I worked out of a shop that was not licensed for five years. What kept us going was we charged the customer what the part cost us and we never charged over $40 an hour to repair. We were never out of work and we never had any complaints against us, and we fixed any screw-ups on our dime. The man who ran the place had to retire due to health reasons and we all went our separate ways, but to this day I still help my friends and neighbors by telling them what is wrong and how to fix it themselves. Kudos to you sir!

@grozbeek mose the shop always made money, everyone was always payed on time and we always got bonuses every year. We always had cars waiting and we always made sure that they were satisfied. Plus you would not believe how just the word of mouth kept us busy. As far as making money it was never about getting rich, it was about helping people who couldn't pay a dealer to fix their vehicles.

You know you're in excellent hands when the mechanic puts never seize on the catalytic converter studs and uses a removal clamp on the rear for ease of accessibility later. I hate aftermarket parts but in this case it was the most viable option considering the high cost of OEM. I couldn't get this kinda of service from anyone in my area. No way no how. If I could buy equity stock in SMA, I'd spend every last dime I could liquidate to get in on the ground floor. Eric O's business is takin off fast! Great video.

Not actually. Eric's always been busy and he's not any more or less busy than he ever was. Living in a rural area, well to me where Eric lives isn't a rural area it's actually the Outback, he will never truly profit due to either his obvious skill or honesty. His labor rate is $70 an hour which is unheard of here in Phoenix and about half of what any dealership here would charge. Eric in Phoenix would be fast on his way to becoming a millionaire as people would happily pay for his competence and honesty. In Avoca, not so much. Think about it. In damn near every video some car that somebody screwed up (either the owner or a lousy shop) comes to Eric to bale them out. WHY? If I had a guy like Eric around and something happened to my car I wouldn't even consider taking it to somebody else yet his own neighbors seem to do it all the time. Christ had it right: "NO MAN IS A PROFIT IN HIS OWN LAND."

SATAMAN Schmidt what are u talking about? Do you watch his live streams? Do you listen to him speak to the people? He is often telling the tale of how he is getting busier and busier. Sometimes(before Josh and Hannah came back) he would be booked out almost a month. How do I know? Because I want to bring my car to him to work on since incompetence seems to reign king everywhere. Also, with his popularity growing on KZbin, sponsors are now starting to take an active look at him as a viable creator. Remember the $10,000+ turn down from Exxon-Mobil so he wouldn't be perceived as a sellout like ETCG? I do because I pay attention and care. Astro, to name another, is constantly bring out new more innovative updates to their products because of Eric O. Companies don't do that if he is just "average" or mediocre. The writing in on the wall in front of you if you just STOP and take time to see it. Phoenix or NYC, isn't going to make him anymore viable. His appeal is in being the HONEST hometown mechanic that does stellar work at a fair price. Give it a couple more years and then we'll really see how this channel is flying high. And I'll be one of the few that got in at the bottom level(3 plus years ago) and laughing all the way to the bank!

You might say that I have inside information. Three years ago Eric invited me up to Avoca and I stayed at his home for a week. The reason for the invite was to discuss his purchasing methods because at that time Advance Auto was charging him more for parts than people coming in off the street were paying. I convinced him to start buying his parts from Rock Auto and Amazon and to get an Amazon Prime membership. The reason that I made this recommendation, and the only way this could work, was that Eric was booked out two to three weeks in advance back then. He had more than enough of time to look a car over, determine what parts it needed and then order the parts from either Rock or Amazon an half the cost of what Advance Auto was charging him. I set him up with Microsoft Office and we even set up a comparison spreadsheet showing what the part would cost from Advance vs. Rock or Amazon. This finally got Advance to give him decent pricing as they were losing $5K a month to Rock and Amazon from SMA one of their bigger customers in the metropolis known as Avoca, NY. This is how he got all of the Rock Auto magnetic stickers you see on his cabinet. With respect to Astro I set that up. I'm friends with the owner of Astro Pneumatic, Steve Fisher, and his product manager Chris Pettit. I told them about this guy in New York who had what I considered to be a vastly superior KZbin automotive channel named Eric and that Chris should contact him to use as a tester for any of their new tools since, as I distinctly remember telling Chris: "this guy could break an anvil." I personally either gave, or sold to him at my cost, all of the TOPTUL tools Eric uses in case you've ever wondered where they came from. My comment was exclusively about $$$$$. If Eric would live in a major city, or for that matter if he was willing to fly, he could triple his income. I've been trying to get him out to SEMA for four years where I guarantee you multiple companies would be willing to shell out serious cash to have Eric in their booths. There is no doubt that being in Avoca is holding Eric back in this regard. Avoca is a charming little town, but, it's not where the action is. Don't believe me? Ask Keith DeFazio, the man who knows more about diagnosing cars than any other breathing human being that I know of.

