@acac Slightly erroneous as actually the 100mm the D-10 (and BS-3) was adapted from the B-34 naval gun and 122 from a field gun. IS-1 was produced with a 85mm from the start and they were choosing between 100 and 122 for IS-2. Both showed comparable anti-tank efficiency with 100 having a higher rate of fire and 122 more powerful HE shell that was deemed more relevant for a heavy tank. The 100mm D-10 ended up in the tank destroyer SU-100.

With the mass production of guided artillery shells, large caliber howitzers will definitely see a renaissance. At $100k per shell, 100kg sounds a lot better than 45 kg. If scramjet artillery ends up being feasible, 203 mm would probably leave more space and weight for guidance systems and sub munitions.
@scatterlite22662 жыл бұрын
Currently reloading these large caliber guns is still quite a pain. A pion puts out 2 maybe 3 rounds a Minute whilst a state of the art 155mm spg can do 10 a minute, and also carry a lot more shells (8 vs 40-60) The range issue seems to get addressed by simply using obscenely long guns. The M1299 planned to enter US service has a 58cal gun for example. Id say well probably see 155mm remain standard for quite some time, just on increasingly advanced platforms.

It looks like a miniature Paris Gun. How come the Germans did not fire chemical shells from that gun during the WW1? The Pion looks a bit like the IS3 offspring too. Was it a counterpart to the US 175mm SPG? A great video.
@DeathHead13582 жыл бұрын
The shells from the Paris Gun had a very thick casing in order to withstand the immense pressure they were under during firing, and as a result had a very low filler capacity. The shells weighed in at 234 pounds, but only carried 15 pounds of explosive material. Not much value in making a gas shell, as the ability to hit Paris from behind the front was more than good enough for a psychological weapon. Plus, the whole deliberately targeting civilians with gas thing. I believe that the 2S7 used an entirely new chassis that was based on the T-72, the big giveaway of it being a more modern Soviet design is the rubber on the road wheels. All of the tanks of the IS family had regular steel roadwheels. It was most likely built to be a counter to the US M110 SPH, which carried the M115 203mm howitzer. It could have been a counter to the M107, which did carry the 175mm M113, but those in US service were all phased out or converted into M110s in the late 70s.
