Chevrolet Express Van: No Low Beam Headlights - Part II

In a previous video • Chevrolet Express Van:... I started to have a look at a Chevy Express van that came in with no low beams. A few checks of the systems we narrowed it down pretty quick. Not the relay, fuse, bulbs, switch or the BCM. It has to be corrosion or a broken wire. Now it's time to hunt. -Enjoy!

Shout out to Mrs. O for getting Mr. O out of the shop and back to the house for some rest and family time. We men sometimes tend to get way to involved with our projects and work. That is why it is good to have a woman around who loves you and takes care of you. I guess that is one of the many reasons married men live longer than single men. My wife died 4 years ago and I have noticed a real down turn in my quality of life. Anyhow, again good work Mrs. O.

Thats the perks of working at the chevy dealership, it was an essential tool years ago for terminals, we have a bunch of them, most of them have gone away and are replaced by terminals with leads. (because some techs couldn't crimp a terminal!) I save harnesses in a box so if i need a connector or terminated lead i just need to dig through and find it. That terminal for that connector is extremly common. Thanks for another good video on showing the thought process, I mainly watch your videos for entertainment, but i have learned a lot from you to be better at my job. I'm GM world class now and i still think you have more knowlege than me, if you were able to take the assesments that made me world class, you would pass them with flying colors.

I was a mechanic for 35 years and an automotive instructor for 18. I can verify that Eric's electrical abilities are probably as good as or better than mine. His parting words of "follow a process" are sooo true! I once spent over 4 hours diagnosing a no start Toyota. Finally decided it needs a PCM. Before ordering a new PCM (because I really didn't think that was the problem) I made a last ditch effort by putting gas in the tank. It started right up!! Gas Gage said 1/2 full. I used that story to emphasize to my students that you "Follow The Process!". Also humbled me, cuz I guess I do NOT know everything.

I've been an Electrical Engineer for 42 years. I am always impressed by Eric's way of troubleshooting. What do you expect? Who controls the hot side? Who controls the ground side? What is in-between? Same goes for mechanical problems.... timing issues. Gets out the scope, and measures the firing of each cylinder. Compares the crank timing with the cam timing... hey, lookie here... The cam is off by 2.15 degrees.... that timing belt is stretched. Better yet, "That timing belt isn't OEM. There's your problem Lady.", remember that one, Eric? So, I'm not a mechanic, but I use the near identical troubleshooting techniques. (In the troubleshooting world, it is called "collapsing troubleshooting steps). Once you know something, your brain collapses that step, so you no longer have to go that way. Really very SMART way of troubleshooting, because it saves time and gets you to the problem in a highly logical way. Great video(s), Eric O. Thanks for bringing us along!!

Awesome job as usual, glad to see another "Detective O on the case" video. I know other people like the brake job videos and I'm sure they're helpful for anyone doing their own job. They get on the ol Tube and search their year, make , model brake job and boom! There's SMA to guide the way! As just a general fan of watching YOU work, the brake job vids put me to sleep, but that's ok, I know you mention all the time, they bore you too! Love the diagnostic testing videos because you never know what the F you're going to find. That Chrysler minivan with the shorted communication wire under the folded down, far rear seats, that you just happened to lean on with your knee, while you had your scope hooked up to it and capture it! I mean DAMN, you're right when you said, "sometimes it's better to be lucky than good!" That stuff is my favorite. Anyway, thanks for all the great vids and free entertainment and knowledge. Way to keep your diagnostic process streamlined. Straight to the component to back probe. Work your way back until you can fill in the rest of the picture. Always look for the easiest way to access the next back probe location which will save time and eventually paint the picture with more information. This is the way I was taught from Nissan. Has not failed me yet. Another thing that may help people in the comment section with issues like this is when you get your diagram printed. Highlight where you have power and where you have grounds. I have found its easier to isolate your problem circuit when you can visually see what is right, by highlighting it on the paper and what is wrong will stick out to you for the visual learners. Awesome diagnostic Eric O you are doing a great thing for us who love to wrench.

My first real profession was working on TVs and other home entertainment electronics devices. This was back in the late 60 and 70s. Troubleshooting electrical and electronic equipment is an exercise in eliminating different components until you find the faulty components and or connections. Being good at troubleshooting is a skill that will help someone repair all kinds of equipment be it a TV, radio, home appliances, electrical wiring, toys, car, garage doors, and automotive electrical equipment. I have saved thousands of dollars because l was taught this process in electronic classes. You sir have the abilities I’m talking about. Using equipment and information available you methodologically find the cause of the problem. Many mechanics do not have your ability which is why you seem to get thrown the hard stuff. It must be a northern state thing but I am amazed at how many of the breakdowns and failed systems you find are caused by rust and corrosion. We just don’t see that very much down here in Southeast Texas. When you do find a crusty rusty vehicle here it was more than likely in a flood.

Great video. I got burned. No start crank problem on 2003 Toyota Camry. Used spark plug tester improperly. Didn’t had helper to crank the engine for me. I saw flashing. I thought it was good. Nope. I spent a lot of time to figure it out what the heck wrong with it. Checked all basic. All good. I went back to ignition system and checked and measured spark plugs. Indeed it was of spec. Put new spark plugs. It fired up. Crazy bizarre. I’m a backyard mechanic who’s still learning. Thank you for all you do.

i have an ‘06 express and lost the high beam on the left side . thanks to some tips i learned here i found the problem to be a corroded terminal on the headlight plug . ended up replacing the plug with one i got at pep boys . one tip if you have an express is to check for corrosion on the plug and clean the terminals and prongs on the headlight . the lamps will be dim if there is any corrosion .

I had a 97 Deville with a similar fault: no retained accessory power circuit. Same issue, nasty connection where the wire literally came off in my hand behind the fuse box. Same fix, I cleaned up the connector and soldered to it, slopped some dielectric grease on it when I put it back together. I had that car for at least 4-5 years after that fix, and it never had a problem again.

Being a trucker traveling to Michigan all the time I ran into a lot of green cankered wires. A mechanic in Michigan showed me a truck for cleaning green off wires. Spray a little starting fluid on them will clean them great then plaster with dielectric grease. That's if wire is green and not eaten off. Good in wiring connections to clean. Great vids keep going.

For a permanent fix, with the wire corroded right the hell off the back of the fuse box, I think I'd probably just cut that wire back to where it is clean, cut off the other wire where it leaves the fusebox, and connect the one to the other with an inline fuse. And leave a note for Future Me both inside the fusebox and in the owners manual.

@DaddyBeanDaddyBean

@@milantrcka121 where? I'm talking about bypassing the fusebox entirely - the wire coming in the back just fell out (so no power getting to the fuse), so I'm proposing taking that wire from the back, and the wire that SHOULD receive power from the fuse in the box but doesn't, and joining them outside the fusebox. Thus an inline fuse, taking the place of the one in the box that is no longer part of the circuit. What am I missing?
