Reasons Cartman deserved partial credit for the joke: 1.The topic of 'fish sticks' came up only because Cartman asked for different food to snack on. 2. Cartman saying 'yeah I like fish sticks' is when Jimmy hears the similarity of the words the joke is based on. 3. Cartman is the first to give the joke validity by declaring it is funny. 4. Cartman is the one that pushed for trying the joke on others making it the sensation it became instead of isolated in Jimmy's stand up. 5. Cartman himself personally tested the joke further at school. Cartman totally deserved half; Kyle is wrong on this one in my opinion.

While Cartman didn't write the joke he was involved heavily in the creative process as a wall for Jimmy to continuously throw things at until something stuck. In a weird he did help write that joke. Another angle that people don't consider is marketing. Cartman basically helped spread that joke in a way that Jimmy couldn't. In fact I'm positive that him pushing the joke literally telling everyone in school about it gave it traction and eventually turned it into a viral countrywide sensation.

Mencia's show was still on comedy central when south park dropped this. Ned stumbled into success because they needed to replace Chappelle's show after he walked away, so they basically threw all that money at mencia to do a skit show with mexican jokes instead of black (we all know chappelles was more than just that) The Rogan incident may have started his undoing but this episode was like Matt & Trey bitchslapping Mencia off the network and reclaiming the throne.

If it hadn’t been for Cartman they never would have been on tv or gotten credit for writing the joke. Cartman was the one who asked for fish sticks in the first place. The actual writing of the joke is only a small portion of all that happened and Cartman is the one who turned the joke into something profitable and garnered national attention Jimmy could have never gotten this prestige on his own. Cartman did not write the joke but the rest of the episode never would have happened without Cartman promoting and working the proper channels for the joke to be what it became.

Cartman is probably responsible for about 20% of the Joke. If he wasn't there complaining about fruit, Jimmy wouldn't have mentioned Fish Sticks... So it WAS a two person effort... just not 50/50. I think it's fair to say they came up with it together, everyone already knows Jimmy is the funny one, and likely did the majority of the work... once you try and break down who did more you get into fights. Of course it spirals out of control but the first third of the episode Cartman did nothing wrong... which is saying something.
