Improving the national team and their success on the international stages could get them more talented players, and it can increase interest and support from fans leading to higher ticket and merchandise sales or even more broadcast licensing deals, more sponsorships as well as inspiring grassroots development, more youth participation etc. Still it takes a lot of money and time but not a bad investment, both the international teams and clubs could get tons of benefits from improvements in football. If they only focus on money, the current situations just don't make sense since the govt is more than capable of funding. China is not a 3rd world country. Dutch coach Guus Hiddink became coach of the South Korean national team for the 2002 World Cup. Hiddink was culturally shocked when he started in South Korea. For example, (older) South Korean players with the most played games were always called up. Even though they played poorly, they had to be called up. Hiddink changed this because he believed that the best players should be drafted young or old. Hiddink was widely criticized for disrespecting the South Korean hierarchy. High-ranking officials from the South Korean Football Association also got involved with the team. But Hiddink said he decides who will play and how. Ultimately, Guus Hiddink finished 4th at the 2002 World Cup. Thanks to Hiddink, South Korean football became very professionalized and many South Korean players left for European football competitions.

Thierry Henry did say that football requires more (creative) brains than brawn. This is not a diss, but mainland Chinese are mainly innovators meaning they take X and make it faster, bigger and bolder. But football requires players who can create X, Y and Z and not just 1 but at minimum 23 or 25 of them for a full squad. You can be faster, stronger, and have prodigious stamina but if you can't create chances, your team is not going anywhere.

Essentially the Chinese government, like Saudi Arabia, can't buy passion, a culture and creativity. With many other sports, especially when competed in pairs and individually, you can approach them in a way that with enough training, you can beat the best opponents. It's about strength, precision, synchronization. Football isn't like that. Its an art form, where people of all shapes and sizes find a position. You don't have to be perfect, or strong, or sometimes even skillful. You find your place within the team and the tactics can suit you. So much of football isn't even the game itself, it's the mentality behind it. So called 'sh-thousery'. Jose Mourinho shows how important it is and it;'s why you have upsets in football. The small sides can beat the big teams when on their own home turf, with their own crowd behind, and with a passion and drive which pushes the bigger teams to a shock result. China has never had a culture that embraces football. It embraces a team culture where everyone is the same. Everyone pulls their weight. Individuality takes a side seat. That's useful to an extent, but if you don't have a culture where players have learnt creative expression or how to take risk individually, how can they make those magical moments in a match that so often win games and inspire a generation to play? The clip of all of the kids moving in sync with the footballs in their hands made me laugh. It highlights the absurdity around the mentality around football there. Other comments have said it better than I have, but first, you need to build a culture around football that's genuine. You can't see it as an academic pursuit like they do with other extracurricular clubs. It's not like piano lessons. When you have that, you'll have talent rise up and fulfil China's wants. If you keep viewing football through a 'how will this benefit my child's studies or position in society' view, you'll continue to have rising stars fails in their teen years and continue to have clubs which are focused on looking successful, rather than building a base for future success.

Based on my understanding, you can find about one gifted football player in 200,000 players. China has a large population, but a tiny population of football players. In China, the player's pool is too small to draw gifted players, let alone develop gifted players into football talents or even football legends. In other countries, kids, teenagers and adults play football for fun or being active, no one aims to be a professional player to start with. In China, parents send kids to play football for a possibility of professional career but not for fun or being active. If your chance is only 1/200,000 to be successful, it makes perfect sense that Chinese parents don't want their kids to play football to start with.

In my opinion, there's two segments of the football world. The nations with older, established football associations (typically the European and South American powers), and nations with a less established one (typically nations within AFC, CAF, CONCACAF,). For all nations, a key factor in player development is the global movement of coaches and players but this is especially true for less established nations. Even though this isn't a perfect rating system, let's review the FIFA Men's Rankings and look at successful nations from AFC, CAF, CONCACAF. AFC (Asia): Japan, Iran, South Korea and Australia are full of players who play abroad and many of these nations have technical coaches who either developed outside their home nation or are foreign coaches. CAF (Africa): The same is true in Africa. Morocco's deep World Cup run in 2022 was spurred on by players like Achraf Hakimi and Hakim Ziyech, who both play in UEFA nations. African nations have seen tremendous growth in football from the exchange of talent and coaches, many African nations like Morocco, Senegal, Nigeria, and Côte d'Ivoire are led by players who play in Europe. CONCACAF: The United States, Canada, Panama and Costa Rica have seen increased prominence from a player development standpoint from sending younger players outside their home countries. Mexico's recent decline is partly attributed to a lack of international crossover. Academic rigor does not explain China's inability to field a competitive men's football program for multiple reasons. 1. There are other nations within AFC who also share academic challenges and schooling difficulties. Japan and South Korea are clear examples of tough schooling and a capable senior men's side. 2. China's individual athletes thrive in sports. The academic workload of a footballer and a gymnast are the same, and the gymnast probably has a more grueling athletic schedule than the footballer. 3. China fields a capable Women's football program. Currently ranked 19th in the World (lowest in program history), China has qualified for the last 3 Women's World Cups and was a runner up in 1999, and won the AFC Asian Women's Cup in 2022.

Why does a nation have to try to win at every sport? China has olympic gold medalists in many diverse sports, ranging from strength (weight lifting) to grace (gymnastics and diving), and many other things besides. As a Swedish person, the olympic table tennis players of China are especially impressive. Our Swedish table tennis players have had so many fantastic battles with the Chinese players -- it's wonderful to watch these competitions and see how both nations have excelled at this sport. I think nations should focus more on the sports that that have a very strong tradition in their culture and showcase their skill and excellence in those sports, and enjoy the successes in those.

No one cares about Olympics. Soccer gives you the most clout and everything else is like less than 1% of the world's population knows about it. Soccer is #1 for country's pride and probably baseball since NFL/NBA aren't global enough but baseball is big in US, Centrral and South America, East Asia and some western European countries. Not a long time ago, we Finns not only couldn't beat our neighbours like Sweden, Norway and Estonia, but we even lost to countries such as Montenegro and San Marino, and to date, Finland is still the only country to lose to Morocco in the contest. It was just recently that Finland has become a Eurovision powerhouse, producing successful names such as Blind Channel and Käärijä, which almost won Sweden last year. Even Finnish Eurovision has risen from rock bottom, why can't Chinese football and soft power improve? Chinese football, you really need to catch up!
