I explore the south Staffordshire railway walk to the fens pools in pensnett covering history and more looking at old photo maps
As the name suggests South Staffordshire Railway Walk was originally part of the Wombourne Branch Line built between 1912 and 1925 by the Great Western Railway Company. However it was not very successful and passenger services were withdrawn in 1932. In the aftermath of the D-Day landings in Normandy during The Second World War it was used to transport wounded allied soldiers to various hospitals in the area. It became part of the Western Region of British Railways in 1948 after the nationalisation of the railways.
The line was finally closed in 1965 under the Beeching Report after decline in traffic throughout the 1950s and early 1960s, with the last train running on 24 June 1965.

I walked and cycled this route about 12 years ago starting from Wolverhampton, found by chance off of the canal west-bound, spotted a large Warren pattern girder bridge and WOW , followed the route as far as where it crosses over the A449 near the scrapyards. I noticed many of the plate girder bridges along the route are in extremely well kept condition, many of them having brick infill Jack arches underside between the H girders, the engineers blue brick jack arches looked like they'd had a coat of varnish applied as preservative, and the outer plate girders look like they'd had a fresh coat of yellow + brown paint.

I'll have to walk the full length bud from the fens to Tettenhall interesting place with all the old bridges shame there's no railway track left but to see the bridges amazing to see. 😁😁
