Our next series of videos explore the British seaside town of Southport in the metropolitan borough of Sefton, Merseyside. Geographically this sits on the west coast of the United Kingdom in the Irish Sea, south of the Ribble Estuary. 17 miles North of Liverpool and 15 miles South of Preston. A population of 95,000 as of 2021 census.
The most iconic part of Southport is the Pier, a pleasure land pier opened in 1960 and the oldest iron pier in England. With a current length of 1.1km, its the second longest in Britain after Southend on Sea, originally it was slightly longer at 1.3km but reduced due to successive storms and fires in 19th-20th century.
In 2000-2002 the pier underwent a significant restoration project, adding a tramway from the promenade to the pier head.
Further extreme weather in 2022 closed the pier once again and it was certified structurally unsafe from engineers accelerating issues with the piers decking. As of 2024 the pier is still closed and Sefton Council is further surveys have taken place to assess damage and devise costs for restoration.
