Initially conceived as a way for smokers to kick the habit, vaping has since undergone a remarkable evolution in Southeast Asia. It is now a thriving cultural phenomenon, with trendy vape cafes, massive trade shows, competitive tournaments, and a burgeoning online and offline community.
But amidst the glitz and glamour lies great controversy. Even as vaping continues to be promoted as the solution to the global tobacco crisis, public health experts warn that vaping could create a new health crisis of its own, especially with high levels of underage use.
Undercover Asia investigates: Why has vaping gained such popularity among youths? How effective is it as a smoking cessation aid? What aren’t vape companies telling us? And could vaping act as a gateway drug into even more dangerous substance abuse?

As a former smoker who quit after 10 years of smoking, i can never judge those who can't quit because i know it is a very hard addiction to get rid of, and it often is more psychological than physical addiction. The only thing that made me quit cold turkey was wanting to start a family.

I used vaping to get off cigarettes. Once I could see the amount of money I was saving, that proved a great incentive to stop inhaling altogether. I could see the cost of vapes increasing the more popular they became. Having been caught in one expensive addiction, I was not prepared to get on another. I've been stopped for over 3 years now. 😊

I was a heavy smoker for almost 35 years, and tried quitting many times. I was VERY skeptical about e-cigarettes when they first appeared, but studied impartial government and university studies as they emerged. Many years later I finally tried the switch to vaping after being satisfied with study results that while not HARMLESS, they are definitely less harmful, and I have been cigarette free for 3+ years now. While it may be anecdotal, I feel so much better now, I’m no longer short of breath, I sleep and eat better. I started at 12mg nic, now down to 3mg, and will stop totally eventually. I can absolutely say that without vapes I would still be smoking. All that said, it is something that needs to be regulated, as we’ve seen time and again how well prohibition works with any substance.

Just go one week. You'll be completely chemically free of nicotine. I found it took me about 3 months to stop having my psychological cravings. Had to change some morning and meal rituals. I replaced smoking with drinking puer tea. I found in the beginning I felt like I had a hole I couldn't fill. So I was eating more sweets. Slowly I realized what I was doing and after switching to tea I have absolutely no desire to smoke or vape. It's been almost two years now. I did find that I now look down on smokers and capers. I don't know what that's all about. Some kind of strange prejudice that I developed. Even after acknowledging it I still can't help but be grossed out by nicotine addicts. Particularly smokers. I can't explain it, but it's where I'm currently at. Anyway, I'm telling you. If you can suffer through just one week. Then just keep challenging yourself to go one more day. Eventually you'll be free. You'll also have way more money in your pocket at the end of the year.

I'm a high school student and almost half of the students in my department vapes. Some even proudly says they (can) vape. Even my own family members joined in to this addiction. It has become a trend here almost to the point some students bring their vapes to school. A classmate of mine was caught but they weren't even scolded fairly. I've always had an irk for vaping/smoking because my father passed away from it, he caught stage 4 cancer with it. He was 13 when he started smoking, and caught an illness in his early 50's. I don't judge anyone smoking or vaping, but for sake of all, please look after your mental and physical health at all times. Have a good day everyone.

I smoked from age 12 through my early 30s. Everyone in my father's family smoked and I was the youngest. Vaping helped me quit, and yes, I loved the flavors. I used to be a clove (kretek) smoker and a flavored tobacco smoker. But after vaping for a couple years, I could feel it was doing something to my lungs that I didn't like. So, during the pandemic, I quit vaping. I still miss the social aspects of it and doing tricks with my vape. I totally get it. But I love the way my lungs feel now and I think quitting all nicotine products was the right decision for my long-term health. I also like no longer having to budget for it!

As a student, I was very sad because my friends used to be non-smokers and never touched cigarettes. They become vape addicts and no matter how hard I tell them, it could be even more dangerous, especially since it's a new product. I am so grateful to have found this video and I will share it with them even though they will walk away and hate me even more because I am so old fashioned I don't hate smokers or vape I just don't want my loved ones to die in torment, I know this product can give peace of mind forgetting problems and stress, but it's only temporary and something instant sometimes we have to pay for. Again I'm not saying that I won't be tempted by the offer, especially since the ad is very promising. and yes i would rather save my money for other things like my childhood dream of traveling the world small town in indonesia, monday 7 august

anything 'could be' more dangerous, even well known things. Because we don't know everything. However, its very unlikely that vaping is more harmful than cigarettes given that we know quite a bit about what is dangerous about cigarettes, and most of it isn't in e-liquid. It's called harm reduction. If you have had no success quiting, and no confidence that you can, then nicotine replacements like e-cigarettes, patches, gum, etc are almost certainly way less harmful than smoking cigarettes. You can want all you want, but people who want to get away from cigarettes need a method that actually works. Even if it isn't 100% harmless.

