Not gonna lie, I’ve always loved the GS6’s more than the GS4’s. The GS6’s simple black and silver paint looked beautiful when leading either freight or passenger consists. Also their silver pilot looked beautiful at night, it really stood out in camera flashes.

Thank you, C Vision for this Steam special! All these places are around where I live. Born in 53', I just missed out on all this steam action 😢 I did get to see the 4449 twice. Once it stopped for the night in Santa Barbara. In the A. M. we watched her back up to her train headed for L.A. what a beautiful Engine. Got to meet the engineer. He had a photographer bugging him to blow the whistle a certain way, & he got pissed. "Well you wanna get up in the cab and take her? I got a lot on my mind pal" I loved it. His name was Doyle i think. Anyways, thanks guys. P.j . Carpinteria Calif

5:06 that may be the same steam wrecker was later destroyed in a runaway accident on the Soledad Canyon line in July 1966. A conductor named Johnny Oswald rode it to his death in a futile attempt to stop it. I remember reading once that it was assigned as the Bakersfield hook. I used to work on a preserved sister at the Antique Powerland Museum in Brooks, OR.

They seem to be mislabled, but this might be the first production I've seen of every class of GS from Lima, and even beyond! GS-2, 3, 4, 5, and 6 are all here. We also have Baldwin GS's represented with the GS-7's (those 4-8-4's with the lower square tenders)

I was a letter carrier in Tracy (1988-2008). On my postal route, lived several retired locomotive engineers. Occasionally, they'd tell me about there lives on the SP Railroad. I was a child when steam was phased out & I have a vague recollection about them. We lived on the SF Peninsula, about a mile from the SP tracks & we'd see the SP yards when we went to visit relatives in SF.

My grandpa was an engineer for the SP out of Bakersfield, CA. I remember meeting him at the yard when I was 4yrs old, he would carry me back to the house and I would listen to his watch tick. I am 70 now and have his watch, pictures of him on the cab forwards and the Daylight. Might be him in one of theose locos.

Was interesting to see the 4281 with no road name on the tender. I'm guessing it was on the scrap line, and was pulled out by a motive power shortage. Also interesting is the differences in the warning lights between the 4458 and the 4439.

2:05 It's nice to see only preserved GS-4 class Daylight #4449 in revenue service on film during the days of steam. She's my most favorite steam locomotive. My grandparents, two uncles and my dad saw her with the American Freedom Train in February 1976 while living at San Antonio, Texas. I got a chance to see 4449 at Train Festival 2009 in Owosso, Michigan. Definitely worth a lifetime to see this beautiful streamlined steamer.

4472 is a GS1, originally built for Texas And New Orleans as their No.702, later acquired by Southern Pacific in 1953, renumbered to 4404, and last renumbered to 4472. 4472 would be retired from the roster and scrapped on July 9th 1956.
