It seems like wheel bearings don't last much over 100K on lots of cars. I can't get more than 100K out of GM cars. Heck, some don't make it 50K.

Nice - in Canada I have never seen never seize in a spray can. We use salt on the roads up here but we pay our salt drivers by the hour, looks like NY pays its drivers by the ton. Wow.

Hahah I know right! If you don't wreck in the snow you will wipe out in the salt pile lol. Its a product called muscle grease. www.castlepackspower.com/index.cfm?Page=Castle+Muscle+Grease . It has anti-seize properties so that is why I use it. Love the stuff along with a product called Fluid Film. www.fluid-film.com/ Plus who wants to touch never seize if we don't have to. You get one drop of that crap on you next thing you know its on your face in your hair all over your tools etc etc...

I have to replace the same hub on my 2011. On a different note with a two post hoist where to do you lift a T&C? On old cars and trucks with a true frame as the lift point I never worry. New cars and this van seems to have no place that looks sturdy. Thanks and great video!!

Should have a built in lift point on the frame up front. Looks like a body mount almost. Just behind the front tries. Rear usually you can put the lift arm on the molded in frame rail you see.

Fantastic video as always. Whenever I need to know what to do with our Dodge I look to your channel. Great tip on refinishing the bearing pad contact surface. I ended up using a very course wire wheel on a 4 inch grinder to take off the loose rust and a belt sander to keep the face flat. Prior to reassemble I heated the plate up and shot it with a coat of cold galvanize to cure it fast. Thanks again.

Your thought please, My van has 158 thousand on it.

You sound like a "sincya" , as in "since you replaced my air filter, my brake lights don't work, you need to fix them" , type of customer. Your brakes were fine for 8,000 miles, but they did something wrong? Make sure you explain that carefully to the next garage you take your vehicle to.

This video emphatically answers our colleagues outside the Rust Belt, about why Eric is always hammering on things. They leave comments about how he should not be hitting the front bearing, or ball joint, or whatever. But in this case there is *no* part pressed into another. That old part is clinging to a *flat* steel surface, _really_ hard by rust alone.

Thanks for sharing this video! I am not going to attempt to change mine, but your video gives me an understanding of what needs to be done on my 2004 minivan. The mechanic said the noise isn't coming from the muffler but rather the rear end right bearing. He quoted me $386. I researched online for mechanics near me and his estimate seems to be reasonable.

when the bearing is pretty bad, some says that its dangerous to loose the wheel? is that true?
@greanstreak04
@greanstreak04 5 жыл бұрын
Normally the hub will turn sideways when the bearing fails, causing a loss of traction, steering and brakes before the hub breaks off with the wheel. If you hear a humming, growling, grinding noise, get it fixed before it causes an accident.

I hate when youtube mechanics cut through a part of the repair and you get to that part and go...wth.... That's exactly what happened to me. I was to the part of replacing the abs wire and this video just cuts through the tin shield dealy. For those of you who get to that part (only on the rear passenger side bearing) There are multiple shields on the car, the shield that is pinning the cable to the body is the last/most rearmost shield. It's held on by two 8mm connectors (my 5/16th fit slightly better). You'll probably need an extension to reach the front connector. Take these two connectors off and the shield can be moved downward enough to put the new abs cable in, exactly how the old one was. Hope this helps and god bless.

Emt Scythe one of the guys that works with my father has a nifty tool specifically for wheel bearings. has a handle, solid steel with female threads on one end. has several lengths of extensions, and different size threads for multiple vehicles. thread one end into the unit bearing, and the other end into the handle and just beat the piss out of it with a hammer. used it on his 05 powerwagon and my 98 ram. worked great both times. not sure who makes it, but deffinatly worth the investment

If the old hub is frozen in the knuckle take a BFH & drive out 2 of the old wheel studs. Remove the 3ea 10mm bolts & the dust shield on. Buy 2ea 4" X 1/2" hex bolts (full thread). Stick them through the 2 lug nut stud holes placing 2ea 1/2" hex nuts on the back side of the hub, screw the 2ea 1/2" bolts in pressing the tips of the bolts against the steering knuckle (NOT THE EDGE OF THE WHEEL HUB). This should serve to "press" out the old hub from the steering knuckle. The long bolt & nut method along with a BFH worked on my Indiana driven 09' T & C with 130k on the clock.

More than once, some tidbit you mention has helped. I’m in Ontario, Canada, so fully understand rust. Love all your rust related comments!! Something I started doing for hub removals is an old pipe wrench hooked around the hub face. Works just like the fancy tools on Amazon. Usually a couple “taps” with a mallet and you break that rust. After that, you’re home free!

why is it MY 2006 caravan has Leaf springs on the rear, and not one video shows this setup or the differences in the brake caliper fasteners? My back plate is totally trashed, and bent to hell, I find bolts but not as you describe. I don't want to remove the entire hub, I just want to repair my brakes. Idiot kid put a Ford spare on a Dodge just because it has five lugs and looked like it fit. When he put the original wheel back on it, he did not have the tools to remove the tire so he burned it off... and detempered the rim. Wheel went awol while rolling...

Great video. Thanks. I just changed the left rear on my wife's 2010 Grand Caravan. When I put the new hub in it seems like it should have been tighter inside the knuckle. Looked the same in your video so I assume it is not supposed to be tight and that the four bolts actually support the weight? Seems odd though that those four smallish bolts would be enough so I'm a little nervous.