I smoked for about 10 years and began vaping as an alternative to cigarettes. It helped, but I went back to cigarettes for about half a year because I lost my vape device and didn't want to spend money buying another. Then finally in the beginning of 2021 I quit cold turkey because of how out of shape I felt jogging around the block. Quitting is freaking hard because of the psychological misery of a craving. But if you can successfully bypass those cravings and force your brain to be okay with life without nicotine/cigarettes, you can definitely quit for the better and truly be a person that just doesn't smoke anymore.

I used to be very narrow minded. "Well they've started it, can't they just quit?" But this mindset changed when I talked to my closest cousin about why they smoked cigarettes and they told me it's because smoking makes you feel warm. They were diagnosed with depression during that time and wanting to feel like someone is constantly there to hug you is understandable. They eventually stopped smoking and it took a lot of courage and effort. It isn't an overnight thing. In fact, they jumped from cigarettes to vaping but tried stopping the moment they learnt how equally as bad vaping is for their health. So telling these people to just stop or ban vaping and cigarettes will not help. What could help is to keep pushing the long term health effects to these people and hope they take the step to stop either activities

You gotta love people. Society needs a huge makeover (pun not intended haha). Vaping is better than smoking cigarettes, 98% safer, according to UK scientific studies. Vaping dries you out, and has some negative consequences, sure, and I used to vape, but vaping is far safer than eating meat (being a non-vegan), being lazy, being fat, makeup, pills on the regular, etc. XD

:3 :3 I didn't even watch the video. I just pasted my comment, and submitted it 5 times in the comment section. Now I'm pasting this one around too. Haha. Plus, I gave likes. Plenty of propaganda from these companies indeed, as one person noted. Nicotine does increase testosterone shortly, cigars have been known to relax the heart (2 cigars a day barely has any risk of cancer, and plenty heart doctors recommend them I've heard), and it can some other health benefits. Nicotine unfortunately restricts your blood, short duration and sometimes cravings (for me, I never had cigarettes, and vaping was easy to stop for hours and days at a time), and some other negatives. Alcohol (alKILLhol) is still one of the very worst drugs. It's involved in over 50% of rape cases and automobile accidents, involved in a lot of other violence, causes cancer, shrinks the brain, and physical dependency can get so bad that going cold turkey has killed some people before. It's literally labelled a poison now in science. It mimics water so well that it enters cells and destroys them. Richard Nixon's scientific team even admitted during his presidency that weed is much safer than weed. They also admitted a lot of the drug war is just based on purposely dividing people, especially by ethnicity, especially against Blacks and Mexicans. It is known to have over 200 health issues from all it gets involved in. It wastes a ton of money. A lot of shady people use it. It makes problems worse. Even one serving is bad, and the 2 drinks a week maximum rule mostly isn't followed, as most people have much more than that a week. Lol... 💀💀💀 Andrew Huberman, viral neuroscientist podcaster.

:3 My drug of choice these days is coffee. It gives a sorta high, is healthy in moderation, helps exercise and work production, decreases risk of depression and suicide, tastes great, many different types, fights off dementia (being vegan fights it off more), women get horny from it (lol), one of the limited things in life that actually helps you produce more dopamine intake (your focus and drive, which many people have dopamine overload in today's electronic society, as the great Andrew Huberman says), etc. I used to have 10 or so servings at a time just fine. One cup is good for me. I don't even need it for energy, as a vegan, as someone who exercises, proper sleep, and staying hydrated (most Americans don't do this, about 75% don't, according to studies, and a 1-2% dehydration level can cause a bunch of tiredness, amongst other things). I'll drink multiple cups though when I'm not hurting on money. Also, as the great Andrew Huberman neuroscientist podcaster says, to wait at least an hour after waking to have coffee so that your cortisol isn't thrown out of balance so that you don't crash later, as he learned later in life. Huge difference! Unless of course you want the energy spike for an exercise, but it's just best to wait. Lol

What people keep failing to mention is that all these countries that banned vaping and all these "vaping is bad" propaganda are almost always sponsored or lobbied by the big tobacco industries in each particular country, from Singapore to Japan. Notice that vape products are banned in these countries, but not the much more harmful cigarette products. What we should be worried about is not the vaping industry, but the cigarette industry. They're much larger, have much more money to throw away towards lobbying, marketing and propaganda.

