• Southeast US Railroad ...
Finally got this done! Interestingly enough, the crossing at the beginning and the crossing at the end are the two signalized crossings from Gurley, AL. This video is also almost three and a half hours long, so you might want to make sure you have plenty of time to watch this in. It also contains 126 different railroad crossings. My camera also liked to shut off early a couple of times for some reason, so a few of these recordings might not show the signals shutting off all the way. The vast majority of the crossings I recorded this year also had incandescent lights.
2016 wasn't that great a year for the world as a whole, but it was one of my best years railfanning. I caught several new trains (due to a few old ones on the NS Memphis District East End being removed and/or replaced) and railfanned in Kentucky, Georgia, and Florida for the first time. I also saw a much greater variety in crossing equipment this year than last year, including a crossing with four mechanical bells! I was also able to record some General Signals Type 3 electronic bells for the first time in 2016, along with recording 8 inch GRS Lex-C lights as well. Monroe Street's crossing in Courtland, AL was also closed, but the signals got re-installed at Jackson Street in the same town to replace the aging gateless signals there. Alabama Street in Courtland, AL also had the signals there get replaced, along with the signals at Old Trinity Road in Trinity, AL and Mooresville Road in Bella Mina, AL. Market Street in Athens also got the signals replaced with gated cantilevers, including a pedestrian signal on one side of the crossing. This crossing also had one of the first known installs of Leotek EV series LEDs. During 2016, I was also able to get every single public signalized crossing in Madison County, AL recorded. I was also able to find a few CSX crossings that still retained the which emergency information signs, along with an NS crossbuck crossing in Decatur, AL which still had one. I also managed to find a crossing in Tennessee with a mechanical school bell as the bell in use on it.
There were several changes to the railroads as well, other than Norfolk Southern getting rid of, rerouting, and creating several trains. Norfolk Southern got ET44AC engines in the first part of the summer, and the HMCR got three B38-8s, though one of them was out of commission for the entire year. CSX also retired all of their standard-cab GEs during 2016, and sent a number of them back to GE, IIRC. I was also able to catch various other railroads' Tier-4 GEVOs this year, such as CSX, BNSF, and UP. All three of those railroads got their Tier-4s back in 2015.

@ Anthony Bondi Give Princeton, Indiana a try trains run through here almost like day and night the only time that there might be fewer trains will be between the hours of 6:00 pm-8:00 pm the rest of the time it is almost a mad house train after train including the intermodal trains, usually my roommate and I go where we can catch a lot of them, we have some very unusual spots for instance when we are in Evansville, we usually go by Howell Yard and we can catch some action there, another good spot is the Depot in Princeton, don’t know of many in Vincennes but you have some good spots that you go to. Don’t dismiss the Southwestern parts of Indiana.

@freebrickproductions
@freebrickproductions 5 жыл бұрын
Well, the FRA only requires a minimum activation time of 20 seconds before the train enters the crossing, and most railroads have their crossings set to automatically activate about 25-30 seconds before the train reaches the crossing.

@@freebrickproductions in Spain it's you have to wait 10 minutes in railroad crossing 🤣
@jovetj
@jovetj 5 жыл бұрын
The reason for long wait times at level crossings in Europe is that they typically have special signals or regular train signals which indicate the state of a level crossing's protection. In other words, an unsecure level crossing will cause the signal system to tell the train to stop. In order for the train to stop in time, the level crossing has to be activated very early so that the signal system can let the train come to a safe stop.

Hi, can you tell me the time when I can see a freigth train running through Market St., Athens? Best
@freebrickproductions
@freebrickproductions 5 жыл бұрын
Usually I just go out there and wait for a while. If it helps any, to the south is a siding, and if any of the block signals at the siding show anything other than red, then a southbound train will be coming within the next hour or two. Also, there's an online scanner feed for both the CSX and NS mainlines in the area that's based out of Decatur. Any northbounds will hit a defect detector on the south side of Decatur and then will be calling the signals out as they pass them in Decatur before asking for permission from NS and the Decatur Bridge Tender to cross the Tennessee River.

WCH, IIRC. WRRS and Federal Signal also made ones of both styles. WRRS ones use Union Metal bases, while Federal Signal and WCH have a different base with a tag on it (usually) that names the manufacturer. Both cantilevers at 6:18 are Federal Signal/WCH, BTW. The left-hand one is just an extendable variant of the right-hand one.

