Thank you for sharing your footage of the show. I was most impressed with Burntisland's combination of ships and railway. Very well built indeed.

Hi Tim. Wonderful, and some of the best video I've seen on KZbin so far of my layout Much Murkle. It has also given me the opportunity to see the other layouts in more detail than I could do during the weekend of the show. Thank you so much for making the effort to take and produce such high quality videos of the shows you visit. Thanks again, Nick Wood

Hi Nick, "Much Murkle" really captures the atmosphere of a small GWR country terminus on a sunny day. You must be very proud of it. It is modeled to an exceptionally high standard with a wealth of detail, such as the muddy area around the cattle trough, placing the large trees towards the front is very effective giving a real three dimensional effect as the viewer has to look between the trees to see the train. The Southampton Exhibition was very good, with plenty of layouts and stalls to suit modelers of all ages and abilities. I'm glad you enjoyed the video and I'll say "Hi" next time I see "Much Murkle" at an exhibition.

Hi Tim. Some terrific layouts, but I was taken by the range of scenery, including what looked like a hand painted background from Brixham. Always amazed at the range of skills of these modellers. Thanks for making such a great video. Alan.

Hi Mark, it was a good exhibition, I really enjoyed my visit, plenty to see and do, Tittesworth was a particularly nice layout, I love narrow gauge. I picked up a few ideas for my own layout, started about 35 years ago and still not quite finished. Are you a member of the Southampton Model Railway Society?

Hi, it's good to meet up with like minded people to share and enjoy the hobby via a club or organisation such as the Southampton Model Railway Society. I've added a couple of links showing my own model railway, it has given me many hours of pleasure over a lot years. Hello, Tim! I love sincere enthusiastic people engaged in technical creativity. Here are my impressions after watching this Railway exhibition. Details of these landscapes around the model of this railway were pleasantly surprised me. Some of them are literally photorealistic, including good perspective in the distance and even use of the model of moving car, as seen at 18th minute and further. So, that Hollywood 'nervously smokes on the sidelines'! ;))) /Ha-ha-ha./ IMHO, only thing there is superfluous, in my opinion, considerable number of static figurines of people and even domestic animals -- after all, it is impossible to 'animate' all of them, is not it?.. Thus, all of these parts of the railway landscape somewhat destroy wonderful world of this small railway. How inappropriate and "heavenly panorama" with fixed painted planes! /At 32:55+/ But imitation of fire and smoke in the building, on contrary, is very good idea and it's appropriate. Also appropriate is a 'dummy' in driver's cab of locomotive: its immobility is not conspicuous and partly even justified by the place. In my opinion, it would also be appropriate to place several 'stationary' figures of passengers on benches at the railway station... And that's all. But the main thing is of course in another. Such beautifully executed models keep us the world of good old railways, already sunk into oblivion... Music for the film is very suitable also. Thanks and good luck! P.S. One question: what do mean these designations: '4mm scale' or '7mm scale'? It's not measure in millimeters, is not it?

Hi Chuck, building my own layout helps me appreciate the effort that goes into building these exhibition models. I loved the way water was represented by "Burntisland" and depth is achieved by "Wickwar" including realistic moving road vehicles. Two smaller dioramas were notable for amazing detail "Woods Wharf" and "Calstock's Halton Quay". Two larger models "Wellbridge" and "Llanfair Caereinion" include excellent non-railway detail that made them appear even more life-like. "Burntisland" created a totally convincing port scene set in 1883. The placing of people, cars and buildings on a layout can really add to the scene or occasionally look out of place. The organizers and exhibitors did a really good job. It was a most agreeable way to spent an otherwise cold and damp day. These links gives a good explanation of scales such as '4mm scale' or '7mm scale' - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/4_mm_scale en.wikipedia.org/wiki/7_mm_scale

