One set of fans invaded the pitch to celebrate the win (as was common in those days) and the other set invaded the pitch to attack them. It's not hard to see where the blame lay. But of course the Scottish media and football authorities blamed what they called "old firm fans". I've been following Scottish football for 60+ years and I've yet to meet an old firm fan.

George McCluskey was also underrated but that was what professionalism in Scottish football was like then, McGarvey, McGrain and McCluskey would be millionaires now as would be the two late greats Burns and Cooper. Strange old days and strange to think McGarvey is a carpenter and McCluskey a taxi driver now, just nuts to think about and wouldnae hear that now.

Note the anti Celtic propaganda at 6:36 onwards from ITV / STV , where the camera is on loads of Celtic fans jumping up and down in party mode and joy at their team winning, while the biased commentator says ''look at these angry scenes on the terraces'' Wow, was it really hard for him to report what the cameras were actually showing. ''That Celtic fans were rightly celebrating with happiness and joy their team winning and that Rangers fans then rioted onto th pitch with rage, anger and jealousy as they were clearly bad losers , and hence the Rangers fans started the riot by attacking Celtic fans, to which Celtic fans responded back by trying to chase the Rangers fans back to their end. I was at that game, 17 years old, it was a nightmare , fans at the top of the terracing chucking bottles and cans full of piss down below at the police and hitting folk lower down. Nutters running onto the park, grown men from my town fighting each other. Then back to Glasgow Central avoiding the extreme violence, dodging bottles and fists, knives and boots. The last thing was a brick though the train window going though Johnstone. That was the last game I ever went to in Glasgow.

Celtic stitched player numbers on their shorts. The green fabric of the numbers would be almost invisible against the hoops. I think in the nineties, they put a white square on the back of the jersey so you could see their numbers. :)

This almost makes a good case for having any Old Firm cup final be at Ibrox or Parkhead, randomly drawn. Here the supporters are at equal strength and there is going to be a legitimate fight between two equal forces - at one of the clubs' stadia there would be an advantage and fights like this would be avoided.

Not dead mucker but as a Tim going through the motions watching utter fucking dross at the piggery your stadiums that empty they have to close the rear section. If you can't admit your teams pish and going backward instead of commenting on us you would come to the conclusion your mob Needs Rangers liewell admitted us being out the top division would not affect cellic then proceeds to give 30 million reasons why cellic need Rangers.I have never heard any talk from Rangers saying we miss cellic.Look at the evidence when cellic played barca you nearly got a draw in the nou camp then got a win at the piggery cellic created a new champions league stat record for the least amount of possession in a CL game over 2 games 30% but at the end of the day results matter. The next season barca took 6 of cellic and done them at the piggery signs of going backward starting to show cellic could not win a treble even though Rangers are fucking useless I can admit it you can't admit it that your teams shite. Now this seasons CL qualifiers hammered by legia warsaw 6-1 you get a second bite at it and cannot beat maribor in your 2 Europa league games cellic have been played of the park.Worry about your own mob mate because if you look at the league table where are cellic no where near the top and its on merit lol.We can only come through the divisions and were on schedule you will say hearts will win the first division that's fair enough cos I have a feeling were gonna be playing cellic in the play off for a place in the lol top league.Get your facts right the highest court in Scotland and Lord nimmo Smith said the name RANGERS is the same name used by the founders and is the same team club and stadium and the same colours with the 5 stars above the same crest. So if were dead why are we trying to remove these pricks holding our club to ransom to replace them with True blue Rangers men.Make your fucking mind up were Zombies(undead)or were dead or because the law is on our side regarding monies owed remember the big tax case we won HMRS appealed and lost again. So IMO get over it Rangers then Rangers now and Rangers forever.Watp

I'd just like to say that, even though I'm a Celtic fan, Davie Cooper is one of the best players I've ever seen and we could do with a lot more like him coming through the ranks of any Scottish football club. Incidentally, you're all (both sides) arguing for your own pathetic, political and religous stances. It may have counted years ago but it does not now. I love Celtic and I hate Rangers. But only for 90 minutes.

@saffibaffi Rubbish!!Get your history right. After this cup final, the next season celtic won the title back, and again the next season.80-81 and 81-82. In season 82-83 dundee utd won their only title before aberdeen won the league in the 83-84 and 84-85 seasons. Then celtic won it in 85-85 before Rangers, having spent almost a decade without a league title, spent millions on players, before going on to dominate the 90s. So get your facts right man.Celtic, aberdeen and utd were dominant in the 80s.

If you're Glasglow police with the Rangers your happy for now. With hte liquidation there won't be any Old Firm matches against each other for a while so the number of violent incidents will go down. Still it was a good 3 1/2 minutes before the mounted police came on. I mean this on top of the Bradford City fires, Heysel incident, and the Hillsborough disaster was a very dark time in football in the 1980's.

I think its total shite that when the "cavalry" arrived they did nothing to rangers fans but when celtic fans are on the charge then they start clubbing everyone in sight. hats off to Celtic though. they earned the cup.

So did Archie McPherson on the other side, when it came to philosiphing about morality and dubbed it Apocalypse Now. These days Archie tries to morally grandstand as an anti-Indy campaigner, frankly doesnae stand up. How does the moral grandstanding stack up now Archie? Eh? Come to ma door Archie and i'll gi ye a running comentary chasing yer arse oot ma garden. 😀😂😂

@gerip4 yes, im a celtic fan and im irish and a catholic too but that has nothing to do with football, i could easily be a rangers fan i have friends that are irish catholics and rangers fans who share the same political views as me, they are unrelated and i think that football and all sports should be a place where it is free from this, where people of different religions

Yeah! About 95% percent of it was, please don't be in denial. Clubs banned from Europe and Margaret Thatcher coined the phrase the 'English disease'. It spread into countries like the Netherlands, Belgium and other European countries that English hooligand exported it into on European ties. England fans caused trouble away in 1980, in 1985 at Hysel, in Italy again in 1990, attacked Scotland fans in 1996 and started shite in France 98. Even tried their bollocks when they travelled up for the Euro 2000 play off at Hampden til the Polis got them telt to get on the train and get tae fuck. Also pointing out, not these fans, but the Tartan Army jave always won awards for being friendly curteous fans.
