I am a Gooner, so you may spot some bias. I'd like Ramsdale in goal because of his passing, but to be fair Pickford hasn't put a foot wrong so stick with him. Attacking starts from the back- and no-one is worried about Maguire in that respect. Bring in Ben White, accelerates with the ball and a great passer- opposing sides would have to close him down leaving more space in midfield. Play TAA on the right. Or Ben White on the right as he knows Saka's runs and can drop to make a back 3 if Shaw is in the attacking 3rd. That would then give Rice and Bellingham space. Saka, Kane and Sterling were anonymous because of no support plus no space, so Foden in to give that either side instead of Mount, and maybe Grealish, with Saka and Kane up front. You've then got 3 bona fide finishers with 2 that chip in. Let the wing backs overlap, Bellingham and Rice have the discipline to cover them. Basically if Foden or Grealish get the ball within 5 yards of the penalty box defenders will panic. In football you don't pick the team you like, you pick the team that disrupts the oppositions plan and that they will hate.

I know Maguire did well but the reason for that was because we rarely left our half and Harry had all the support in the world. It's a strange thing but when the team does bad, he does good (for the wrong reasons) and when the team plays well pressing high and aggressive, he does bad.

Cap. Maguire is the defender that plays as a wall. So mostly he tries to win aerial attacks and sometimes slide tackles but near the goalkeeper . It's just that if he missed the tackle everyone is like " OOh mY gOd HaRRy maGuIrRe SuCkS"

With five subs the manager should have a 3 man bomb squad that comes on at 60 minutes that can change the tempo and the intensity. For england that should mean putting a new front three on to terrorize the tiring backline. We have the players for it!!! Like most of the squad, he plays for a club that centres on possession based total football philosophy. Southgateball is more defensive minded in nature, more negative and less creative. A player like foden can't shine in a team that lacks the technicality, confidence and most importantly chemistry to deliver a proper ball to him. Doesn't help that he's very small either, so not much of a target man

You can't expect foden, kane or even raheem to do much when you have the likes of trippier, shaw and mount playmaking for them. I support chelsea, so trust me. Agree completely with your take, Goldbridge. Outside of playing the USA, I watch England. I feel bad for those on the bench that could have completely changed the pace and outcome to the game. England has too much talent to be playing counterattack tactics when they should be on the front foot. I thought Southgate said the shackles were coming off only to put the boys in concrete shoes

Southgate and Gregg Berhalter are kind of similar in terms of favoritism and tactical inflexibility, but Gregg going 4-4-2 with McKennie on the wing (where he has played quite a bit for Juve) was really smart. Still hope we move on from him after the World Cup, but he out-coached Southgate today.

Southgate was playing for a draw. It was obvious the entire game. England players passing it lazily betweenthe back line, not contesting for set pieces (aside from Harry maguire...), playing sloppy passes in midfield and inviting pressure on themselves whilst laying off the US when they were in possession. These players know how to play possession-based, progressive football. Gareth Southgate doesn't know how to play that type of football, so he goes with whatever is "safe".

This is the problem with Southgate, when plan A does not work he doesn't have the tactical nous to change things. A top class manager could see it wasn't working and change it up. These games are just the same as the Italy and Croatia type games, showing Southgate as an inept manager who doesn't have the tactical knowledge to change a game at all. He has been carried on a semi final we had the easiest run to get to that no one gave us a hope and a final in our own country with another easy run to only beat a very poor Germany side. The players have been the ones carrying the results. The guy is great at what he has created in terms of spirit etc but that didn't need to be a managerial role! Saka, Sterling were good last game but terrible in this one, they both needed changing. Mount has been like a headless chicken in both games and you need a Foden/Maddison type player in that role that has a brain. Trippier has created nothing and has been very negative. Shaw has been let down with Sterling in front of him. Stones passes the ball too slowly and we are always going sideways, ruining the ability we actually have on the ball through the middle. For me if you can't change a team to create more chances when you now have 5....yes 5 subs and choose not to play them all in this heat....you are a complete and utter fool. I'm sorry but the FA have cost English talent for over 20 years now with managers who just aren't good enough tactically or just don't care enough because they aren't English!
