Hi! I'm a 65 yr old guy who just started cooking with cast iron less than a year ago. I stumbled onto your video quite by accident while searching for recipes for cast iron cookware. Last night I mixed up a batch of the Southern Angel Biscuits (per your instructions) and refrigerated them overnight. Took them out of the refrigerator this morning, followed the directions provided, used a 2 3/4" biscuit cutter and ended up with 25 wonderful biscuits that put to shame anything from a store and as good as any restaurant. I had enough dough to make the Cinnamon Rolls, so I embarked on that adventure. Long story short, I had enough Cinnamon Rolls to fill a 10" cast iron skillet. The biscuits filled a 10" and 8" cast iron skillet. there were 13 in the larger and 12 in the smaller skillet. I took pics during the process and of the finished product. Thank you so much for these two recipes! (Sometimes, old dogs can learn new tricks!)

Too bad we can’t see your handiwork! I’m always hitting up thrift stores on the hunt for enamel coated cast iron cookware. I scored big on a 9 inch skillet for only $4! It’s been my newest and best pan for making Angel biscuits. I think I’ll follow your cue and use the other half of my dough to make some cinnamon rolls. Happy baking!

Never mind my question if biscuits have to be refrigerated over night +Rainbow Garden. I just read the recipe on the Southern Living website which said to chill dough for an hour then make biscuits. But it is good to know that they can be left in the fridge overnight as shown by you here. I will use half of the dough to make biscuits this morning and get up and make the other half tomorrow. Thank you so much for sharing both recipes!
@RainbowGardens8 жыл бұрын
Thanks so much! We just finished our Saturday morning breakfast & had the biscuits. I made the dough Tuesday. It keeps very well in the fridge. I let it rest in the fridge loosely covered for a few hours then I put it in a plastic bag tightly closed to keep it from drying out. If you don't bag it well, it will dry out quickly and is not good for using.
@beautenaturelle99898 жыл бұрын

I made these biscuits both ways. You're right, the Southern Living recipe was a bit lighter, but; it was your Mamaw's receipt that just hit the right spot for me. My family and I prefer your Mamaw's receipt overall. Goes great with gravy, white, brown or dark; it doesn't matter, it still tasted great. Thank-You.

My grandmother's recipe was similar to yours. Her recipe had the fresh made biscuits to sit in the pan for an hour to double in size before baking rather than chill in the refrigerator over night. The biscuits rose by the yeast and the baking powder (no baking soda in her recipe) which made soft, fluffy biscuits. She would make the biscuits a the night before, cut them out and place in the refrigerator for a slow yeast rise. In the morning let them warm up and place in a cool oven then turn the temp of the oven up.

@@alancarnell2747 I was in East Tennessee 60's 70's, I bet they were using the same product. I remember seeing a big pan in the dumpster that had a picture of dinner rolls on it. I think they purchased them they were too consistent to be homemade and that would have been a lot of work for the woman to make bread all the time.
