I had forgotten about lovely Ann Ladbury, didn't she have her own sewing show too? What a beautiful woman she was and so glamorous with it. A real, old fashioned lady, like my mum!

Pauline Parrington the one in the burgundy jumper with the bowl haircut was my cookery teacher at secondary school in the late eighties, there was always talk that she's been on TV.

You can tell the old class differences here. I think Mary thinks Vivienne is a bit 'common'. Well its clear she is, she admits to liking sliced white bread! Mary is of course not far off landed gentry (but not actually) and Ann Ladbury is the go ahead business woman, and thereby is a bit of mystery to everyone else. Cherry is an old school theatrical but well connected and probably friends with a friend of Princess Margaret.

Seems there are loads of us 40-somethings who watched this as kids when we were off school - my mum never missed an episode. It was a strange concept, as a kid I honestly thought it was a real party at someone's house and didn't think for a moment it was an actual set-up TV show! I also loved Crown Court, Paint Along With Nancy, The Sullivans, The Cedar Tree, Pebble Mill at One... and kids shows like Pipkins, Bagpuss, The Clangers, Mr Benn, Mary, Mungo and Midge oh and that funny show with the two spiders who were hand puppets and a lady called Susan Stranks I think.. can't recall what it was called, anyone know?!
@oscoe8 жыл бұрын
Wow crikey, your memories and experiences are identical to mine!!! I was totally baffled by Houseparty :) not a clue what it's point was!! The spider glove puppet things - my sister had one as a toy!! Can't recall the name of it but can see the spiders in my mind!!! :)

Just looked it up....Paperplay....there's an episode on here!! Spiders were a bit freaky...:)
@glamdolly308 жыл бұрын
Paperplay - that was it! Oh you star - I've got to find the video here. I guess it's a sure sign you're getting old when you think telly used to be so much better years ago. But you know what? It was!

What was VW's sketch called? I can't find it and I'd love to watch
@Mishima5053 жыл бұрын
@@charlies8833 it was a programme called Victoria Wood: As Seen On TV which was a mix of stand-up, monologues, sketches and the marvellous soap opera Acorn Antiques. I think some episodes are still on KZbin.

@@Mishima505 I've seen As Seen on TV! I just wondered what specific sketch of hers parodied Houseparty
@Mishima5053 жыл бұрын
@@charlies8833 it was one she did with Julie Walters, two housewives just taking crap, can’t remember the name.
When Keith Martin was the duty in-vision announcer on Anglia Television his introductions were a hoot. He would join in with the opening conversations with such remarks as 'I dont believe that' or something like 'Oh! really?'

Pebble Mill at one followed by this, my Mum used to take her afternoon nap watching Alan Titch on Pebble Mill and fell asleep as this came on and somewhere in between was a programme called Yoga for Health, with the theme tune which was the Riff from David Bowie's Major Tom or did I just dream that?

Or post menopausal depression or their husbands' failing libido or vaginal dryness. Of course not, it wasn't "naice". Dreadful, dreadful programme.

Why didn't Victoria Wood have a pop at this ? It's just crying out for parody and she would have been perfect with Celia Imrie and Julie Walters.