At 1:41 was this originally an open crossing? Same with 8:03 8:03 also has a faulty gate mechanism [left one] At 11:49 what's that crossing further down the road? At 13:28 if you look very carefully, you can see that the two signals are out of sync. At 16:07 why does the bell[s] shut off before both gates are lowered? At 17:32 is that a gate light on top of the closest cantilever? At 18:22 doesn't that count as misuse? At 18:36 why 2 bells on one side? At 20:07 this crossing is just plain confusing. why put a third signal in? Surely it would be cheaper to put a crash barrier down and make traffic use the T-junction? And they can just drive around the far right gate. At 24:39 that train was making one hell of a racket! At 17:00 why did the traffic light change back to green after the gates started to descend? At 28:43 surely they need gates on that thing. Or they need to put in some kind of alert for more than one train. At 30:00 Wow a gate stabiliser! and sagging gate on close left signal. At 32:44 is it that one of the bells is dead or is it that they are perfectly in sync? At 35:09 why did the emergency info face into the crossing? At 38:59 That took a long time for the gates to raise. At 40:56 what was that crossing with E-bells that can be heard just before the videoed crossing activated? At 45:45 what would happen if the gate hits one of the overhead lights? At 46:23 that crossing needs gates At 50:26 dead bell? At 54:35 is it just me or did one signal start up later than the other? At 58:02 what an epic catch! At 1:05:20 was that the broken light lying on the ground just to the left of the right hand signal? At 1:05:39 wait... Cantilever gate mechs? At 1:70:08 MISUSE!!!! At 1:20:28 what the heck is wrong with the bell? At 1:25:46 what are the middle two lights for on the traffic lights? At 1:27:05 whoa! Re- activation! At 1:34:00 nice catch with the teardrop. At 1:39:41 why put brand new signals on a permanently closed road? At 1:4:18 I think you'll agree all crossings look better at night. At 1:58:45 what the heck is going on with the right signal setup? At 2:11:56 why have two sets of back lights on the left cantilever? At 2:15:21 What append to the right hand cantilever? At 2:18:00 why isn't there more than one bell? At 2:20:57 what an absolute twit! There was even a sign to say not to stop on the tracks! At 1:27:43 I thought that red flashing lights and descending gates meant stop... At 2:31:30 the closest gate mech needs a dampen putting in. At 2:25:34 what happened to that E-bell? At 2:37:57 I've commented on this crossing before... And where are the mast lights? At 2:46:41 if looked at from the right angle, the HMCR locos look like a gate o the crossing. At 2:50:17 what are the right signals higher lights for? At 2:53:26 is it just me or did those gate mechs rev a lot? At 2:54:49 again, that crossing needs gates. P.S. I prefer it if you didn't include the trains. It makes the video a lot less time consuming to watch. Don't get me wrong it is a great video, but I needed to keep KZbin open all night to keep this comment saved.

