin who went to NYU, my co worker got a 1250 went to community college and is my senior and he's only a year older (I'm 22). This however is not possible in Korea.

This is my high school life in South Korea in 1996-1998: First class starts at 7am. Last self study ends at 11:40pm which is mandatory. 10 times of 8-hour practice test (kind of SAT) a year - 30 times for 3 years. Life was crazy. In my first year of high, I was around 37th out of 54 in my class - I was 3% top in the whole country though. I graduated from top 5 school in Korea. Now, I'm one of Asians in the US who don't speak English well and I'm just a normal pay check to pay check person in the US.

It is not a recent thing that Korean students study hard, it is a tradition and culture that has been passed on for hundreds of years. Moreover, Korea has a large population compared to its territory and is the small country in the world. It is one of the small countries, has no natural resources, and the land is not fertile and rough. Compare it with North America, South America, and Western Europe, which are rich in natural resources, have a large territory, and are rich in food, and you will understand why Koreans have to live like that. your country students go to the school at 9 and finishing at 3, and playing and enjoying sports as they want but Koreans simply choose to study and improve their skills as students and then live a better life as adults. Each country has its own standard of happiness. It may be different, so I hope you don't look at Korea and say it's unhappy. Koreans are living well enough, tens of millions of people enjoy traveling abroad every year, and students have the freedom to make their own choices about their future, and efforts are being made to ensure that those choices are made.

As a premed preparing student we are told to test our endurance and timing from early age. I'm from India. It's true it seems pain to others but believe it all pay off once you get a seat in the reputed collages. It's hard but it's okay. If someone thinking that it lower our social stats, we are there but not glued to it. This dedication makes us emotionaly strong. 🙏🙏🙏

Yeah, also people are mistaking this to be major part of development but sadly its not, students learn what they need to do actually when thry get placed in companies. Before that it's a roundabout of most irrevelant information you'll find till high school and formal knowledge on the field you are going to be employed in college/universities. Speaking as a Korean who has experienced student life both in Korea and England, I must say that this clip does not exaggerate if not underestimate the poor quality of student life in Korea. We especially study hard for about last six years before the exam which is through middle to high school in korea. I for instance studied about 50 hours a week. Now as a grown man, I had forgotten about how harsh it had been for me when I was a student until I watched this video. And I assume it is likewise for every grown ups. It is a shame because as soon as you are ready to speak loud about it, you are relieved of the pressure to study. Students don't really have the power to deny the adults who are responsible for this overheated competition and it's time something has to be done about this issue.

In Brazil, our college entrance exam is probably not as difficult in terms of content compared to that exam in South Korea, but here it is paid, lasts a total of 10 hours and 30 minutes, has 180 questions, and a surprise essay topic to be written. However, considering the history of education in Brazil, budget cuts for education, devaluation of teachers, and an absurd amount of opportunists selling study courses to desperate students, the exam ends up reinforcing social inequality and further alienates those who do not have the privilege of studying for hours on end from the dream of entering college... the worst part is that the colleges here are public, it should NOT be so difficult for students from public schools to pass the exam and enter college.

I had a Korean pen pal and she was explaining to me how she was having panic attacks she began picking her hair/nails until they bled and how she felt stupid. How her parents just felt as though she’s a burden because she wasn’t as intelligent as her other siblings or cousins. She wrote to me how she didn’t even want to live anyone and than the pandemic happened and I never ever got another letter from her… Mental health is important be kind to others and yourselves 💛

It is really bad in Turkey too. I want to share my experience. In the last two years, I studied very hard and I don't know how many times I had a mental breakdown,getting hysteric or sick and only hobby of mine was eating tasty food because it kept me motivated. And I think the worst part is the nightmares. I had them all year and after the exam ,many days I saw the question that I couldn't solve, then, I woke up and cried. It was really hard both physically and mentally. I am so happy that's done. I wish everyone endurance from this nightmare. I know how challenging it can be, but believe me, the results are going to be good and next year you will be great and relaxed. My advice is eating together or hanging up with the people you love it is so comforting and don't believe it is the end of life,if you put in enough effort, it will be all right and even very short-length training or stretching can reduce your stress so greatly .

Welcome to India Where students lives are defined by Entrance exams. Every year thousands of Indian students attempting suicide for not clearing entarnce exams. The list of few horrible entrance tests: 1. JEE MAINS & ADVANCE- Engineering entrance exam ( out of 1.4 million students only 10000 are selected). 2. NEET- medical entrance exams( out of 1.5 million students only 15k are selected) Last but not the least world's toughest exam UPSC - out of 1M candidates only 1000 are selected and this exams continue for 1 long years. Indian education system is made not to do selection but rejection 😭

I grew up in China, school is hardwork, we literally spent every waking hour studying, from 6am to 11pm, I went through a phase of depression due to a change in my family. I didn’t know what it was at the time, I couldn’t study and nothing was getting through my head either, I ranked last in my class, for almost 2 years, and the last year of high school, I “woke up” and studied triple hard to get my grades up, it was really the toughest test.