Singapore's earnings from tobacco tax is not relevant for the budget, unlike for some other countries. I once looked into it, but I won't dig out these figures again. The government's reasoning is not vaping is harmful or anything like that, or even lesser, they would intend to protect smokers. Their reasoning is entirely based on the intention to block one more avenue to drug addiction. Singapore does not produce cigarettes. China is the biggest producer. I do understand Singapore's policy, albeit I still do not agree with it. I personally stopped a 40 years long smoking habit with the help of a vaping device, and therefore I know how effective it can be.

^_^ :3 It's funny how they're worried about vaping, but they probably drink alcohol, probably cannot leave the house without makeup on to please people with their so-called beauty (if they're female), probably take pills regularly because they have a bad diet and are too lazy to exercise, and probably they sit too much too. XD

:D :3 I didn't even watch the video.

😮My drug of choice these days is coffee. Lol

Myself, I've been a longtime smoker ever since I was 16-17 and I've been smoking until the age of 29. I've switched to vaping since then for a less harmful alternative. Any smoker knows the hardest part of quitting isn't the nicotine addiction, its the habit you build over the years. Having a smoke after a meal, having a smoke with your coffee etc., this builds habits that just makes it harder to let go. Vaping has drastically made things better for me personally, my breathing is better, I don't cough and I don't experience shortness of breath during any activity. On the other hand, vaping definitely needed more and better regulating with how widespread it has become. Not to mention the amount of fake vaping products on the market that could potentially have extremely harmful substances in their e-liquids. I have friends who have never been smokers pick up vaping and to me its mind boggling. If you're a smoker trying to find a lesser evil I understand but if you've never been trapped in the cage of conventional smoking to begin with you should never consider vaping.

My dad use to be a former smoker and started to smoke in the military. It took him years of cigarettes and nicotine gum to quit. Once he quit he started to get into stocks and he bought a stock with a small company Juul. I immediately knew what it was because I was in school learning about it from kids so I told him it’s a nicotine company for a younger audience and he immediately sold his stock. With heavy marketing like that; big events, competitions with big prizes, exclusive places like cafe for the community, etc; it's not a way to stop smoking anymore, it's just change one addiction and replace it with other addiction. As an ex-heavy smoker, if someone really want to stop smoking I think they should have a clear goal, not only change their cigarettes with vape and hoping they can stop someday while vaping almost every minutes.

As a Malaysian high school student living in Indonesia, I am so glad to see that this is indeed an issue that needs to be talked about and addressed. I genuinely found it bewildering how normalised vaping is among my peers, both in Indonesia and when I return to Malaysia. Nobody seems to find it a problem at all?!?! I understand the need to use vapes as an alternative to smoking. However, I can't help but think, regarding my student peers, if you had not previously had a smoking or nicotine addiction, why start vaping in the first place? It truly baffles me, though there are probably lots of factors I do not see or understand in my shoes. I'd really love to sympathise and understand because it saddens me to know so many kids around me are putting themselves, mentally and physically, through something potentially harmful in the long run.

That's how addictions and trends at large start. Many people try cigarettes and vaping for the first time because others around them use these products and it becomes a societal norm, not because they necessarily want to-but for many, once the nicotine hits there's no stopping. One cigarette a day soon becomes ten and there's your nicotine addiction. It doesn't help that teens are known in studies to be more susceptible to nicotine addiction.

Because cigarettes can burn out, you'll know when to stop puffing, and it's up to you to light another one or not. Vapes don't burn out and you'll keep puffing like crazy until you realize you've been doing it for hours, which is worse than having 2 sticks every 3 to 4 hours.

Once you start vaping, sure the first couple days or weeks, you dont puff the vape too much cause of nicotine OD making you feel sick, but after a while that tolerance goes up so fast you dont even realize it. Pass the 7 days and the crazy craving is almost gone, after 2 weeks I dont feel like the need to smoke a cigg I do still get the tingling to try but not as hard when I started to switch. Was using 6mg, now going 3mg, I'll keep cutting the nic and how many ML used until I dont feel like vaping anymore. The end goal is to stop inhaling anything but air of course. Few things I notice after I switch: My body and mouth doesnt smell as bad, my partner always said I smell like ash tray :( My sleep schedule going normal/ I am able to sleep faster. (I wake in the middle of the night on early stage of switching, after 3 weeks or so I no longer woke up in the middle of the night). Better performance on physical activity :) My body felt better waking up in the morning. Been smoking since highschool, 9 years passed and I really thought I could not stop smoking, but vape changed this, now I'm on my way to quit vaping, so you should use vape as a method to cut/ quit smoking at all. quit smoking more than 10years ago when vaping was just new. i quit smoking immediately and quit vaping after 6 months since i gradually reduced the nicotine. My opinion, its a tool to quit smoking. I too believe its the lesser evil than tobacco smoking.

