This season of South Park has already gotten off to an interesting start, with the series taking on shady biopic producers, corporatized weed dispensaries and the Chinese government. But perhaps most interesting has been the show’s take on personal responsibility as it relates to dealing with oppressive regimes, vaccinations, and plain old ‘tegrity. To find out more, let’s dive into this Wisecrack Quick Take on South Park and freedom.

@@fh2135 I live in Hong Kong. The mainland govt is socialist. You've never seen people who obsess over money until you've seen the mainland Chinese. Under capitalist governments, you can at least afford to care about other things.

@@bobs_toys I'm from mainland China. I agree, few people in the world obsess over money as much as mainland Chinese, but I disagree with your claim about the government. Neither the HK government or the CCP care much about the people (look at how both are treating the protesters). America under Trump doesn't either. Russia under Putin sure as hell doesn't. All four governments are different in style, but all four are highly capitalistic. China may love to invest in infrastructure, but their other policies are questionable at best. Chinese socialism barely exists today. Healthcare is expensive as hell, colleges are steadily becoming more expensive, and you can't even start a new business without bribing a government official. Everything that is wrong with the US (where I currently live) is slowly showing up in China. It's not simply a matter of communists vs non-communists (China hasn't been actual communist since Mao died). True socialist governments such as Germany and Nordic countries are much better at caring about other people and can still afford it. HK could learn a lot about a better form of capitalism from Singapore. There is nothing wrong with capitalism in and of itself, but there are better and worse ways of conducting it. China, US, and Russia all suffer from crony capitalism (meaning your economic status at birth matters far more than any hard work you put in), which is what happens when all aspects of socialism are completely removed from society.

Yeah, these libertarian "solutions" are too simplistic and idealistic… You want maximum freedom and maximum responsibility…., and I don't think there is an easy answer to where "the middle ground" is... That is why I am conflicted about the Hong Kong protests... If all the different fractions in greater China turn against each other in a "democratic struggle," what horror ensues? And to all those conservatives who talk about "democratic freedom" for China at every turn: Yeah, are you sure THAT is why you support a democratic struggle in China and not a desire to "divide and conquer" a powerful competitor? Of course I also desire freedom and self determination for Chinese people as much as I do for say poor people in the west, or even vaccination deniers... Sigh…. these things are just soo difficult!

Too bad this doesn't actually work. The companies that sell out American freedom for Chinese money will NEVER "take personal responsibility". They will continue doing it until it hurts their profits more than it helps, and that will only happen if they're no longer allowed to operate in the West. And don't try to talk about consumer boycotts or similar bs, those almost never lead anywhere and when they do it's because they forced the government to react. The average consumer doesn't care enough to avoid buying something they want, as could be seen when Blizzard banned Blitzchung and suffered no consequences, and continued to bend over for China as before

One could argue that, but one would be kind of wrong lol They're trying to appeal to Chinese audiences because the Chinese government only allows a certain number of foreign films to headline in theaters at a time. It's not like when the US military makes deals with studios to portray the American military as really great and cool. It's more like "we should throw in a thing that will make this target audience like it more because otherwise we're wasting so much money trying to make this successful in China" Your movie can be popular in China without being a headliner in their movie theaters. It can just be a dvd or be on a streaming site. It has very little to do with censorship in this case.

This was a great explanation, much appreciated on the effort and clarity. Just a couple things I wanted to clarify as well. Anti-vaccination isn't "people being dumb" (not everyone's reasons are the same), when private vaccine courts have given out over 4 billion dollars in vaccine damages - this is only the amount known to the public - this is a private court made to prevent class-action lawsuits against corporations; at a minimum, this should be brought into question on a mainstream scale, yet no one seems to care except for those who are injured. Also, the CDC was caught falsifying their study data and related algorithms to produce MUCH lower injury percentages. Though anecdotal, 2 of my family members had their 2/3year olds vaccinated, different sides of the family and both of them lost normal functionality in 24 hours, they are now about 20 years old and never returned to normal brain function. Now, eating tons of meat and dying early or getting "diabetes" isn't simply "my right to hurt myself" anymore. In 2019 we collectively understand that it's destroying the planet, more than cars/planes/factories combined; as irrefutably or inconclusively stated by the world's best scientists and repeated by activists alike. In other words, this has become and always has been an infringement on people's freedoms. Even the government-subsidized meat/dairy etc. to make it appear cheaper when it's costing us billions. --- It goes without saying that destroying the planet is NOT your right to do so, much like dumping toxic chemicals into a river or forcing chemicals into another person's body when there are legitimate concerns.

