Brooke I am laughing here in the UK that what you call ‘pockets’ are literally Pasties. Pasties literally were made for miners so they didn’t need plates (pasties here usually have more overlap of pastry as miners discarded that bit to not have to wash hands). But anything in pastry is good!
@AuntVickiesCraftCorner11 ай бұрын
Pasties have a totally different meaning here in the USA lol
@AuntVickiesCraftCorner11 ай бұрын
Pasties are something exotic dancers wear on their chest
@colettebishop217311 ай бұрын
You pronounce those "paysties" though, the kind you eat are pronounced "pahsties". The thick crimp round the edge of the pasty had two purposes, Cornish tin ore was often found along side arsenic bearing deposits, so it allowed the miners to eat their meal, without ingesting toxic heavy metals. Secondly, they threw the leftover crust down the mine to keep the Knockers (malevolent spirits that live in mines) happy, so they didn't pull out the pit props or collapse the tunnels!
@AuntVickiesCraftCorner11 ай бұрын
@@colettebishop2173 no we call them “pasties” because the are adhered to the chest. Google it
@raisingmitchells122411 ай бұрын
@@AuntVickiesCraftCorner we’re not debating what you call them. We’re just saying what we in the UK call Pasties is different. What you call pasties I would call a nipple tassel. Nothing wrong with those. Ours is usually a bit tastier unless you get something edible. And I am from Devon (county next to Cornwall so we have mines) these thing have been our history for hundreds of years. I am sure someone from the US will understand long running history is something people want to share.

You can cook a lot of stuff on a gas grill outside. 40 yrs ago before we got a gas stove in the house I made our breakfast including the coffee on our gas grill lol Amazed the hubby lol I cook this way with rice a roni alot and those pasta roni boxes
@tiffanyb476411 ай бұрын
You sure can! We have a gas grill (and a charcoal grill) with a burner on one side and we have a Coleman camping stove that has two burners and run on the small cans of butane. I live in Florida so we have hurricanes and we lose power for a few days sometimes a couple weeks. In 2004 I was pregnant with my oldest daughter we lost power for two weeks the storm went north of us changed patterns and came back around to us again and we lost it for two more weeks. It’s unpredictable how long we may be out of power. Before each storm we refill at least 5 propane tanks for the grill and we have plenty of charcoal for the other grill and keep stock of the cans of butane. We eat pretty normal with the grill and 3 burners. And we have a generator that runs our big freezer and fridge and freezer. I can cook pretty much anything on the grill plus have the burners. We just have to have water to wash dishes luckily our generator is big enough to run our well.

I have these type of "blessing bags" for families in our apartment complex ready to go with directions on how to make them. This is because my sweet "middle magpie" likes to tell her friends that we have food for moooonths....so when these friends need a hearty meal, they just whisper it to Magpie and she will come and "sneak a brown bag" for them to take home. For this reason, I have been "hoarding" the huge brown bags our walmart deliveries come in. She knows not to tell people what it is or who it is for and she is to never discuss it after she gives it to her friend. The certain adults also know I have extra food set aside for families, just in case. Thank you for sharing this.

Use the pasta water instead of butter and milk. It works in a pinch. That said….I’m out of ideas with that, for tuna.

These all looked good. Question though: How would you make hot pockets and casseroles without electricity? Do you have a gas oven or a camp oven or what?
@peggyward959211 ай бұрын
You can make a stovetop Dutch oven if you don’t own one. Get a frying pan with a lid, a smaller pan that fits inside it and three pennies. Set the small pan on the three pennies inside the frying pan. Put the items to be baked in the small pan. Cover with the frying pan lid. Place on the top of a kerosene heater, gas or charcoal grill or a propane stove. For months, I used this concept using an electric skillet to bake biscuits, cornbread, cakes and meatloaf. Make the meatloaf into patties for quicker results.

How do you find a blessing box? I tried to find some on NJ to donate to but I couldn’t find them. I’m not sure if it’s a thing there. I’m in Tennessee until Thursday and I’d love to go get some stuff to put in. Every winter my husband and I help our local Salvation Army with their homeless population. During “Cov” all the warming stations and soup kitchens were closed. If they were lucky they would get a bagged lunch. We took donations on Facebook from friends who either donated money or sent products to us and we made care packages that the Salvation army distributed. We would love to fill a blessing box before we head home. We are near Gatlinburg/Pigeon Forge area.

You can bake by using a Dutch oven pan. I’ve never owned one but used a large frying pan with a lid. Inside the frying pan put a smaller pan that is sitting on three pennies. This creates a slight gap between the two pans. Place the items to be baked in the smaller pan. Cover with the frying pan lid. I’ve used this method using an electric skillet and on the top of a kerosene heater to bake cakes, meatloaf, biscuits and cornbread. Meatloaf does better if it’s made into patties.