Yeah I'm currently addicted to nicotine still at 25. I started smoking at 13 or so very lightly, but by 15-18 it was becoming rather heavy. From 19-22 it was significantly reduced but still smoking at social events (0-few times a month), or the rare solo cigarette (under 5 times a year). But since around 23-today it's been as heavy if not heavier as my 15-18 days. I'd say over 85% was vaping, 15% cigs or some form of tobacco (with a rise recently in cigs for some reason). Until recently, I've kept coughing a lot since I was around 15, and since 24 I've started developing chest tightness / pain / feels like im being pressed on. Basically since around 23 to today this is the heaviest smoking period of my life since 15-18, but now it's with chest pains sometimes. Comes and goes, can be very annoying it's like it's replacing the less frequent cough now. Lung xray came back negative, may try to go deeper but it seems clear just stop smoking anything and it should help. I'm just flat out addicted. I just finished smoking daily with those devilish vapes after being laid off for a few months straight. I don't even really feel that buzzed anymore when I hit them after taking a week or two off from them and trying again. I want to improve my health, and these things are so addictive and especially hard to quit when I'm on alcohol. I'm working on trying to not buy vapes anymore (about 2 months since last one I bought died), and try my best to only smoke when I'm on alcohol (being around friends who have it plus the craving is really difficult to resist). I don't know - but it's a mission for me to try to make this a very occasional habit like once a month or here and there socially. I do not want to buy a vape again, and that's my goal.

Vaping got me off cigarettes and i'm grateful i had that option. It was definitely much, much better than cigarettes, but now i've quite vaping too, that's much, much better than vaping. There really needs to be much more structure in place to protect younger people, i completely support regulations for that. At the same time we shouldn't throw smokers under the bus, it's an incredibly tough thing to quit, partly because it's so weaved into social interactions and groups. Quitting smoking can mean being excluded from the social circle, and it's not always possible to find another one or to tolerate the pain of exclusion.

It's hard to convince one to quit smoking/vaping. At the other side, as someone who never smoke, I was invited a couple times from my friends and colleagues to vape. Vaping has became a young culture, and people around me think that it is cool to vape, but didn't realize the underlying risk from those undefined ingredients in those liquids. There are no regulations for the production of vape, which makes the integrity of product ingredients not trustworthy. Sometimes, when most of your colleagues or friends vape, it also created peer pressure to fit in a certain community. Especially for teenagers, they are easily influenced by friends, and not informed on the cons of vaping. It's dangerous, and disappointing that the data shows about 10 percent of vapers are teenagers. Vaping shouldn't be labelled as 'cool' and 'trendy' but should be marketed fitting to its real purpose.

I myself smoked a lot for 7 years and I enjoyed it. But now as I am in my early 30's, I made the concious effort to stop this habit, or rather addiction, because I want to change my life and lean towards healthy lifestyle. I admit I still use vape as a tool to combat smoking but here's hoping to stop inhaling nicotine very soon. I don't hate smoking as it helped me cope during my darkest days. To those who want to stop smoking, I know it is hard but I know you can do it.

Stop Vaping while you can. Its seems harder to quit vaping then smoking cigs. Vaping isn't as harsh on the throat, it smells good, tastes good, and its readily available. If you think you are having issues quitting smoking, you need to acknowledge that its 100x harder to quit vaping. Quit while you can, I'm trying myself but it impossible.

I was a vaporista for five years, honestly it made me quit smoking. Customers had experienced the same, but some only do it for lifestyle. Me as a vaporista never tell customer that vape is good for health, but much more better then health. We know vaping is still bad but some people don't how hard it is to quit smoking. Even eating instant noodle is bad for your health. Some of the customers I know are still vaping till now and even take liquids with higher nicotine, some stopped and never came back to the store, some quit vaping and switched back to smoking. In Indonesia vaping is already regulated expecially for liquid producers, so only certified brands are able to produce liquid that are sold to vapestores. Not like back then, where everybody can make their own liquid. Our store policy is never sell to underage customers and we will ask for ID if we feel that the customer is an underage, sometimes we laugh at them when they come and tell them to comeback 10 years later. Even online shop are restricted too, only account that has verified their ID that can see vape products and if you search for vape items on an android phone, it is restricted so you could only see it only through ios or desktop. We tried our best to not sell to minors, but some parents buy liquid for their own son. Some small stores that are opened in their own house and sell vape to underage. They don't care about 18+ cause all they think is profit because it is a profitable business here in Indonesia. Some even sell unregulated liquids and these stores usually sell below the regulated price and makes some big stores close their shop. It's hard when some people fail to follow the regulations, and it is a crisis for now since I see a lot of underage vaping now. Well let's hope there's a change for the regulation where not all people can easliy open up stores here in Indonesia. I still vape for now, good for you guys who don't smoke. For the ones battling hard to quit smoking, goodluck.