1:41/8:03 - No. 1:41 is how the L&N did their gated set-ups for a long time, and 8:03 had the original gate masts replaced back in the 1990s. 8:03 - The gate mechanism doesn't go all the way up due to the power line that would be struck by the gate arm if it did. 11: 49 - Elledge Lane #2 in Muscle Shoals, AL. Should be shown in this video as well. www.rxrsignals.com/Alabama/Muscle_Shoals/Elledge2/ 13:28 - I'm not really seeing it. 16:07 - The bell at the crossing is wired through the farther gate mech, which lowers much quicker than the closer one. 17:32 - Yes, with a blue lens in it. 18:22 - Yes and no. Since the train had already cleared the crossing, they could proceed on through, as long as they had stopped first. 18:36 - The bell on the cantilever was disconnected when the new masts were installed back in the 1980s by CSX, and has never been removed. 8:03 is a similar situation. 20:07 - Traffic from the right is only allowed to turn right, with right-turn traffic only being the traffic allowed onto the side street. The one signal sits in a traffic island that directs the two right-turn movements, thus traffic can't go around the gate. 24:39 - There was a ton of people (from the nearby high school, it appeared) hanging around the tracks just up the line from the crossing at another crossing in the area. 26:40 - That is so that any cars on the tracks waiting at the traffic light can clear the crossing when it activates. 28:43 - The crossing is in a small yard along the ATN's line between Gadsden and Birmingham, AL. The crossing only sees about one train a day anyways (not including any switching going on in the yard). 30:00 - Both cantilever signals there have gate stabilizers. 32:44 - The latter. 35:09 - Because NS. When the blue DOT tags were initially adopted by them, they had them facing towards the road. This meant that the gated signals and gate masts for cantilevers had them facing right into the gate arm/conversion bracket. Oops! 38:59 - The train was moving really slowly. 40:56 - Church Street, Town Creek, AL. www.rxrsignals.com/Alabama/Town_Creek/Church/ 45:40 - It would get stuck on the light-head. 46:23 - It does. The two crossings around it see less traffic but have gates while this one doesn't, for some reason. 50:26 - It works, but is way, way to quiet. It's part of the reason why Safetran Type 2/NEG e-bells are my least favorite bell (apart from being very bland sounding). 54:35 - One signal does start before the other. I've seen a few other crossings that do that as well. 58:02 - Thanks! I was kinda on the wrong side for this one though. 1:05:20 - Yes. Redneck Railfanner now has the light in his possession. 1:05:39 - Yep! They're rather rare though. I usually only see them used in areas where there isn't enough room for a standard gated cantilever set-up. 1:07:08 - I've seen worse. 1:20:28 - It's quite literally a mechanical school bell/fire alarm bell used instead of a standard crossing bell there. Why? I guess because the L&N was tight on cash at the time. 1:25:46 - As far as I can tell, absolutely nothing! One even has a broken lens. 1:27:05 - Tail-ring malfunctions are always fun! 1:34:00 - Thank you. It's the only active Teardrop I've been able to record. Have yet to get the one in Odenville, AL on the ATN. 1:39:41 - Signals were installed two years before the crossing was closed, and I don't think NS or Courtland, AL ever anticipated that the crossing would've gotten closed at the time. They got re-used at the next crossing over though. 1:46:18 - That was actually the late evening on a cloudy day, though I do agree they look nice in the dark. Hard to film them then though. 1:58:45 - I think the 8 inch lights at the bottom were meant to be side lights originally, facing eastbound traffic on US 72 that was turning left, before the intersection of AL 65 and US 72 was redone. 2:11:56 - Because there are no rear mast lights. 2:15:21 - Because it's an extendable RACO cantilever. Moulton Street in Decatur has Federal Signals's equivalent to that. 2:18:00 - Because either it's a direct replacement of the old L&N/NC&StL signals that were at the crossing, or CSX figured that the WCH mechanical bell was loud enough for the crossing when the signals got installed back in the 1990s. 2:20:57 - That don't stop everyone though. 2:27:43 - Some people just don't care, or need to get to their destination by yesterday, or just think the rules don't apply to them as they are _The Most Important Person On The Road_ (or _TMIPOTR_, for short). 2:31:30 - The signals haven't gotten much maintenance since the ATN took over the line from CSX. 2:35:34 - That's a Safetran "Type 1" e-bell. They were just made that way. IDK why, but it was rather flimsy (and probably more of them have been removed due to the supports breaking rather than the bell dying). 2:37:57 - You probably have, and no idea why there's no mast lights other than the side lights. 2:46:41 - Those reflective stripes do kinda look like that... 2:50:17 - Side lights at the crossing for a driveway right next to the tracks. 2:53:26 - It's not just you. The gate mech on the right seems to be aging rapidly since it was put back up on the replacement signal. 2:54:49 - The HMCR doesn't want gates (for reasons I've stated several times before), but Airport Road and Governors Drive are both crossings along their line that could probably use some gates.

Thank you so much for the information! I realise it must have taken you as long to reply as it took me to wright it up. However there is one that i missed. At 47:10 The signal on the left is just a waste of money. And it makes 3 pairs of lights: To set, Bottom set, Vertical set. But again, please leave the trains out.
@freebrickproductions
@freebrickproductions 7 жыл бұрын
47:10 - The lights are set-up that way, as the city of Athens planted a tree in front of the signal, which grew and blocked the main lights. So CSX went and installed a newer signal with another set of lights on it. However, the tree has grown some more, blocking both sets of lights. I'm not really planning on it, as most people probably want to see the trains in these. I know with my Railroad Crossings videos, people always complain about how I leave the trains out in those.

Why were the trains at 1:17:50 and 1:22:30 really slow? What are the names of the crossings anyway?
@freebrickproductions
@freebrickproductions 7 жыл бұрын
They are literally just outside of the Sheffield Yard, so trains go slow to enter the yard. In the case of the second one, the train going through it had stopped next to the crossing at a red signal while the train at the first one entered the yard. The first one is Gnat Pond Road near Leighton, AL. The second one is Marthaler Lane, also near Leighton, AL.
