I was there when southern television signed off for the last time back then when i was in the uk in 1973-1995 I was crying and sobbing when Southern announced that they lost their franchise i always loved watching how day by day space 1999 and a few programmes. Also, My mom said i could stay up to see the station go. I even cried during And it's goodbye from us, I was already crying just as Mr Robbie said the last words of the special. Just as the camera started to show one of the many members of the company I was in tears i was like i will surely miss all of this guys. And just when the last logo played when the compass spun back to space and the jingle quietly playrd for the last time and the snow appeared on screen I was really in tears and i was crying and sobbing and went back to bed very sad.

Ed Welch was certainly a genius when it came to producing catchy television theme tunes. The Coast to Coast theme was very memorable and it was effectively an extended version of the 1987 ident jingle, rather like Channel 4 had Fourscore for start-ups. Meridian started with their best idents in 1993 and it was downhill thereafter in terms of production values. The 1999 ITV hearts idents reduced that distinctive and elaborate eclipsed sun logo to a little smudge in a blue box. I barely remember Southern. They went off air when I was just three.

This is the voice of Vrillon, a representative of the Ashtar Galactic Command, speaking to you. For many years you have seen us as lights in the skies. We speak to you now in peace and wisdom as we have done to your brothers and sisters all over this, your planet Earth. We come to warn you of the destiny of your race and your world so that you may communicate to your fellow beings the course you must take to avoid the disaster which threatens your world, and the beings on our worlds around you. This is in order that you may share in the great awakening, as the planet passes into the New Age of Aquarius. The New Age can be a time of great peace and evolution for your race, but only if your rulers are made aware of the evil forces that can overshadow their judgments. Be still now and listen, for your chance may not come again. All your weapons of evil must be removed. The time for conflict is now past and the race of which you are a part may proceed to the higher stages of its evolution if you show yourselves worthy to do this. You have but a short time to learn to live together in peace and goodwill. Small groups all over the planet are learning this, and exist to pass on the light of the dawning New Age to you all. You are free to accept or reject their teachings, but only those who learn to live in peace will pass to the higher realms of spiritual evolution. Hear now the voice of Vrillon, a representative of the Ashtar Galactic Command, speaking to you. Be aware also that there are many false prophets and guides at present operating on your world. They will suck your energy from you - the energy you call money and will put it to evil ends and give you worthless dross in return. Your inner divine self will protect you from this. You must learn to be sensitive to the voice within that can tell you what is truth, and what is confusion, chaos and untruth. Learn to listen to the voice of truth which is within you and you will lead yourselves onto the path of evolution. This is our message to our dear friends. We have watched you growing for many years as you too have watched our lights in your skies. You know now that we are here, and that there are more beings on and around your Earth than your scientists admit. We are deeply concerned about you and your path towards the light and will do all we can to help you. Have no fear, seek only to know yourselves, and live in harmony with the ways of your planet Earth. We of the Ashtar Galactic Command thank you for your attention. We are now leaving the planes of your existence. May you be blessed by the supreme love and truth of the cosmos.

4.44 I hand drew all the animated magic dust movement for the 'Christmas at TVS' one! First I traced over the live action frames of the video on a 12 inch TV monitor. Then hand animated the shapes of the magic dust movement to match. These drawings were made into mattes for a sequence of sheets of black card, with random pin holes jabbed into them, shot frame by frame on a rostrum camera, against a backlight with a sparkle filter and coloured filter, on the lens. Shot on film, then added to the live footage in post production. Before computer animation was widely used.

It was originally way back called the ITA, which was re-named the IBA which owned the transmitters that the franchises broadcasted from[hence the announcements in the startups]. This became the ITC, which then merged with the BSC [British Standards Commission] and Oftel to become Ofcom as it is today. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Independent_Broadcasting_Authority

I've seen that final programme that southern put out on new years eve 1981, how depressing must that have been for the staff and presenters to have to do, everyone else in the other itv regions partying and they look like they were all stood in a line to be shot! And the ident drifting off into space like that well it was like a live television funeral was'nt it!!
@jane19756 жыл бұрын
@twitchygiraffe: They decided to throw a tantrum and a hissy fit about losing the franchise, put that sour grapes programme on and apparently didn't even do the startup IBA notice either that day. They also mocked TVS in a song, they were not the only franchise though to be sore losers, TWW did the same thing when they lost to Harlech, in fact they decided to bow out and leave a few months before the scheduled hand-over, leaving poor Harlech ( later renamed HTV ) and the ITA [later IBA and now Ofcom ]to "pick up" the pieces and the programming [theirs and TWW's] and since technically they were not supposed to hand-over yet, Harlech had to still go under TWW's name until that time. The irony with the Southern presenters was that many of them went on to work for TVS: Brian Nissen, Christopher Robbie both went on to do continuity for TVS in its early days, so not all of them lost their jobs when the franchise was taken over.
