The old M-39/I-96 stack is probably the best in Detroit or all of Michigan (love how you got both the M-39 and I-96 views). Regarding the thin pavement markings, MDOT is switching over to use only 6 inch pavement markings on freeways instead of the old 4 inch ones for future re-striping jobs. Thanks for the shoutout at the end! I need to do a lot of catching up, and as always, great video!
@AsphaltPlanet13 жыл бұрын
I didn't realize the MDOT was going to switch to the wider 6" pavement markings. I suppose that makes sense. Caltrans has switched in recent years, and I could see the wider markings become the norm through North America as things continue to standardize for self driving vehicles. Thanks for the comment.

Wow - I grew up a mile from the Southfield Fwy, at 6 Mile (McNichols) and Greenfield in the 1960s. I can remember when the I-96 interchange was being constructed. And one time the police pulled me and two of my brothers off the pedestrian overpass near 7 Mile Road because we were trying to get truckers to blast their whistles... police said we were a "distraction" to the truck drivers. I was probably 9 or 10 years old. My best friend lived a block or two from the 5 Mile / Grand River exit. I wonder what that neighborhood looks like these days...

Woah! I like these segments. And also, on the first one, why did you start on John C Lodge Freeway and took the exit to Southfield Freeway, and why did you start on I-94 and took the exit to I-96 on the second segment?

5:30 Speed Limit 70 on an Urban Freeway? That is just Amazing!

@jonathanselevators3 жыл бұрын
@@joshnkoy I think that cities like Detroit, Grand Rapids, Salt Lake City, Dallas, and Houston should be a great example as to why cities should raise there speed limits on freeways to 70mph. Because listen most of all cities in the US have there freeways designed for up to 70+ mph. Kudos to those cities that I cited for there high speed limits.

Great video! I know you did road trip videos in state of Georgia. Are you aware that every Interstate highways in state of Georgia has a unsigned state route numbers? Here's list of them (SR means State Route): I-75 - SR 401 I-20 - SR 402 I-85 - SR 403 I-16 - SR 404 I-95 - SR 405 I-59 - SR 406 I-285 - SR 407 I-475 - SR 408 I-24 - SR 409 I-185 - SR 411 I-675 - SR 413 I-520 - SR 415 I-575 - SR 417 I-985 - SR 419 I-516 - SR 421

I drove the Southfield Freeway 20+ times during my week long stay in Dearborn, back in 2009. I would have enjoyed it more, but at the time, the freeway was a complete minefield of potholes and at times, there were sections where it was the equivalent of driving over speed humps...but at freeway speeds, oyy! I really liked that interchange too at I-96...it is not graceful or beautiful at all like some of the flyovers in California, but is rather ugly and gritty, somewhat fitting for the industrial, gritty reputation of Detroit...still interesting. Cool vid.
@AsphaltPlanet13 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comment. Yeah, one definitely couldn’t describe the M-39/I-96 interchange as elegant, but it sort of fits with the image of the rust belt for a city with an industrial history such as Detroit. I think Detroit’s freeways are generally now in much better condition than they were in 2009. There are still a few highways that resemble staircases intermixed here and there however.

M39 and I94 have some pretty aggressive on ramps and no one goes 55 mph. To be fair going from 70 mph to 55 mph is pretty aggressive.

The only Michigan freeway with Oreo cookie lines is M-39 in-between 7 and 6 mile. I wish it was used state wide.

Michigan is one of the few jurisdictions that still use thin line stripes as well.

@@AsphaltPlanet1 ya I just wished we used Oreo cookie on concrete road surfaces instead on the one Quarter black and 3 quarter white line strip.

Personally I think Oreo markings will probably become the standard, though I’ve always kind of liked Michigan’s contrasting lane markings in its concrete highways.

@@AsphaltPlanet1 I do to. I’m also ok with the half black half white. But your right I also like Michigan’s version of the contrasting lines.
@jonathanselevators3 жыл бұрын
@@AsphaltPlanet1 there’s also two to three types of Oreo cookie, thin like MN and Wisconsin, Texas.Then you got the thick ones in Florida, Texas and California. Texas uses both kinds, plus a super thick one, but mostly the Oreo cookie line that’s similar to Florida and California. Georgia uses a medium type of Oreo cookie.

Great drive on Detroit's freeways again. Detroit sure have a solid freeway system and it's always managable which outclasses other US cities. I'm pretty sure it's because of the shrinking population which Detroit have some issues. No offense, but it's true.

That sucks. I was once with a couple of friends when my car broke down on the Lodge Freeway in Detroit. People kept walking by us while we waited for a tow truck because they wanted to break into the car. Not my favourite life experience.