People confuse freedom with lack of responsibility, you have a responsibility to provide for yourself and your family by working a good job that pays the bills whether or not you enjoy it. You also have a responsibility to be a part of your community and the world outside of your home. If you take away all of that you take away the essence of what it is to be free, you get to choose all of those things. You get to choose where you live, how you live, and why you live so long as you put in the elbow grease. It's inherently lazy to say you're not free just because you have a job, especially when America is the single freest country on Earth.

I'm a dental surgeon and I can tell you preventing others from entering the field (a protectionist move) by having an 8-11 year education, Board testing, and licensing requirement is not merely to prevent others from getting into the field. It's done so your dentist is not a mere carpenter and understands the human body/biology! And if there's no need for regulation/testing/licensing then it should apply to everyone; not just requiring some dentists to go through 8-11 years of education and others to just pick up a tool from Home Depot and start drilling. That's a fairness and equal grounds argument. You can't have it both ways. There's either licensing/education requirement to achieve quality of care standards for everyone or there should be no such thing for no one. And if you agree there should be no training/qualification process for dental surgeons then we can have a conversation about how willing you would be to visit the dentist in such society!

Most businesses are over-regulated though. Some places even require bar-tending licenses. I tell you as a former bar-tender and owner, anybody who's able to socialize and crack jokes can tend a bar as long as they can be bothered to do basic research. I've since moved to Norway doing carpentry, and immediately noticed draconian building laws here requiring any building erected to be of a certain size, making it near impossible for modern young people to build their own humble homes and getting a foot into that market. By the way I also made my friend cut off excess meat around my wisdom tooth that was causing pain and swelling. He didn't need 11 years of schooling for that and it didn't cost me a dime. Not to diminish your profession, I think it's a noble and very necessary one that I'll be relying on more as I get older. I just don't like stepping into a doctors office unless absolutely necessary :V

Jared's whole analogy about diabetes is actually much more relevant in countries like the UK where we have taxpayer funded healthcare. Currently 1% of NHS' ENTIRE biggest is spent on treating diabetes and it's complications. There's an argument to be made that people who significantly increase their own chance of developing diabetes and other illnesses are a strain on resources, and other taxpayers shouldn't have to pay for their treatment. - I'm not saying I agree with this argument, just that it's something worth having a debate about.

... well, I was more so thinking taxes in general being pushed by those that benefit the most from increased taxes. But yes, that's how it works with insurance rates too. You pay more to fund the weaker links that take more than they put in. It applies to people on foodstamps too, you pay more taxes to feed a larger family that is low income. Even though having those 8 extra kids was their choice, the government will still raise taxes to pay for it. The candidate that even offer to give that large family the most money is going to get that families' vote. Those kids will then grow up, repeat the process, and 8+ more families (with massive amounts of kids) will vote for higher taxes. Each time, those that want less taxes become more and more of a minority. This is why you may hear some people say that democracy is tyranny of the masses.

'Free market' is an oxymoron entirely because it's state intervention at the end of the day that can stop huge monopolies and actually guarantee other businesses at least somewhat of a chance. Therefore, in a way, free-market libertarianism is practically closer to corporatism with no rules, than a utopia of quality and luxury. You take power from the government, which is at least in some small way publicly accountable, to large corporations which are basically mini dictatorships. Plus, if you're talking about rights and consumer protections, profits decide what's worth actually improving.
