@@jamespfitz Although some vehicles get sold directly to salvage yards, a very large portion of vehicles have to go through auction before they hit the recyclers/junk/salvage yards. Also, there are many, including every used car I purchase that doesn't go through an auction since I buy directly from individuals. A lot of people don't realize that Auctions are how insurance companies sell their totaled vehicles. You are correct that many very good vehicles go through auction, and I think Eric O was including that condition in his statement.

@Jim F As a retired dealer, I agree with you. Contrary to public opinion, we HATED selling junk cars. If we couldn't fix the issues and STILL tirn a profit, instead of trying to mask the damn things with a TEMPORARY fix, our mistakes went straight back to the auction. Sometimes we'd lose a few thousand dollars, but it was preferable to making a customer unhappy. Our main rule was to buy cars that were sold ONLY by a wholesaler. That means someone who NEVER retails. 99 percent of the time, our favorite wholesalers cherry picked tgeir stuff. We'd have to pay more for them, obviously, but we'd make it up in lower reconditioning expenses and down time. And, of course, a higher asking price. I absolutely loved buying good cars and servicing my clientele.

"What's the purpose of a hood?" In this case, it's to keep the engine from jumping out.
@wirenutt57
@wirenutt57 2 жыл бұрын
At least now GM makes engine mounts that won't let the engine literally jump out. In 1969, they got a batch of bad motor mounts, or possibly they changed the design, but when the driver's side motor mount broke, there was literally nothing to hold the engine from trying to flip over, and it bound the mechanical throttle linkage and made it stick open. Chevy's "fix" was to install a wire strap around the upper control arm mount to the exhaust manifold to keep the engine in place.

My first thought is that the “Off” is the scan tool not knowing what 4L is. The voltage is correct, so the switch looks like it is doing its thing. To prove it, I would disconnect the switch and inject 1.5V into the connector and see if the live data shows anything different.

@@Sicktrickintuner if it didn't have the current to drive the input, it wouldn't have the right voltage at the input.
@Vincent_Sullivan
@Vincent_Sullivan 2 жыл бұрын
@@Sicktrickintuner If it doesn't have the current it won't hit the correct voltage. It does have the correct voltage so it HAS to have the necessary current assuming the load end of the circuit is not disconnected. Since different voltages are used to signal to the transfer case computer the desired mode and all the different voltages are on the same wire to the transfer case computer and the transfer case works in all modes except 4-Lo I am inclined to think that the switch is OK and the control wiring between the switch and the transfer case control computer is OK. One question is WHERE is that voltage being measured and the scan tool does not tell you that. I am thinking the issue might be that the 4-Lo light/LED is burned out or has a bad connection back to the transfer case computer. If I was doing the diag on this I would try to determine if the transfer case is actually going into 4-Lo. Now that the front half shafts have been knocked back in take it out on the road and see if there is a difference in road speed VS engine RPM between 4-Hi and 4-Lo. If there is, then the transfer case is going into 4-LO and is probably OK and the lack of indication on the switch is a problem in the light circuit either in the transfer case control computer, the wiring, or the switch. Eric is damn good at this stuff but I think this may be a rare case where I think more tests are required and I sort of disagree with his diagnostic conclusions at this time. It will be interesting to see if part 2 has me eating crow on this!
@kenchilton
@kenchilton 2 жыл бұрын
Yes @widgy is correct. However, a bad ground on the receiving end could also cause odd problems like this, where the 1.5V looks good on the sender, but the receiver won’t see it properly without a good ground reference. My main point was not to trust the scan tool too fast, because “off” is not a possible position, and either means the scan tool really means 4L, but the programmer was lazy and used a cut-and-paste from a previous line and forgot to fix it, OR “off” means something very special, such as a mode from the TCM saying it cannot be commanded to 4L because _________. I would check the scan tool response as I noted, and if it still says “off” pull out my other scan tool and see what it says before replacing anything.

My first thought is the mode switch as well, unless the truck doesn't have 4 low, then you have the wrong switch. That TPMS relearner looks like a smart phone. You have a very lovely assistant and I love watching you repair cars. Wish I lived closer to you. I'd bring all my stuff to you to be fixed.

Lmao at the 247k - "Holy Shhhhugar!" That Crank Relearn is a pain and goes back as far as the 1996 Vortec days. You made that look easy. And it made a huge difference on the smoothness and performance on the Vortec engines.

I replaced the crank sensor on my 01 silhouette, and drove it for a year before having access to a scan tool to do the relearn. Never set a code.

I think the transfer case control module is detecting that the transfer case is not shifting into 4 low, so it's physically just shutting 4lo off. I would actually go down to the transfer case and physically apply voltage to the control motor, to see if it will actuate into 4 Low at all. I have seen that failure, and 2010 is new enough where it should detect High Resistance or other issues with the speed sensors and not allow it to go into 4 low, so the default would be off. That said, I would also pull the rear diff cover, and check the oil back there. If the front diff is shot, you can bet the rear diff is probably just about as bad. For reference, that should be the same axle that is in my 2002 Avalanche, or very similar, and that made it to about 250,000 before the pinion bearing committed suicide. My cargo vans 10-bolt made it to 350,000, and I have a new one rebuilt and ready to go in.
@Lugnut64052

Yeah, that's what I'd do; apply voltage directly to the motor and see if it'll shift.

At 10:55 you can hear something try to actuate when turning to 4L, so my guess is the switch is fine. I bet some actuator or other moving part isn't going into the correct position (or a position/limit switch has failed) and the control module isn't happy with what it's seeing.
@Sicktrickintuner

Yep, defiantly a possibility that the transfer case is shot too, piece if something broke inside and won’t allow it to mechanically move into 4L and satisfy the computer
