Rod Cameron always seemed to play second-fiddle to more significant Western actors like Randy Scott, Audie Murphy and Joel McCrea. Yet he starred in several entertaining films, some of which have recently been released from the vaults (cf. the Monogram Cowboys, vols. I and 2). SOUTHWEST PASSAGE is solid entertainment, with good photography and action, a fine supporting cast, and well worth viewing. Cameron made films for a number of companies. Several he did with Republic were once available on VHS--let's hope that some of them (e.g., BRIMSTONE, RIDE THE MAN DOWN, OH SUSANNA, SAN ANTONE, etc.) will be released soon on DVD. In the meantime, enjoy SOUTHWEST PASSAGE.

One of the good old films, where the leading lady, having spent 4 days in the saddle riding through dust, storms and the heat, still remembers to put fresh lipstick on for every scene. Wonderful.

Joanne Dru (1922-1996) was stunning! She was an American film and television actress, known for such films as Red River, She Wore a Yellow Ribbon, and All the King's Men. She was a NYC model at age 18. Her second husband was her co-star and love interest in this movie John Ireland - and Gregory Peck was the best man! Dru was the older sister of Peter Marshall, an actor and singer best known as the longtime original host of the popular American game show Hollywood Squares.

Rod Cameron was a solid B western star! I liked him in the western 'Ride the Man Down' with an all-star cast! Def. worth seeing! He started out in films as a stuntman. He guest starred in a bunch of popular TV shows like Perry Mason and Rockford Files after his film career ended. Wikipedia: Cameron starred in three syndicated television series: City Detective (1953-1955), State Trooper (1956-1959), and the Coronado 9 (1960-1961). Cameron's Western persona was popular enough that it attracted a comic book deal with Fawcett Publications.

I've learned this film was originally released in 3D. Also, it's being restored with recently discovered footage by the 3D Film Archive for future Blu-ray release.

The film is pretty good. As it moves west, it is pursued by Indians, runs out of water, looses a camel, a mule driver in the caravan insists that John give him half of the $20,000, a leading member is bitten by a poisonous animal and John, still disguised as a doctor, is unable to help him.

I didn't like those spaghetti westerns either. Too violent.

@@Elainerulesutube & no morals. It had been pointed out long ago in a 1968 book about the culture aspect of science-fiction by a Swedish author. Just in passing, in his description of the evolution in scifi literature, he mentioned « this mixture of sex and violence that’s the staple point of Italian westerns. » Sorry for forgetting both the title & the author’s name.

It is great that Rod Cameron westerns eventually are released. This one here is not one of the best though. It is a bit boring with too little action and Cameron himself seems a little bored. The credits go to John Ireland who is good as the on and of good and bad guy. The picture quality is not totally sharp but acceptable. I think I would have expected better from an MGM release.
