Desalination is actually pretty green if done right. You're probably thinking of the distillation process of desalination where you boil water and condensate the pure steam, however reverse osmosis is quite low energy. We can also extract high value minerals like lithium, cobalt, nickel, etc from the brine waste and use the salt. We wouldn't be draining the ocean either, we have a water cycle which would eventually return the water to the ocean. But even if some is captured into the local water table, our sea levels are rising and that small loss underground would capture it. Though since we have many wells and many water tables are getting depleted, I'd wager all that captured water would make it back into the atmosphere and into the ocean. Desalination is really our best and greenest bet for water rather than waiting for aquifers, reservoirs, and glacial runoff to be used up until we can't functionally use them year to year.
@loko80452 жыл бұрын
What happens with the brine and waste afterwards?
@Jaker7882 жыл бұрын
@@loko8045 It can be put back into the ocean or processed into salt. You can even extract trace minerals like Lithium, Cobalt, Nickel, etc. There's actually quite a bit of lithium in the ocean, it's just not practical in the dilute quantities to process sea water for that alone, but as a side benefit it would put a dent in demand. There is a problem with dumping it back in the sea however, often it's dumped close to shore and on reef systems and shallow water ecosystems, the shock is damaging before it has time to dissolve and dissapate. To be acceptable it needs to be put on a boat and dumped in deep water rather than a waste pipeline dropping salty slurry right off the shore.

One guy hops my fence and weed eats along my side of the fence so it looks the same as his side. They also reported me in 2020 (yes, THAT year) to the township for it being too tall, even though I’d been out there cutting it back in sections. I’d been a little distracted at the time and had switched to night shifts, so, yes, my grass was tall. But no one ever knocked on my door. They just reported me. Again, in 2020. Another time, a neighbor just rode his mower into my fenced in backyard and started mowing a section he thought was too tall. I’d been letting that area dry out a couple of days because it’s swampy. It was ankle high. Again, no knock on the door. No conversation where I could have said, “Yeah, I mowed the rest yesterday but I’m saving that corner til Wednesday so it can dry out a bit.” One of the guys mows daily. Even in the rain. I half expected to see him out there when Helene blew through Friday. 😂

I want you to look at the laws that are in place now and ask if officials apply them fairly. I understand your argument that the government has to stop people from actions that ruin something for everyone. In a perfect world, sure. But in THIS world, every time you make a law, you create criminals. The water usage law would never in a million years be enforced fairly. Certain groups would lose their homes, pay outrageous fines (that go back to politicians), or even end up in prison. Others with connections will get away with individually watering each blade of grass on their lawn. I’m sorry to say this, but with 8 billion people, there ISN’T a way to reverse things (unless people changed as a whole, and I can’t see that happening). Eventually, there will be an event that decreases the population, because that’s what isn’t sustainable. By the way, the term you were trying to think of is “imminent domain.” The government can seize your land if they “need” it. Check out some cases of when that was applied and then decide if you still think trusting the government to regulate water usage is a good idea.
