DARFUR, Sudan - The jagged peaks of the Jebel Marra mountains rise suddenly out of an endless stretch of desert in western Sudan’s Darfur region. Rebel soldiers, many of whom came here to fight against the government nearly 20 years ago, man their posts.
Today civilians here live in relative safety after decades of war, but these mountaintop villages are completely cut off from the rest of Sudanese society. To many, trauma from decades of bombs dropped on them by their own government is compounded by their total isolation.
A team from VICE News are the first outside journalists to access the last rebel stronghold in Jebel Marra in five years. What we found is an area still completely cut off from Sudan and still functionally at war. Nearly a year after a historic revolution toppled President Omar al-Bashir, some in Jebel Marra haven’t even heard he is no longer in power.

Yea, peace and stability are necessary. You can't build a factory, a road, infrastructure projects, etc. if you're busy fighting a war, it takes money and resources and on top of that it's dangerous because it could be attacked or a road for example could be taken over by rebels.

Luqman K You’d be surprised how ignorant people are and don’t realize how corrupt the outside world is. I live in the US, and mostly everyone is very uneducated about history, it’s atrocities, and their own government! Even in my college, I’ve talked to immigrants/transfer students who don’t know much about their own country or region. It’s very sad to see I’m more educated than the natives who live in their own country. Many individuals only become this ignorant because they’d rather use escapism than enlighten themselves about the world.

I C Yea, it’s also all the propaganda that produces a “numbing” mind towards reality. That’s why I’ve self-educated myself in history, theology, geography, anthropology, philosophy, etc. Someday soon, I would love to share my knowledge and talk of the many misconceptions about history, that keeps doing damage to our society.

@@luqmanHG I know you might find that surprising, but unfortunately it is true. I only came to realise the truth of the situation when I went to the UK and met one of the refugees there. What he told me was just mind blowing. I would have never thought the government I was seeing would be capable of doing such horrible things to innocent people. I could feel his anger at the injustice his people suffered and that they were betrayed by the rest of the people. In Sudan I am perceived as an "Arab" as I am relatively light skinned, so when I first met him he was somewhat reserved, however as time went on we became the best of friends and to this day we still are.

As a Sudanese, I would like to thank you very much for this documentary. It really tells the story from the perspective of the people of Darfur who have suffered for decades. Most of our TV channels did not and will not narrate such a documentary, because it supports the former Omar al-Bashir party (the National Conference), or as we call them "Kizan". I am really grateful for this. It means a lot.

I was born in Nyala, Darfur and this is heartbreaking. After settling in Australia escaping war, i returned in 2015 to find the desolate remains my people and their land. Sudan's 2019 revolution brought some hope of change however I am doubtful it will extend to the people of Darfur - one of the true natives of the lands. We are disappearing as we speak and so is my identity.....

Thank you for this insight. It surely raised my interest in the conflict, and it is my belief that we have to raise consciousness globally about what happens in Darfur. As Professor Hans Rosling said: we, as human beings, are very bad at recognizing slow trends and slow developing events. Which is why long-lasting conflicts like this tend to be missed and left out.

I remember when the war began in Darfur, and I was 12 years old, and there are still memories of war going on in my mind at night when I remember of people being burned alive and women and young children infected, frankly, the situation will not be tolerated by anyone, and unfortunately the people you met in the city of El Fasher are militias because they are his government Omar Hassan Al-Bashir for committing war crimes against the civilian indigenous population, meaning in general, crimes against humanity.

Vice really takes a deep dive and the stories they come up with are those mostly shunned or ignored by mainstream media...but it now feels vice takes an unsettling amount of initiative to portray stories a particular way, which may be based on narratives of racism and religion. This video is profound and shows the cost of war on the people of a community. It is difficult for me to accept all their findings on face value, but deeper concepts behind this crisis are much clearer now.

While this is an excellent piece of journalism, you shouldn't dis on journalism as a whole with comments like this. The majority actually have good intention. Many are doing great with passion and integrity. Only a few are manipulating others for their own profits. It's easy actually. Just follow the money to see the truth.
