This isn't showing that Koreans have a better understanding of English than British people, it's just showing that their tests are unnecessarily hard and obviously focus on aspects of English that are completely irrelevant. If you have a test that somebody who is fluent in the language cant pass while somebody who is not can, then the test is doing a bad job at determining your skill in that test.
@perakojot6524
@perakojot6524 2 жыл бұрын
The problem is that ppl that create those test are themselves pretty poor in English. While the answers are formally correct, as well as a use of grammar and syntax, the phrasing, the use of vocabulary and particularly semantics are totally inaccurate.
@irisflower9030
@irisflower9030 2 жыл бұрын
Very true! And the real testament is that most or many Koreans do not speak fluent English by the time they’re done with school. As a contrast, I started studying English in Russia at 9. By the time I moved to the US at 15 I was fluent so much so that I could take trigonometry during my sophomore year, my first year in the US, without difficulty. It seems like this test is not at all indicative of the actual knowledge of the English language.

All this test proved is that cultural bias exists in standardized testing. Here we have English students that have shown good deduction skills, cognitive understanding and problem solving. The test is formatted to help Korean students not to read the text but to decipher what keywords and clues will lead to the pre-generated answers. It does not encourage independent thought or comprehension. It produces good test takers that follow directions without question.
@HopeeInk
@HopeeInk Жыл бұрын
Exactly, but also that’s lowkey how schools and higher education works in general. I remember taking one of my final examples in English and it was tbh quite similar to this (I’m German). As a native speaker you get quite lost, because you’re not trained into finding those keywords.
@HopeeInk

Schooling is about recollecting memories and realizing patterns, they don’t encourage independent thinking at least in exams, because it’s quite impossible to standardize that and give grades accordingly.

Not really. The SAT tests for “scholastic aptitude” - by way of logic and verbal reasoning. They are somewhat testing your grasp of vocabulary and grammar but the real point of the “reading comprehension” section is to test your critical thinking. It is actually a good primer to the formal academic writing you will encounter in university, ie reading theory in the humanities or social sciences. As far as measuring “independent thought” typically there is a writing portion as well where the focus is more on rhetorical ability. source: I barely tried in school but I aced my SATs... (I will say that the structure of these exams is more geared toward those with a knack for logic, puzzles, word games etc.)

I'm an english teacher in korea - some of these kids don't even know the names of the letters in the alphabet, but will read full passages and pass exams. The way the curriculum is taught to these kids is absolutely ridiculous. Some of my top scoring students can't even hold a basic conversation in English, yet they would easily be able to do this reading section at the drop of a hat. Memorization and robotic test prep isn't really about learning the language at all.
@ittybittymouthful

I heard this from friends who've taught in korea as well. Absolutely excel in written "textbook" English but can't hold a basic conversation. They need to revise their teaching methods. I suddenly remember my Spanish teach from high school. She never spoke a word of English and emphasized conversation and interactive lessons. We hardly read from textbooks or workbooks.

But foreign language learning in many places doesn't help anyone to speak that foreign language. I'm from the Caribbean, and we learn Spanish and French on my island for yearsssss but no one can actually speak any of those languages. It is simply part of the curriculum. I just feel a bit bad to see so many people coming down on Korea specifically, when I think the real issue is that: teaching a foreign language in school for a couple hours a week, with students having no way to practice said language, leads to students being unable to speak said foreign language. Edit: I just want to let you know that I know my comment was unnecessary. I totally got your point, I just felt like defending them for some reason lol.

@@ittybittymouthful My Spanish teacher was the same. Our speaking grade was measured by how much Spanish we spoke to her and each other in class, so that really was a good motivator. She also taught outside the textbook and our lessons were based on discussing articles, literature, and video media from around the Spanish speaking world, which was cool because we got to learn vocabulary differences between European Spanish and Latin American Spanish (and even within Latin America there were some major differences). I still remember a lot of my Spanish today thanks to her teaching style.

