I had a 07 pontiac torrent that was a nightmare we had no heat in the front vents so we had it inspected and they said just to replace the thermostat well it was more than that we did the thermostat the heater core changed the coolant also the water pump and still no heat and everytime on start up you could hear like water swooshing inside the engine. Well after we did all that I checked that coolant like a month after that and it was like gel so took it back to a mechanic and they said the engine head gasket was blown so we decided to replace it and everything worked for about a month then it happened again no heat in the front vents and the coolant turned to gel again! So I decided to junk that pos. I talked to a bunch of people that had the torrent and they all had the same problem no heat in the front vents and the coolant turned into gel and it was DeX cool alot of people say its sh!t coolant.

Brings back memories. My girlfriend and I were driving from Rochester to Buffalo in January when the thermostat decided to stick open after we got on the highway. By the time we got to Buffalo, were chilled to the bone, I mean it was ridiculous. First thermostat I ever changed. That was in a 86 Chevy Celebrity with a 2.8 MPFI V6, my first car. I'm surprised the ATS engine was so noisy. The 2.8L V6 was a pretty good engine. Not many problems, only the MAF went out at about 80k miles. Sold it at 120k and still going strong. The only weird thing with that engine was when you started it cold it did an idle hunt for about 2 minutes before evening out. For the life of me I could not ever figure out what was causing that.

So we have a 5 to 6 year old car with 58k miles on the clock and the radiator is bad and probably the thermostat as well. It will take 6 hours to make the repairs. Time includes lowering the bumper cover assembly to gain access to the radiator. The MSRP for entry level 2014 ATS was about $34, 000, fully loaded $50,00. Right now, a used 2014 ATS is in the 13 to $14, 000 range. So it makes sense to dump it, excuse me, "to offer it up for resale." Remember, back in the day, when you could replace a radiator and thermostat in much less than an hour. And that would include a trip to the parts store if you bought new, but the usual practice was "to send it out" for repair, much cheper than new, and of course it could actually be repaired!). Of course, there weren't many water cooled turbos back in the day, very few plastic parts and no plastic "beauty treatments to remove - you seldom were replacing radiators at 58K miles. "I didn't build it. I didn't buy it. I didn't break it" - words for a mechanic to live by. Of course, in the name of good customer relations, you have to figure out a nice way to say that to your customers.

It was interesting to follow your diagnosis for this vehicle. Unfortunate the radiator is leaking. Not a quick change for that on a Cadallac.

A radiator core going bad on a car that age is pathetic. Bad GM.

If the coolant is 5 years old, it should have been changed at 3 years. Coolant, even Long Life coolant, becomes acidic over time and will eat thru your rad. Change coolant at least every 3 years.

A lot of the time it is the manufactures choice of venders and those are the parts that make the car or truck unreliable.

@@galexander9857 Excuses, excuses.. Typical American car / Eurocar excuses.. "Yeah, no problem with the car.. It's the owner! Should have fixed or repaired errr maintained it more!!!" And yet, with superior cars, like say, a Lexus, one does not need to entrench themselves in endless repairs, or more needlessly frequent maintenance. Also, long life coolant SHOULD be 5 years.. So this car should've been due for fresh coolant, NOT a new rad.. Alas, it's GM garbage.

Sounds like the rod knock went away after you filled up the cooling system also!

Eric honestly have her or you, put 4-6 GM coolant seal tabs in there and fill up the coolant and run it. It will seal up and be good for a while. GM approved.

Love the test drives and seeing the country side back home. Hopefully get a chance to get back there and visit my old man around deer season. Our hunting grounds are about 5 mi away from you and I am pretty stoked about possibly getting out there and freezing my !@# off again. ;-) Great video and caddies are now definitely off my retirement car list!

Yes, she could have been out Eric's door for about $1,400 or so yet chooses to spend more than that just in sales tax on another vehicle. Not to mention, higher priced license tags. LOL

My neighbor has asked me why I always have the hoods up on my family's cars every Saturday. I check and adjust all the fluids as well check the condition of the belts and hoses. I also check all the lights and tire pressures as well as the wipers. A few minutes checking essentials and a few hundred dollars a year on maintenance and your car can easily last hundreds of thousands of miles and be reliable. I have a Saturn LW300 that I bought new in 2001 and although it is now a semi-retired dog taxi but over the years it has accumulated 395 K miles. Maintenance by the book has resulted in excellent reliability on this car as well as several other supposedly unreliable GM vehicles.

Who knows. That engine might be damaged from running low on coolant for a very long time. That trail of coolant and dirt down the front of the radiator supports that observation. Heck, he put at least a gallon and a half in it. Owner wasn't too concerned about no heat until cold weather hit. Could have driven it all summer with low coolant. Yeah, she may want to move on to a new car instead of throwing a bunch o' bucks at this one.

@@williamegler8771 same! A lot of people my age don't know squat about cars. I just do it myself, check and change all fluids, and maintenance. Saves me money and also have a Saturn, like you! Granted it's not the best (Ion 2) but runs like a top because I keep my eye on everything.

I hear your pain on getting GM parts while the UAW strike is ongoing. I keep two GM's, a car and a truck. A normally $120 part I needed for the truck was over $542 overnight within 48hrs. of strike starting. Shipping would take over 10 days as the Teamsters union is striking in solidarity with the GM crew and GM production shutdown has dried up stock & parts. I went with a quality American remanufactured part though I really do prefer to keep my GM's all GM. On the other hand, for a Cadillac, that machine sounded so raunchy. Seriously, a 4 cylinder Caddy that vibrates and shimmied like a Russian Lada with cement filled wheels? It sounded way too rough and unrefined to have ever left the factory floor. ^.^