Of course, a modeler masters are big workers. But they are also very creative people, -- in most cases, at least. Once again I will say -- perhaps it's even a banality -- that people who are genuinely passionate about modeling are probably happiest people on this Earth. It's very good when works area including their creativity is limited only by Mother Nature -- ha-ha-ha, 'I cannot jump above head': because gravity does not allow it, -- but not limited him at known social and many other 'brakes' for... Yes, and I myself -- while I was be in childhood and adolescence years -- was an avid modeler builder. And I've done a lot of things... /Although later from mechanical and electromechanical devices I went to designing an electronic devices: such is very good, that my father -- for long time deceased -- was passionate radio amateur; and thanks to him I was taught 'to soldering iron' from age when I was still walking on foot under table (ha-ha-ha)!/ So, I want to say now that in the best manifestations of technical creativity, -- especially at good old days, -- were created the human characters of the world's best engineers, weren't they? By the way, my great-grandfather was a railway engineer at late 19th century. So addiction to the railways too I have, it seems, 'in my blood'... ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡° ) Thank you and good luke! P.S. Thanks and for links too, dear Tim! /I didn't know that it meant simply 4(7) mm to one ft as measure, or scales 1:76.2 and 1:43.5. Because it's strange measure: aka mixture of metric and traditional English measures.../

I've probably mention before, I am a precision engineer with a fully equipped workshop including cylindrical and surface grinders, mills, a lathe, 3D and 2D CNC milling machines and a spark erosion machine. I design components and plastic injection mold tools on 3D CAD. Usually I work for other people, but for the next 4 months I am making mold tools for a product I have developed, exciting times, my product might be successful, it might fail, but I have to do it, because if I don't, I will spend the rest of life wondering what might have happened. I am fortunate in that I can finance myself. Your family members have clearly had a big influence on your life, helping you to become interested in engineering and electronics at a young age, not everyone can claim that their great-grandfather was a railway engineer. Most of my friends in engineering also do various forms of modelling or restoration in their spare time, whether it be model railways, model soldiers or restoring a full size traction engine or even a locomotive. Creative people are never bored, they are always working on something, painting, modeling, writing a book, film-making, acting are all great ways to spend time. Many times people have said "I wish I had a hobby like you". You mentioned the Scales such as 4mm and how you found it strange that it was a combination of metric and traditional English measures. When I started my apprenticeship I was told to provide both English and Metric measuring equipment, that was over forty ago and I still use both today because the USA still uses English measurements. I don't know when my interest in railways started, but I suspect it was in my genes.
@chucksandos89396 жыл бұрын
Very well, dear Tim! Yes, indeed, it's creative approach to work that does not make us bored and indulge in various meaningless amusements in our lives. On contrary, there is not enough time to learn new things and creative applicate it of knowledge to work, -- alas!.. :))) As for these measures -- metric and traditional English measures, -- I did not mean strangeness of use somewhere there or here specifically. But it's strange for me to do mixing in one system: to designate scale of modelism deals. Earlier, I just did not seems involved with such mixed measure. But separately, -- for example, inches or centimeters, -- it are used in technology everywhere very often. Good luck!

Without people who are curious and creative, many of the things we enjoy today would not exist. Wonderful toys such as Lego and Meccano help nurture creativity whilst a day spent killing aliens on a computer game achieves nothing. Many young people don't have part time jobs and computer games kill their creativity. They are not gaining the life skills required to compete in an increasingly competitive world. I hope I am wrong.

Hello Tim, is this the most important model railway exhibition in the UK? The large number of different layouts as well as the many manufacturers and added stalls of any kind point to it. - Heinz

Model railway exhibitions are popular all over the country, the size and quality usually reflects the size of the town or city hosting the event. This was a very good exhibition, similar in size and quality to exhibitions put on by most similar sized British towns and cities. We are really lucky in the UK to be so spoiled for choice. The top venues are London and Birmingham ... click on this link to get an idea of the choice available - www.world-of-railways.co.uk/brm/events

Soon you will be able to catch a train direct from cities in Germany to London, maybe you will come to visit the London Exhibition? - www.easyvoyage.co.uk/travel-headlines/eurostar-new-services-to-germany-from-uk-60293

Hello Tim, don't noted Eurostar's announcement. trainline.de offers cheaper tickets than DB but there is no direct train e.g. Munich to London. Price depends by travel time and route Straßbourg-Paris or Cologne-Bruxelles and kind of trains. Eurostar itself offers tickets of its lines only.

Hi, Eurostar have been promising more direct trains to Europe from London including Frankfurt for a long time, but it appears it hasn't happened yet. I'm sorry to hear you have problems with your knees, I fully understand your reluctance to travel, even by train.