In the Netherlands they recently did a full ban on vape products that have flavours added and only allow the tobacco flavoured ones, and they're only allowed to be sold by specialist retailers who also sell common tobacco. There's some sort of sneaky trap set by the tobacco industry and vaping is the new "healthy cigarette". It's not healthy and never will be healthy. And this is not the first time they did this. Before the filter cigarette came on the market, the smoker's cough was already noted and people died left and right. So they made the filter, and that would make it "healthy". Recommended by doctors!!! Buy now!!!

It's an international scandal that vaping companies have been allowed to develop and market products that are designed to draw children into nicotine addiction. These products are fine for harm reduction in smokers, but it should have been obvious that without regulation these companies would go after the youth market.

I am a 13yr cigarette smoker, then switched to vaping. Now I still enjoy vaping for the last 7years. yes it's against the goal, which is to actually stop. But I hope the vaping industry can be completely regulated as I myself was alarmed on the growing population of young vapers. for an ex smoker like me, I clearly understand that it was not fully safe. even the McDonald's you buy, you know it's bad for you and can eventually end up on something bad. But it was indeed a relief to fully stop my smoking addiction. Regulation on the highest level is a must. This will provide prohibitions on underage vaping, and also will ensure that vaping will not be a parasite that needs to be eradicated one day.

Ironically smoking cigs was a gateway to real nicotine addiction for me. I casually smoked in university, a few here and there per week, and for first few years of working did it because others did. Max I got to was maybe 5 per day during the week, never on weekends, and could easily take weeks off. It smelled gross on my clothes and I'd just never let it become a full-time thing. I then tried nicotine lozenges and started to up my intake because I could have one in my mouth at all times, even while I worked. When I tried to stop those cold turkey like I could before with cigs, I felt what real withdrawal was like. Out of body anxiety, it was insane. I then started vaping as an alternative. In Canada at the time, 5% was sold. That stuff was powerful, and withdrawals were insane, even worse than the mints. More time went by and Nicotine mints at this point gave me heartburn, so I wasn't interested in those, and smoking was even more disgusting to me. What actually saved me was when my country banned anything above 2% vape pods. For a while my lungs were feeling gross, so I had been thinking of quitting, but the withdrawals were too much. When they stopped selling high percentage, it sucked at first and I was pissed, but I could start to more easily take little breaks. After a while I realized it basically did nothing for me other than feel normal, but at least because it was lower percentage, it was easier to get off. I finally decided to quit it all this past Christmas. The first few days were hell, and for the next month I had pretty strong cravings here and there, but stuck with it. Happy to still be nicotine-free.

While I am certainly going to be an EXTREME outlier, I only started vaping nicotine about 50mg/ml concentration of nicotine off of my neurologist's recommendation as he needed me to be using a stimulant that wasn't a classed substance (class 3 by DEA here in the US-> amphetamine type) to help treat side effects of chronic pain and dysautonomia as im already on a class 2 from pain management for severe chronic pain conditions and a class 4 from my neurologist (same who recommended me to vape nicotine) for adult onset tourettes which in my case is a result from long-term untreated/undertreated severe chronic pain. My pain management provider has stated his support for me to vape as for reasons we don't understand as to why it does work but we do know that it is working to help with the effectiveness and efficiency of the class 2 medication that he has me on. While my cardiologist and pulmonary provider aren't a fan of me vaping, they do understand why my neurologist and pain management provider has me vaping nicotine so they do keep a close eye on me and my body (heart and lungs). Granted, I didn't start vaping nicotine until I was 32, so while I do have resulting brain damage from the untreated and undertreated chronic pain (many years of this), my brain was fully functional/formed. Prior to vaping nicotine I wasn't someone who touched any form of nicotine apart from childhood second and third hand tobacco smoke courtesy of family members who smoked.
