I visit Southport's jewel in the crown! The area called Churchtown is at the north end of Southport, full of victorian history, it also has many traditional english thatched cottages where the fist settlers of Southport lived and worked. I discover where the British obsession with the humble potato comes from and explore the amazing botanic gardens!
Churchtown is a suburb of Southport, Merseyside, England. Historically in Lancashire, it is surrounded by Crossens, High Park and Marshside in the ancient parish of North Meols on the northern fringe of what is now Southport.
In 1575, a shipwreck occurred off the Churchtown coast, the cargo of which contained potatoes, was washed ashore. Subsequently, the village became the first place in England where they were grown.
The Botanic Gardens was at one time the terminus for the Southport tram system, and evidence can be seen in the large turning circle at the front of the gardens. Stocks dating from 1741 can be found adjacent to the church wall on St. Cuthbert's Road close to Botanic Gardens. The centre of the old village retains much of its character from bygone ages - with the green in front of St Cuthbert's Church flanked by the two local pubs - the Bold Arms and the Hesketh Arms. This is covered by a preservation order which covers much of Botanic Road, where some thatched cottages still exist. On one side of the Hesketh Arms is the entrance to Meols Hall, home of the Hesketh family.
Southport is a seaside town in the Metropolitan Borough of Sefton in Merseyside, England. At the 2021 census, it had a population of 94,421, making it the eleventh most populous settlement in North West England.
Southport lies on the Irish Sea coast and is fringed to the north by the Ribble estuary. The town is 17 miles (27 km) north of Liverpool and 15 miles (24 km) southwest of Preston.
Southport is one of the nicest places in UK. It is quiet, peaceful and beautiful, from the seaside, marine lake, theme park, famous shopping aracades, sand dunes, forests, Victorian streets and much more, there is plenty to see and do. Festivals and events are running all year round such as the Jazz Festival, the Flower Show, the Air Show, the Golf Grand Open.

Me and my fiancé stayed there because we got an upgrade to the Peaky Blinders hotel. It was my birthday and walked to the Hesketh arms for my birthday meal. And to top off the perfect night, it started to snow. Always loved Churchtown since I was little

A nostalgic trip for me, I lived in Southport for 30 years and often visited the Botanic gardens. a shame about the museum, there was a time capsule in there, and a magnificent collection of elephant ornaments. I wonder what happened to them...
