What I took away is that Liane is indulging Eric's behavior because she is loney and is in need of companionship whether that's just a good friend or romantic partner, deep down she knows that she is capable of controlling and raising Eric properly but she chooses to "baby" and indulge him so that he will grow an unhealthy attachment to her and never leave her. She doesn't see Eric as her "child" but rather her only source of company... and as Ceasar said you cannot treat your young child as a friend, all children need an authority figure who's going to teach and guide them into becoming decent human beings, once they grow up and are able to stand shoulder to shoulder with you (figuratively speaking) then you can become their friend...

This episode is actually a great summary of how parents should raise their children; set clear borders, be strict and teach them that bad behaviour results in punishment, but also make them feel valuable and appreciated.