My high school actually didn’t publish rankings so I was somehow not as hurt. But I was living like a walking zombie, I didn’t care about anything. Even now I couldn’t remember much of it. And it was the last year of high school, my step mother had gotten pregnant and the abuse went up like turbo, I ran away a couple times and eventually my aunt took me in and I was able to get out of that toxic environment and focus on studying.

I tried going in to a special science high school, and had to take an entrance exam because of it. I had to tutor 4-5 hours a day, and review for the whole day after tutor sessions ended. The exams had questions ranging from junior high school math lesson questions to College science and vocabulary tests for high school. I was literally 11 years OLD! And this was in the Philippines, I was so stressed out and I feel so stupid for even trying to self harm because I know I wont get in the school. All those efforts fell down because I actually failed I became such a big dissapointment that my parents hide the fact that I just failed at an entrance exam.

I would really like to see research on how this effort translates into their work when they become adults and how much knowledge these students are really absorbing. It would be a shame if they spent more than fifteen hours studying but could absorb just as much in under eight hours. Since they're learning multiple subjects for the sole purpose of getting high grades, they usually forget all of it right after the exam. Most of the methods of learning are actually through tricks, metaphors, and hacks already! So there's really not much learning involved, it's more memorization, and after the exam they forget all of it, unless they get into a certain field which might help them remember a few of the subjects. It's a very broken system of unhealthy competition, enthusiastic young people are made to hate science and learning in general through these processes.

To all my fellow students even if someone do hard work for the thing they desired from early age, and at the end do not get it. Then do not get depressed and think you are loser or not worth the value. May be you were not meant for that thing, so you should go for another thing. Accept the failure and move on. Do not carry that burden of rejection. It's also not a legit showcase of knowledge as knowing things on paper does not apply to being able to apply problem-solving in real life. I remember how I literally was not able to do absolutely anything else but study 24/7, morning till midnight, and it definitely affected my mental health more than anything. The exams can I just say are SOMETHING else.. they are way too hard on the students. I’m hoping to see a change, I really WANNA see a change, and there definitely NEEDS to be a change considering the fact that kids are literally getting too overwhelmed and taking their own lives :( cruel.

Wow, I’m from Canada and simply imagining the years of time spent on school work over in some of these countries is very saddening. I’m in my senior year of high school and the difference between the education systems is very self-evident. I have a philosophy that applies to me, perhaps someone reading this, but school kills any amount of meaning I get in educating myself. I find thrill and passion in educating myself for the sake of educating myself, not because I had to, but because I wanted to. It’s become apparent to me recently just how strong my apathy is towards school, and now I just can’t wait for it to be over. And when I hear some of these people in the east sharing their thoughts on it, I realize I actually don’t even have it that bad, which is slightly concerning. But what’s clear to me is that these education systems are conflicting with our mental health. Anyone in the east who’s tired of the system, or anyone going through hard times maybe, don’t let school push you around, and I know school is essentially forced into priority for a lot of you, but try to like yourself as much as you can, you’re going to be with you for basically your whole life. Don’t let school take pre-eminence. Take care of yourselves, folks, best wishes from 🇨🇦

Hey, another Canadian, wassup. I actually have this « must outclass others » mentality which I really hate, because I just tell myself, « that’s what your employers will want from you. That’s how the world works » But I’ve always been grateful to be born in a country where the system doesn’t think the same way I do. Especially because my self-esteem would get crushed. It reminds me of jee. I can relate how when you're preparing for something like this, you can't have fun without feeling anxious. I panicked 100 days before exams and a lot of other kids did too. It's an unreal thing to know when it ends. Sometimes it works out, sometimes it doesn't and I've accepted that there are many smarter than I am. These exams take a huge hit on your self worth and esteem. It feels heavy, I know, to anyone out there preparing for such exams, remember to breathe and know that this is just an exam, a very important one indeed but the grade defines how you did on exam not your worth. Breathe and know that this isn't where it all ends. There's a lot more to life. You'll get there. Keep fighting!

Pls tell me the steps to this , in here there's only this type of exams like this kor video we watched for any course that u can get job , my fate is gonna be this ,wasted already a year after my 12th , literally hell, I hate nothing more than this , I'm not completely opposed to studying but this kind of things is really toxic studying mentally and physically which I don't want cuz I'm sure I can't handle the pressure ! So pls tell me ur path , I searched everywhere I couldn't find it

Even as a 14yo Im already feeling so overwhelmed by these tests and results. My health was being very bad during tests. I couldn't get proper sleep and could barely have any time for myself. If online classes weren't a thing I would've gotten a hard time as soon as I turned 13. These people have no heart. Let children enjoy their young time because of you their lives are becoming difficult day by day. They know this happy time is only temporary yet they're trying to cut out more of their happy time than it already is. I cry a lot thinking about my childhood I miss it so much. I wouldn't have to work like a computer and I could go out to play with my friends. It's sad I wouldn't experience the same thing anymore. If I was in charge of education for the world I would make it very easy so they can also live a happy life. I get my results in June please pray that I pass

Dude your journey will start now 8hr to 12hr then you qualified IIT or NIT then after graduation 5option come business,job,Gate for mtech which requires 9 to 12hr,CAT/GMAT 3 to 8hr,gov job like ISRO take 15hr of study and UPSC is dream job which is most hardest brilliant people study 8to 12hr without leaving gap normal ka pta nhi...wse bhi this moment you don't know what to do after 10yr you realise what had I done Good luck 👍

It's 5 hours now..Then let 12th come..That will make it 16 hours without you realizing..You will need to tackle 12th theory , homework , 11th revision and then practice questions from 11th...

