I'll agree it was a downgrade from Stick of Truth. The gameplay got better and the story suffered a little bit, but it's a solid game. That being said I'm hoping the sequel is a team up with Butters as the main villain, just tormenting South Park/the group. Will probably end up as anime styled ninjas/samurais. Or maybe Ninja versus Pirates.

Real reason Chief was killed off was because the creators of South Park had a kneejerk reaction to what they thought was Isaac Hayes rage quitting over the Scientology episode, despite the fact that Hayes defended the show's brand of humor (while admitting he had objections) during an interview about said episode. It came out Hayes' "rage quit" was issued in his name by his Scientologist "friends" right after he had a stroke and was unable to make any such decisions.

Nah. I can't see it. Andromeda came out pretty late in the production of SP:FBW, and it doesn't really fit. I see it as social commentary, in two ways. The first is pretty surface: in the real world, your race does affect your entire life. The show may make fun of tokenism, but it does acknowledge that black people have a harder time. The second is commentary on how this is completely at odds with how video games work. We can make our character look completely different, and it never matters. Ironically video games are more egalitarian than the real world. I also see a possibility that they had actually considered having it actually affect the difficulty of the game, but realized how that could feel unfair to people who just wanted to make a character that looks like them. Still, they thought it was a good joke and commentary, so they left it in. Given how much press it got, I think they made the right decision. The only downside is that pretty much none of us got to experience the joke first hand while playing.

Good review. I definitely agree with Joe. The game overall in design is better but the execution in some areas and the story took a hit. Still enjoyable but the Stick of Truth is still a better game aside the combat being too simple.

I finally finished this game yesterday. I beat the Stick Of Truth back when it was released, but plan on replaying it once I get through all the "but whole" DLC. I think I agree the first one was better, but that's like saying Master Of Puppets is better than The Black Album. I will point out that this game is way longer than I expected and almost overstays it's welcome toward the last 2-3 hours (if you're like me and play through it in a couple of days), but talk about value for your money. Like the show, a lot of situations leave you giggling "what the fuck" to yourself and admiring the creators humor and wild imagination. Combat also gets surprisingly rewarding once you get the hang of it and start unlocking new allies and powers. Edit: I forgot to mention I experienced absolutely no bug related issues playing this on PS5.

I did like the gameplay alot in this one, even though im a sucker for traditional turn based combat. I liked that the game was more difficult than stick of truth, it was very early on that you could steamroll that game without even using the add ons for weapons and armor. I thought this game was plenty funny, probably not as funny as the stick of truth, but i still liked it a ton. The ending was pretty sour though. Even though it would seem unfair to put a more satisfying ending in the dlc's to come, i hope they do. i'd really like a little better closure.

Joe, loved your South Park review on the whole but I really, REALLY, have something to point out. Please go back to your review of "The Fractured But Whole". (The finished review) There's this one part where you talk about Craig & Tweek's Ultimate Move. At that point you mention that you love the song that plays during their animation, then you cut to yourself singing it. Here is where I call your attention!!!! Watch the contrast between You singing the song and getting down, AND then watch Joe who is just not particularly amused and looking at you like "Dude Really??" Like I said, I loved the review but watching Joe sit through you singing the Craig and Tweek song, is so priceless. I love it. Keep up the energy and keep 'em coming.

When playing on PC, I had a LOOOOT of game freezes in fights. Funnily, they were easily fixed once I knew how: just alt tabbed out, tabbed in, and it worked again. Had to use this a few times in the end, but once I knew how to work around it, I was fine. I enjoyed the game a lot despite these little glitches, especially through the latter half.

Here's a defense of the ending. SPOILERS DOWN BELOW Throughout the game we are shown that this is a more grounded experience than Stick of Truth. There is no government conspiracy that involves the new kid and his farts, there's no aliens, or Taco Bell, etc. Granted, while this more grounded experience is happening, we are confronted with several radically larger elements. The New Kid literally controls time with his farts. Rather than say "Holy shit dude that's the craziest thing ever" the kids around him giggle and wonder how it can be used in the game, and that's about it. In fact, they're more annoyed you use it than anything. Another element are the cops. The cops are literally sacrificing black people to an eldritch god that consumes black people and gets sick from white people. Not ONCE do the kids question this during the discovery, or after its death. You don't even really wrap up what the fuck just happened, you kill the god, the black people are free, you get potentially molested by Jared, and that's it. Why? Well the kids don't need to worry about that, they found Scrambles and freed Classi, they don't give a shit otherwise. So what's the antagonist supposed to be? Every turn the kids reject larger aspects for their grounded child-sized problems. And so the antagonist ends up being none other than Cartman's hand. Because Cartman wanted $100, and it just spiraled a bit hard. He doesn't once think it's too far, he just wants the money so he can make his franchise, and when the franchises combine with him no longer at the helm he gets pissed. New Kid literally goes back in time to stop him, and once he does... well that's really it. The kids again never really question it, so New Kid is left to stew with the ramifications of his choice - something that Professor Chaos brings up. And that's the ending. I think, thematically anyway, it's perfect. New Kid is silent, so his actions, his powers, his scope, it's all silenced. The kids instead just don't give a shit and have simple problems that just happen to interact with larger scale entities and elements, but nothing is ever questioned much, nothing is ever giving the level of attention it needs, they just shrug and say "Well that was weird" or "The fuck was that?" and move on. I prefer it this way. The giant scope worked well in Stick, because the whole game did that degree of size. Everything was larger than life. Here, everything feels like a kid's game, only clearly quite a few parts of it are not kid friendly. And I almost prefer it that way, but it is quite polarizing. It will not hit nearly as much love as Stick, we can already see that. But I like it, it reminds me of older South Park, like the first Towelie episode - the boys just wanna play Game Sphere, meanwhile a literal alien invasion is uncovered and living towel cloning with it. But the boys merely say "No no, don't care, where's Game Sphere" That's Fractured But Whole. It might seem fractured, but I do believe it is a whole entity.

There's nothing inherently different about the ending in terms of it being Mitch Conner or something else. Yes, it's a video game. The ending still had a boss battle beating the antagonist, the plot threads were all closed up, etc. The point of contention is thematic quality. Do you have a reason for somehow claiming the ending "would not work" despite it working totally well for me and plenty others?
