A cop who wants to be a smartass should then ask, "where were you born?" If the sov names any place on American soil, he's just proved that he is in fact a citizen.

I've said it many times before and I'll say it again: People become SovCits to protect their WRONGS and not their rights. Let's pretend that DimWit the SovCit DID buy this car from the person who stole the car. He's still 100% liable for purchasing stolen property. There's an old saying: "Let the Buyer Beware". If you're going to buy a car, you had better be sure its not stolen.
@jmr51255 ай бұрын
This is true, but... Even a reasonably paranoid purchaser of a car from a private seller can be caught like this. Even assuming you have a car inspected by your own mechanic I'm not sure if the mechanic would automatically check all the VINs to ensure that they match unless you specifically asked them to do so. And there is no guarantee that a private seller will allow an independent inspection prior to purchase in any case, although that is a red flag in and of itself. Regardless, it *is* correct that possession of stolen property is a crime. Otherwise the legal owner would have no way to recover possession of their property after a "clean hands" transaction. Buyer beware definitely applies here.
@nathangray51475 ай бұрын
@@jmr5125 At least in Kentucky All you have to do is call the county clerks office (DMV) with the VIN to confirm if it has been reported stolen.
@Cerakote1235 ай бұрын
I agree. Criminals also become SovCits to avoid their criminal behavior.
@jmr51255 ай бұрын
@nathangray5147 First, I suspect that "This is something that I need to do" simply wouldn't occur to most people, especially if a (apparently) legal title was presented. Secondly, a VIN lookup will only identify a car as stolen of you provide the correct VIN. As this video shows, thieves are clever enough to replace the more well known / accessible VINs with legitimate VINs. Few people would realize that just because one VIN is OK, you still need to look to see if other VINs match. To be clear, I'm not arguing that possession of stolen goods should be decriminalized, just that this is one of the easiest laws for an otherwise law abiding citizen to fall afoul of.
