I never understood why big corporations would ask average, normal people to donate their money. If places like Whole Foods wants to make a difference in the world, they can donate some the money they make through exorbitant prices.

see the ford vs dodge court case. summary: ford reduced work hours to 40 hours a week from 80, and paid employees well above market rate, what he called a “living wage”. (this is usually just ignored because ford was a big anti-semite and we want political analysis to be simple with one dimensional white hats and black hats and not complex humans). regardless, two of his shareholders sued him, saying that he shouldn’t be paying employees more than market rate, those profits should go to shareholders instead, the court sided with the share holders, and he had to lower prices. Then these two started the dodge motor company and used their higher wages (lower than what ford was offering initially) and used that to snipe employees away from ford so that they didn’t have to do any employee training. TL;DR: it’s literally illegal for corporations to put anything above maximizing shareholder profits, if it reduces shareholder profits they can’t do it. for those wondering; the CEO loophole is that CEOs make very little on paper, and get their money instead through stock dividends, so their interests align with that of the shareholders. this idea is called “neoliberalism” and is why wages stopped going up with productivity in 1971. (This was nixon, not reagan that was in the 1980s)
