The first time I ever went to South Station, I was a teenager during the early 1970s, and it had not yet begun to be renovated. It was crumbling and extremely grimy, and was infested with pigeons (as the doors leading to the train platforms stopped working, they were simply removed, leaving the interior of the station directly exposed to the elements, and allowing entry for hundreds of pigeons. It was not a nice place. The work to make South Station over began, I believe, during the late 1970s, and into the early '80s. The Greyhound terminal originally was located on St. James Ave., in space now occupied by the building known as 319 Stuart, while the Trailways Terminal was in Park Square, roughly where the Transportation Building now sits. When Trailways was torn down somewhere around 1980 to make way for the Transportation Building, they relocated to a very sleek, smallish glass and steel structure in Dewey Square (right where the Rose Kennedy Greenway now begins), where they would remain until the South Station bus terminal was completed during the late 1990s. The Dewey Square terminal was a very tight fit, as there was just barely enough room for the buses to pull in and turn around, but it served it purpose for the time it was there.