We do exactly the same in Iran ( the exam is called Konkur ). It's like HIGHLY important and has a massive effect on one's future. We try really hard for years. I can feel every single word that they say in the video. The interesting thing is, I finally managed to go on a trip with my friend, right after the day we had taken the exam! P. S. The duration of our exam is a little bit shorter than the one in Korea ( it's about 4-5 hours, instead of 8 ) and students often run out of time.

School life in China is perhaps even tougher.I am a Chinese and I have just gone through three traumatic years of high school. There was no such thing as weekend when you need to stay in school from Sunday 7p.m. to Saturday 6p.m. Cell phones were strictly banned in school, we would turn in our phones the moment we walked into the classroom on Sunday nights and got them back when we were ready to go home on Saturday afternoons. Those relentless days started at 6:20 a.m. and ended at 10:30p.m. when we crawled into our one-meter-wide wobbly bunk beds in the tiny dorm of 8. But most of us would turn on a nightlight and continue to study till midnight even though we were forbidden to stay up late. We had a minimum of 5 tests a week, each lasted for at least 1.5 hours. I can still vividly remember the sensation of burning in the winter when I was trying to figure out as much as I could in the 2-hour math tests. Horrible memories.

@@ernestgrantoza6096 I am a college student now，and things are just a lot easier. My high school is one of the best, so most of us worked hard and ended up quite well. But I don’t think this kind of pattern would be the best for everyone. It’s harsh but we didn’t have a choice.

Dormitory schools in Korea are similar to those in China. Dormitory-type schools naturally confiscate cell phones. This applies equally to general schools, not dormitory-type schools, until 10 p.m. After all classes are over by 16:30, I study the rest of the school until 22:00. Certain subjects take tests every day (English), and you have to do the assignments given by the teacher of each subject every day. Reports, presentations, etc. should also be prepared. On the day of the report and presentation, when I finish this, I only have two hours left to study. After school at 22:00, I go to the academy by 00:00. Or I go to the study space and study the rest. When I got home, it was 1 a.m., and I woke up at 6:30 a.m. to go to school. This is my experience, but it is the life of a general high school student.Dormitory school comes home on Friday, and they go to the academy on Saturday and Sunday to study. In the case of high school students preparing for college, it is often dawn when they finish their studies on weekends. I became a college student now and became relaxed. I hope both students from both countries will cheer up.

Korean Here. The reason that we Korean accepts this kind of gruelling system is.... mainly that it looks fairer than other means of testing. Other means of testing we had tried were more susceptible to cheating by powerful people and have been raising many scandals, like Korean version of 'Operation Varsity Blues'. It seems we're stuck here as long as we loves fairness.

But this is far from fair from what I can tell: the exam is too long, which will certainly favour those who have slept better/better stress resistance or more endurance. After the second exam, I'm betting most of the students are already knackered.

@@tonygorilla8928 As you can see in this video, there are students who decide not to take this test. There are many other ways to go to college. And in this exam, there are 5 subjects and there are 20 minute breaks in between and 1 hour lunch break, and in addition, you can choose what subject test you'll take. You don't need to take all the subjects.

Because even if most of the people have the option of not choosing this mode of examination those who do will still face fatigue and burnout on varied levels

i relate to them so much except im not preparing for an extremely difficult exam, but rather its more of a day by day routine of just eating studyig and sleeping and having most of your life pass by without you even noticing it. i truly hope they can pass the exam with their desired scores in mind because props to them, im already struggling with only one day off throughout the week and they dont even get one day off to rest

Wow, a lot of us take a whole bunch for granted. I was such a care free spirit up until college, and it’s scary that for these kids this one exam makes a difference between succeeding in their adult life or not. At least personally I was able to brush off my past mistakes and still have a good shot at building a great future. This is plain cruel and I hope one day things can be different.

Thats how good we have it in the US. A pretty decent life with half the effort. Entrance exams are optional here. Its not actually an entrance and more of just a general knowledge test (SAT ACT).

This is hard on young kids in S Korea losing their joyful time being young. But it produced results for S Korea being one of poorest country to richest country in 1 generation but also produced lot of pressure to young kids. S Korea need to come up with new education system to be more balanced with personal life with education.

Agreed. Thay are actually in the time of "running" now to pursuit something but one day that kind of thing will be replaced. And I think this kind of way is a very smart way and other countries that are still poor and bad in human resources must absolutely follow how government of Korea runs their country.

No it doesn't. These tests don't do anything positive for the country. There are so many examples around the world of better educational systems.