The questions on that test are ridiculous. I have a Masters in TESOL, and I tried a bunch of questions from it. I barely got half of them correct. It's a test Korea needs to rethink and make it more like the English we use, and not the Korean/Japanese mathematical English they teach in Korea.

But even tho English is my native language I would fail this exam as I wouldn’t be able to analyse the question’s meaning and the text’s meaning and answer all in approx. 1.5 minutes/question. These 2 questions alone took me 10 minutes. Idk…these don’t feel too different from actual essay questions I’ve gotten. But I feel bad Korean students are the ones doing these….why?

As a teacher in the US I love these British high schoolers. They are very well spoken and seem well mannered also. I'm sure, like all of us they have their moments! But they really do shine and have wonderful, charismatic personalities! And they are correct... I think our educational system in the west has slipped, but perhaps the Korean system could lighten up just a bit ... I hate to hear of young people being so, so stressed and even potentially harming themselves because of exams that will not necessarily determine your whole future. Stay strong and fighting!

I just have to say though- I answered the first Korean question truthfully read all the sentences and answered number 3. Surprised I got it right. I think this test would be harder for people in Korea because English isn't their first language but if you were taught to learn and revise in this teaching style you could definitely ace a multiple question choice paper in 70 minutes. Question and exam paperd in the UK are never multiple choice.

I knew several Koreans in grad school who could barely communicate in English, made elementary grammar mistakes, but had fantastic verbal scores on the GRE because they basically just memorized long lists of archaic words that only ever show up on tests like that. It's simultaneously so impressive and also so pointless that they do that. Other than the actual exam, that time could be so put to so much better use, even if just to learn English.

As a Korean med student who’s never lived outside of Korea before, I’d always finish this exam(45 questions) in like 40~50 minutes and go to sleep. The thing is, these students in the video were all new to the questions and the exam itself, but actually the order&pattern of questions are always the same, each year. Only the passages are new. So the students would take loads of mock tests before actually taking the exam, and train so that they’d know where to look at/read even when they’re facing an unfamiliar passage. It’s more like training for the exam itself and not studying a language 😂 Some of my friends nailed the test and wouldn’t be able to have a small talk with native English speakers +)This doesn't mean that the exam itself would be easy though, since u still have to be able to comprehend all those sentences and vocabularies. For most students that is hard enough

That's actually very similar with the exams to apply for uni in my country. Every subject has its own pattern, students can almost remember, for example, what question #15 would be about (it'd be a different question every year, but from exactly the same part of materials). I hate it so baaad it's really stressful but many people would probably pass the exams pure by luck.

In the Philippines, we study the English language so that we can apply it in our daily lives. Not only a means to pass your studies or get good grades. One can learn better if what we're learning in school is more practical and can be applied outside school. That's the point why we study right? I hope the Korean education system will be improved for the sake of the students, it might be frustrating for them.

I have no trouble finding the right answers, probably bcs my school also use the same type of questions for our english exam. Once you understand the pattern u can get the answer by glance. The different is, korean use non practical words to make the passage looks harder bc sometimes u really dont have to understand the whole paragraph to get the answer. you only need to choose which one stand out more. Which mean, the whole exam doesn’t test their understanding and comprehension of the language itself.

I used to teach English in Korea and even assisted with test preperation at the middle school level (format is all the same starting in middle school) and I think there is a misconception about English education in Korea. Korean students aren't taught English to speak it, they are taught in regards to what is seen as eductional prestige in their country (what looks good on paper, that can propel and solidify your employment in an elite company). Most Korean students don't care about learning English for communication purposes (many students score high on the English part, yet have no plans of stepping foot outside of the country) they care about "learning English" for presitge, high-end job placement and the status it gives. Students who actually WANT to learn English or know how to speak English, don't learn through school; they learn in their own time through hobbies, media, engagement, immersion, high interest in the language and being very open to speaking with native speakers whenever possible (just like things you would do if you wanted to genuinely learn a new language).
@nagnusyo
@nagnusyo 3 жыл бұрын
I agree. If you wanna learn how to speak and communicate in English, you should go abroad, not studying for the exam. For English proficiency, IELTS is actually valid in my opinion. In fact, many people who have lived abroad understand what the problem is. So many educated Koreans are deciding to live abroad for educational purpose. But the funny thing is, I found people tried to justify this problematic English exam. They are saying like "The exam tries to evaluate students' academic paper reading skills." "The exam pursues on finding people who has high intelligence." None of these arguments doesn't make sense.

