No jobs, no school: Afghan refugees in Pakistan see only a dark future

Khajida Hazara fled Afghanistan in August 2021 after the Taliban drove out government forces and took over the country. Fearing the group would reimpose its harsh interpretation of sharia law as it had in the 1990s, Hazara fled to neighbouring Pakistan, where she now lives as an unregistered refugee. Although safe from the Taliban, she says her future is far from secure. Pakistan does not give Afghan refugees opportunities for education or employment. Some Afghan families who have been living in Pakistan for decades still have no path to citizenship, including entire generations without livelihood prospects or the chance to leave the camps to improve their lives.

There's an Afghan I know who was a taxi driver in Kabul few years back. Today the guy owns a plaza on a busy street of a European capital. Don't ask how, but he just does. There are thousands of similar stories of how Kabulis made millions and are now settled in West or ME. Recently I reached out to some Afghans in the West to ask them to help some other Afghans (most of them ex forces or intelligence) who are stuck in Afghanistan. Every single one of the West-based Afghans flatly refused, even though these Afghans are quite rich. So the point is, stop asking others for help or empathy. If your countrymen who have made millions over the last decade are not willing to help you, then there's a deeper rot at play here. There's only so much non-Afghans can do.

USA currently owes Pakistan more than 20 Billion dollars to Pakistan under CSF funds. Pakistan in the 90s had paid to buy F-16s from US but instead of delivering the jets, USA cancelled the agreement and instead demanded Pakistan to pay for its Parking fees in USA, it partially compensated by sending expired soy beans. The direct Military aid that Pakistan got from USA was for helping the Pak army for its counter terrorism ops in FATA and other regions. USA has kept a track of the aid and audited but misrepresents facts to its public. The American aid the Pak Military got was also used in the reconquest of Swat and Fata. Mind I tell you that Swat and other regions of KPK were captured by Pakistani Taliban and Pakistani Military to date is the only military in the world to start a war on terror. Mind I also tell you that some of the money Pak received was for the bounties on some its citizens, most of civilians sent to Guantanamo were wronged including Dr Afia Siddiqui. and also USA intentionally killed more than 30 Pak soldiers in an Air strike but our corrupt leadership loved American dollars so they didnt make much noise and accepted the money in form of aid. The aid given to Pakistan by USA was never for Afghans except in the war against communism where USA gave money to Pak to redistribute to the Mujahedeen. Pak gave that aid to every Afghan resistance group. The USA also supplied large caches of ammunition for the soviet war but after the soviet withdrawal, it conspired to destroy the ammunitions supplied in the ojhri camp disaster. Also Pak has done tremendous effort to help afghans with their hardly by investing in education for afghans, health, trade and other sectors.

It's not true. In pak schools many Afghan children are studying they have different ID cards and it's totally allowed but if you've illegally entered in pak and don't have card then it's your fault and at Govt level education is free here my many students are Afghan even in college and Afghan haven't gone back to their country even in American rule bcoz they ve better opportunities in pak ya but some ppl don't want to work and just want sympathy and some money. These refugees are a burden on pak economy but still pak is not throwing them back to Afghanistan I guess they have problems every where in American-afghanistan, in Taliban- Afghan and in pak too. Same here since childhood whether it was school, college or university I've had dozens of Afghan classmates in Peshawar (my city) there's dozens of Afghan nationals businesses in my street alone there are 4afghan nationals houses who are legal refugees. The problem isn't that we don't provide basic rights the problem is that she came illegally and is trying to hide from the authorities like they said in the video too. Now ofcourse you can't expect to live in a place while on the run.

@@macemaker123 Afghanistan government before Taliban was undeniably corrupt. The US and allied international aid, funds from the US and more went to the pockets of corrupt officials. It's exactly why it fell immediately, the people knew of their corruption. 20 years and they felt like nothing changed. Well, truthfully speaking some things did change but that's only on a few stable regions like Jalalabad, Kandahar, Kabul, and etc. A majority remained as under conflict between US, its Allies, and Afghan forces against Taliban The latter comprises of Taliban occupied regions From this point on is personal opinion, This fault isn't international fault at this point, 20 years of aid, the government could not do what they're supposed to do and the people(locals) made no difference. Even now, the people just cling to what the Taliban and international aid can give. Now they hope that they get peace and be treated better but- the thing is, the Taliban was once a major enemy. How do you expect any country to just warmly welcome them? Almost none, one or two may have recognized them, nonetheless they won't reach out to them, the Taliban must be the first one to respond and reach out to them.

Personally I'd hate to say it but since our politicians were sure already that Talibans are going to dethrone the last government because of their uncanny strength and resolve, so they thought why not cheer for the winner. Either way, we as a country didn't have healthy relationship with the previous Afghan government either however the connection and affiliation we feel with our regular Afghan brothers is entirely something else..

NATO bears some responsibility but so too do the Afghani people themselves, the Taliban, Russia, Al Qaeda, Pakistan, Iran and various Gulf States. It’s impossible to apportion blame objectively. But the Taliban and it’s foreign backers are in the driver’s seat now.

Pakistan was already in economic disaster as a result of previous governments' bad policies, and the current government is barely avoiding it. It, like any other government in the world, would prioritise its inhabitants; if you accepted a warm welcome, you were delusional. More than 90% of the population already supports deporting the present refugee influx..If the scenario had been any different they would have showered you with love but in such uncertain times , you should be grateful that they are tolerating your presence.

You have no idea about how diverse actually Pakistan is, more Pashtoons live in Pakistan than in entire Afghanistan lol There are also sizeable communities of different ethnicities (like Hazaras, the girl is also from the Hazara ethnicity) people like you are surely confused about what is happening with the Afghan refugees in Pakistan the only reason is what happened to Pakistan in the past and we don't want it again... No ID for Afghan refugees means nothing for Afghan refugees, they are here for a limited time and they can't even go to a bigger city because of no ID. :) We have enough problems..

PU, GCU, NUST, LUMS, UCP, UL, KE MEDICAL COLLEGE, NISHTAR MEDICAL COLLEGE and dozens of other dominated universities of Pakistan and even the local ones have dozens of Afghan students studying in them. Every Afghan can have his or her own identity if they want to. If she thinks that Government is going to call her and then hand it over to get than she is wrong because even locals don't get such protocol.