As a certified master welder, I see nothing wrong with your welds, actually they're quite good! You didn't do anything different from what we all do from time to time, ie. striking off a little extra run-out on the edge of our work....yeah we're supposed to cut the wire with our nippers, which are usually just out of reach. Proud of you, brother!

@@mrtrizzae I had an 87 Ranger that really did need a computer. Turned out, the windshield had a minor leak, and where did it leak onto? The computer and had it all corroded. I put sooooo much money into that Ranger. (I bought it used). I traded it in on my Hyundai Elantra wagon in 1999, and am still driving that. In fact, I just replaced the ENTIRE exhaust on it, including the cat and O2 sensors. 200,000+ miles, and still runs like a bear. Now, to get it away from the SALTY NORTH.

Still catching up on some of the older videos . Great job and the only thing I would like to have heard was the engine revving in neutral after the converter change since the bogging was part of the reason for your diagnosis. Hearing the difference might have made it more clear why your experience told you what it was. Too bad someone with less knowledge caused the purchase of unneeded parts, but sometimes you have to learn the hard way of whom you can trust. Good welding,thoughtful in replacing the fused used to replace blown one, adding anti-seize to studs and saving customer money by using a less expensive converter. Good work repairing the alignment blocks which were installed incorrectly. I enjoyed the professional way you located and corrected the various issues with this car. You know, many yrs. ago my Dad was a mechanic in his own "service station". I grew up in that station & learned a lot about cars. I've owned 2 stations and had mechanics work for me. OMG ! Do viewers really post comments such as "You welded that incorrectly"?!? You are a marvelous, superior, experienced, master mechanic. Your father, your brother, and you all make your living fixing automobiles. Of course you are not a master welder. It should be obvious that all you are doing is making a high-temperature, permanent air-pressure seal. The *worst* that will happen if your weld fails, is that the car will start to make a loud noise. Now a tragedy.

Dang, I missed the clip where you expand the pipe, I've never seen that done. You've got good welding skills for a guy who does it part time, I knew the welds would be fine based on the frying bacon sound of a properly adjusted machine. When I was a kid I'd weld without gloves all the time. Only later did I learn how the UV rays can cause skin cancer. This is a job that would be nasty to do on jack stands. Great video, there aren't many of these on KZbin.

Nice fix, keeping the owner in mind as well as yourself. Keeps 'em coming back! Missed making comment on the first installment of this saga, so here goes: Appreciated the mental process of your diagnosis, instead of throwing it on a parade of electronic devices you resorted to recognizing the general areas of concern and looking for the possible "why" of the problem, eventually finding the blown fuse and next, the short causing it, followed by fixing that client screw up and then rechecking the sensors and confirming a suspected problem needing attention, later. Again, resisting the opportunity to beat up on the customer, who was probably skinned by his first choice of mechanic! Customer service is too easily provided to ignore! Keeps 'em coming back and is the cheapest advertising in town!

To bring in a vehicle that has been fooled around by someone that has no idea what they are doing.....that does not run, start, light up...nothin'...and diagnose the problem and fix it.... Well done. Trying to figure out what some goof has screwed up is not easy. Your repair was very well done!

I work as a service writer (mechanic’s secretary) at a Honda dealer. We’ve seen more that a few cars come in with aftermarket cats as the Honda units are outrageously priced. They are always botched and hacked together with poor tack welds, wrong sized adapters poorly squeezed together with dodgy clamps. It gives me renewed hope for humanity to see the time you took to properly diagnose the problem step by step. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve talked to customers who had their car to a shop that after throwing a random assortment of parts at it concluded “bad computer” . In my limited experience, that is almost never the problem. I will admit that part of the problem lies with customers who have no understanding of what it takes to properly diagnose a problem and can’t fathom why they should pay for your time to do so. The car should just work and the attitude is often it is more your fault than theirs that it doesn’t. The care you invested in installing the cat. Was impressive Great job. Welds looked good to me. I think Mustie 1 would approve.

Mechanics like you are a treasure. Someone commented that they would stop working on their car if they had a mechanic like you. I totally agree, even though I can and have done maintenance, major and minor repairs to my vehicles most of my life, in my 67 years of life I have personally only come across 1 mechanic that I would say that about. Went to him for several years and he could fix about anything (not computer related),did it right and at a very fair cost. He would even do minor fixes and diagnostics for free if they didn’t take more than about 15/20 minutes. Sadly, a few years after moving away, I learned that he took his own life when his wife left him. Kudos to you for being one of those mechanics!