Korean language will sound funny and strange if they are taught to speak it, because codeswitching is very much possible, like what we do here in the Philippines, here, English is very much necessary for communication purposes, in preschool upto the end of elementary the rules are very strict compared to highschool to college, its necessary to speak in english only, if you speak in filipino or in any other filipino lang, they give you such creative punishments, like paying money everytime you talk in filipino or you're the badge holder 👀

Personally, the test was manageable and i did decently well (missing only a few questions). In retrospect the only reason i did well is because my parents are literature teachers and i have been reading since I was two. This just goes to show that it doesnt mean people in Korea have a better equipped English skill set, it just shows how unbelievably strict and high the standards have been set for Korean students.

The test isn’t just “hard.” It expects Korean students to correctly analyze formal texts _full_ of logical inconsistencies and improper word usage. Like putting “while” between two harmonious sentence components (“then” would make much more sense). The sentence structure does not follow a consistent rhythmic style, making reading difficult whether you speak native English or not. The text isn’t just verbose, but overloaded with information that isn’t supported by necessary stylistic organization.

If the questions are geared towards testing the students' ability to say construct sentences that are precise and easy to understand, writing passages that sounds graceful, comprehend older literature etc, those will be very useful.

yes it is ridiculous!! their English tests are so much harder than ours here in Sweden yet Sweden is top 2 of the countries with the best english for second language. Like why why are those tests so hard if most of them have a problem speaking English in the first place? It's like they have to study word association instead of the actual language that people use. I feel bad for them :(

This test does make sense in English, it’s just very weirdly worded and it took a lot of time to get through only because the language used was weird. In a sense, the first question would have been much easier if the passage said “Shared humor is a good way for people to bond together because 1. Humor helps make people share their experiences 2. Makes people feel included in a group 3. Humor is good to use in commercials 4. Shared humor is almost a requirement in a group setting. This wording makes it super obvious which one doesn’t fit. But the thing is that when formal language is used, people who aren’t used to it have a harder time understanding what exactly is being said. Since it’s said in a way that no one ever talks in that language. It even took me a second to understand the first part of the passage honestly and the difference in test formatting did not help. In conclusion, shout out to Koreans for surviving this testing experience. You all are getting scammed 😅 stay healthy, sleep well, and all that good stuff

That passage is filled with unnecessary big words that are not only repeated over and over again to cause confusion but aren't really necessary. The gist of the entire first passage is simply "Life experiences brings people together and when a funny moment is experienced by a group of people, their bonds are much stronger." I guess I can only say that now after my brain has developed a more at 29 but there really isn't any need to have these big words in a passage like that...

not from korea, but the passages just feel badly written in my opinion. shoving random words and making simple concepts obtuse in a passage doesn't make it more intelligent, it just confuses the reader and makes the passage fail at it's purpose (to inform/to describe). one example of this is "One team told repeated stones about a dumpster fire, something that does not seem funny on its face, but the reactions of workers motivated to preserve safety sparked laughter as the stories were shared multiple times by multiple parties in the workplace." First sentence, seems fine. Second sentence, also fine. Third sentence: - goes on for too long, making it wordy - has extra information that aren't clearly marked (workers are motivated to preserve safety), making that part even harder to follow - looks like it's just trying to increase the word count ("were shared multiple times by multiple parties in the workplace", or ya know, just say "were shared across the whole workplace")

I used to study for the SAT for an entire year in high school. I agree that most of the vocab and reading were not very practical in daily use. I guess they were just trying to test our reading comprehension and critical thinking skills rather than the language itself. There were tips and tricks to go through the reading quickly, and after like hundreds of problems you'd become quite efficient in solving them xD A lot of the passages were taken from the classics as well, so the language always felt archaic and overcomplicated.

