Following its independence in 2011, South Sudan suffered from a bloody civil war. After a peace accord five years ago calmed the situation, Rebecca Nyandeng de Mabior decided to return home from exile along with her two daughters.
She’s the widow of the former rebel leader John Garang de Mabior, a man who spent years of his life fighting for South Sudan’s independence from the Republic of Sudan. On the heels of a 2005 peace agreement, Garang served as Vice President of Sudan for just a few weeks, before his death in a helicopter crash. In 2011, his dream of an independent South Sudan became a reality. But in the years that followed, former independence fighters like the current South Sudanese President Salva Kiir Mayardit began wrestling for power in South Sudan. Hundreds of thousands of people died.
Rebecca Nyandeng now intends to campaign for unity among her people. Nothing unsettles the widow more than the thought that her husband’s battle and that of millions of other South Sudanese could be in vain. These feelings motivated her to return to her homeland after many years in Kenyan exile and get involved in politics. It is her greatest hope that her children will also begin new lives in South Sudan. Rebecca Nyandeng’s daughter Akuol, the director of the documentary, was born and raised in exile. Her South Sudanese identity is bound up with many questions and fears. She accompanies her mother and sister Nyankuir with the camera as a way of facing up to these fears. "No Simple Way Home” is a trans-generational dialog on the dual challenges of family life and political engagement.

In 1994 I was working with a German NGO in Nyamlel on the river banks of Bar el Ghazal. The Dinka people gave me a local name, they named me Matuang dit. I'll never forget this experience with a bunch of good people. Watching videos in youtube about the development in politics in southern Sudan, makes we angry and very sad, nothing realy changed for the common people, suffering goes on and the big male Politicians are filling their pockets. It would be completely different, if this women would have become president, women in Africa are careing more for their people. Wonderful touching Documentary, done by wonderfull people, I wish for your People and Southern Sudan Peace and Unity.

Thanks, DW, for this great documentary, and thank you to all those who have expressed their feelings of sympathy about South Sudan and its people. Our dreams as people of South Sudan have been hijacked by our politicians. On the other hand, our hopes remain intact. South Sudan will rise with time. Whether during our time or when we are dead. South Sudan is a country with a lot of potential. The next generations will restore the dreams of all South Sudanese and the vision of the late Dr. Garang❤

Such a beautifully done documentary. It showcases not only the determination of a budding young nation but also foot step progression where a woman has now been elected a Vice president. Woman are naturers by nature and eventually I believe with her input, if given room and continued empowerment, change will definable come and South Sudan will rise up. “What is the point of freedom if people are still suffering? Freedom must come with advantages” - From a Kenyan brother.

Love from your neighbor, Uganda. Most of these endless civil, religious, and political wars are intentionally funded by the same people who benefit from them financially and politically both local and global allies. It has become a norm for countries to be frequently under some sort of instability. May peace thrive in our nations.

I have to say, these documentaries from DW are great. My only criticism, though, is just how laced they are with ads... I get they need to make money but I think there were about 10 different ad breaks - no exaggeration. It detracts from the immersion and also makes it seem a bit cheap trying to capitalise so much from documentaries often based on documenting often impoverished people and nations.
