In this video I have a look at a 2005 Lincoln Town Car that was dropped off with a complaint of overheating. The lady told me it started running hot when she was pulling a long hill. After letting the car sit for a while she was able to drive it to my shop. Sounds like a fan issue to me. Let's find out. -Enjoy!

One of tricks we did at the phone company on taping up wires is to start with the sticky side out and on the second pass we would flip to sticky side down. The the tape would two things, hold together tighter and if you had to remove it just cut it would peal off leaving no sticky black adhesive. Great video and fast troubleshooting.

My only real concern with it is two fold. 1 rust on suspension components. 2 Valve cover leak. 1 a minor repair, the 1st one could be the death of the car.

500k+ on this Ex L of mine. Used for limo service and Uber since 2007. Still runs and looks good but, that wiring issue is chronic with Town Cars. The fan plug burns and causes the failure. I just ordered a new plug from Parts Geek. In the meantime I ripped the guts out of the control module and fashioned a manual switch to control the fan.

The last of the simple to fix, reliable, American V8 sedans. I have one, I restored it as a hobby, and I love it. Parts are everywhere and cheap (the driver's door control module is a pain in the a$$, though). It's a joy to cruise the interstates with. Need a fuel pump/alternator/water pump....$100. Brake pads and rotors.....$250. The AC system is accessible under the hood....no tearing the dash out!!! The 4.6L 2 valve is stupid reliable, simple and cheap. Look at the access space in front of the engine. The fan connector didn't require removing the heads and dropping the fuel tank to gain access. My highest recommendation for car guys.

Always enjoy watching you fix stuff. One thing came to my mind on this one was what I call rule # 1,now!> If your are even just close to wiring ( as you were to fix it) Disconnect that battery! And I say this because once upon I time I DIDN'T!! and a power bar shorted out my horn relay,,and poof!! under dash fire!! wires, radio, heater, dash,,heater control,,headliner,,all gone,,would have burnt more if I hadn't fought the fire. Anywayyyy,, my car is now in a slow painful recovery and I learned to never skip my rule #1. Great informative vids ,thanks for your insights. Cheers

I did the same thing in the middle of nowhere up in the Northwest Territories right down to collecting water from a nearby ditch and filtering it through an old t-shirt. Love the fluid film shot on the crimp end of the connector. A more than perfect repair for a retail repair shop. I'm rather paranoid with any and all electrical connections. I keep my vehicles for life (their's or mine) and since I do the work, I can afford the time and effort to go overboard. No crimping... Every connector gets soldered. A dab of liquid insulation goes over the stripped wire boundary followed up by two sections of heat shrink tubing. The heat shrink provides the necessary insulation and stress relief.

We had a Hyundai Elantra, replaced the cabin AC fan switch so many times (yeah, we used those), that a different one had to be used on the last change. About the grease on the connectors...was reading the manuf. data sheets recently and noticed the recommendation to avoid using it on low tension connections such as the ones added to the Lincoln - they say only on larger clamped connections such as lugs to a panel, etc. For the push connectors, they suggest to just use it inside the plastic shrouds/connector shellto help seal it, and leave the metal bits clean. Thanks for another entertaining video...luv the sway bar test ;)

It's always interesting to me living in a no-rust part of the world how people in the UK and upstate New York define 'old'. Our cars don't rust or corrode, the average age of a car on the road here is nearly 20 years old - and why not? If we had mechanics like Eric out here, we'd still have Model T's running.

Nice job. I wonder if a previous mechanic missed this problem, and that's why it has a new fan. BTW, these cars often last 400-500k miles, so I betcha it has a LOT of life left in it.

Never put the window down because "up" might not work. Bad switch, bad connector, broken wire, motor turns one way but not the other, etc. Even with manual-crank windows - the regulator in my '65 Mustang broke a gear tooth, and still worked fine for "down" with gravity pulling on that big honkin' giant slab of glass, but "up" was another story - you had to physically lift the glass with one hand while cranking with the other.

Never use/adjust/touch what you aren’t getting paid to work on, because inevitably when it comes time to put it back the way it was it won’t work properly. The customer will swear on their momma’s life and a stack of Bibles it was working fine when they brought it in (even though it’s never worked since they owned the car) so YOU must have broken it! So you OWE it to them to fix it since it was fine before YOU touched it! Every. Stinkin’. Time.

Got the same problem on a 2003 Impala. The automatic fan control would not turn on the fans. Since this is a very high milage car customer did not want to spend much money. I hooked up a manual switch inside car to operate the fans. When temps climbed above normal he would just turn on the fans to cool it down. He is a very good customer and he is happy doing it this way instead of spending money on this old car.

I'm glad you felt the connectors while the fan was running to see if there was any heating due to a bad connection or the spades were to small for the current drawn :-) I'll never get to see your area so thanks for the ride. I had a 1990 turbo Loyale that had the right fan wired backwards so one sucked and the other blew causing over heating. I fixed that so they both sucked :-) It didn't over heat again. It's the only Subi I shouldn't have bought cause I didn't know any better then. All the rest were not turbo'd. Happy Father's day :-)

I have close to a million miles of driving the Lincoln TC they DO NOT glide over bumps. they HOP over bumps due to those stupid air bags in back only a Mercedes glides over or THREW the bumps

Are you sure the bags were not bad? You will know because the back end will be low to the ground. To each his own I guess.

@@jdtractorman7445 of course I know like I said I have close to a million miles of driving these things. they HOPED over bumps and really were not a good glide in the long run A Mercedes goes THROUGH the bumps. I had a 190E Mercedes that would put the Town Car to shame. Also a 1984 bmw csi that went through bumps like they were not there but for their size the TC cornered good. Its not a boat like most most drivers think though. save your pennies when the rear air bags blow out.

You spelled the word "hopped" wrong. You are comparing vehicles that are not really comparable to each other. I would never own one of those other models you mentioned, to expensive to buy and their replacement part cost is most likely through the roof.

Thanks bud, this gave me something else to look for...a corroded electrical fitting. My fan was intermittant...turns out it was the fitting on the pigtail coming off the fan. Can't get a new fitting, it plugs right into the fan control module. Have to buy a new fan! Not on my watch...I soldered 2 new 1/4" female connectors on the wires and plugged them straight up into the control module !!

The low coolant could be caused by the well-known intake manifold failure. I don't know how prevalent they are on 05's, but I had it fail on my 03 Crown Vic last year. One intake manifold replacement later (and a radiator flush for for reaching 130k miles), and no problems. Of course the blend door for the A/C is in need of replacement now.... ugh Good job sir! I see that repair lasting a very long time.

I'm guessing that you get negative comments about some of the non-standard, command decisions that you make. However, my humble opinion on that is, that's exactly why customers come to you, and keep coming back for life. They aren't just paying for your wrenching ability. They want, and need, your experience and common sense. Bravo, and thanks for another great video!