English is my primary language but I could also understand the questions pretty well. I’m in college though and have a lot of practice reading dense research papers. Versus with a second language, you’ve always put more focus into it.

@micadanna644
@micadanna644 2 жыл бұрын
@@gamegeekage I’m sorry to say but, most Americans would not be able to comprehend even a sentence in any of the two passages shown. This is coming from a non native American who lived here for 20 years. I’ve learned, taken tests, and studied with Americans, and the level of English they teach here is getting easier and easier because students can’t pass it. The difference isn’t intelligence, rather the way of teaching. Places with English as the native language will have more difficulty than non English speakers because natives mostly learn English by being spoken to. As generations have passed, slangs are created in the language, spoken to the children, and that’s what they learn. They create shortcuts in sentence structures while non natives are taught “proper” English structures which sounds more “formal.” These kids most likely struggled because they’re “native” speakers. Non English countries teach English strictly because that is what they expect English to be and they cannot catch up with the slangs created. I moved here when I was 10, but when I arrived, everything that they were teaching from my grade to three grades after were things I’ve already learned from my native country. From science labs, English, and math…other countries are just more advanced in teaching

As an American, I can assure you that 99% of Americans (and probably anyone growing up in an English speaking country) would score less than 20% on the reading comprehension and writing portion of the SATs (*which is an exam created in America*). That just goes to show that America's level of education is sad, and that you probably need to stop being so ignorant and try to blame others for your ineptitude (although being ignorant and blaming everyone else is very American LOL)😢.

The channel actually hand picks the most difficult questions from the exam, and giving the median time to answer them 1min/question. In reality the test comprises of a lot of easy questions that can be answered within seconds. Thus even being wrong at all the complicated ones doesn’t immediately equate failing as it can be compensated by the easier ones. As a south asian kid who encountered these types of passages for countless times I can assure you the given passage made sense to me. The structure is so familiar to me as we had similar passages during our junior high. That doesn't mean we're any better than them. We are trained(extremely guided) to face these passages anytime. I remember during my board exam days I've attended 7 coaching classes for each subjects where 2 of them covered English 1st and 2nd paper. The pressure we had to face those days were beyond terrible.

Similar thing happens here in America. We’re taught how to pass a STAAR test or the SAT without actually fully comprehending the material. We just know what the evaluators are looking for and cater to it. That’s why hardly any of us are coming out educated. It’s not really being taught and we’re paying the price.

As an asian I can confirm that these passages don't make any sense at all. As someone who takes the test, you're not supposed to read them but to scan for certain keywords. They've been designed to unnecessarily consume your valuable exam time and to exhaust your mental capacity as quickly as possible. This is how they facilitate the artificial sense of competition. They force kids to do excessive amount of tests in limited time to distinguish students who invest more in private tuition (both time and money) from the rest.

I live in the Philippines and we have English as our second language so believe me when I tell you that this is not how we use English in real life. I don't get why Koreans are forced to learn complicated sentence structures when their priority should be forming English sentences that are easier to understand when communicating orally. Not only will this makes things easier for Korean students, but also helps the country pursue globalization. No English native would want to listen to a person rambling with words they picked up from the dictionary just for the sake of sounding good.

Hello there, I also agree to your point. I've read here in some korean citizens' comments that it isn't used for communication rather for entering the university, getting good grades and understanding complicated structural grammar in the thesis when attending in the university. However, I don't agree with them. Building up basic knowledge will make it easier for them to understand and comprehend complex sentences. It is not only meant for communication as they've said but we also use it for education. Their view in studying english is somehow the same in learning mathematics.
