The James Bond movie The Living Daylights partly takes place in Afghanistan during the war, with Mujahideen fighters as dodgy allies of the heroes and the opium trade playing a major role. It's quite interesting how it touches about the questionable ethics of western involvement for a movie that came out in 1987.

Hey, would you consider reacting to Feature History's "Fall of Yugoslavia"? It's quite a well done video. I feel like the topic is often overlooked, and it shouldn't be. Understanding what lead to the war could help us prevent another one (which seems more and more likely all the time).

@Mr. Terry History amazing video, I am in love with your reaction channel! I know that you are a Sabaton fan (yay!) and they cover a lesser-known battle of the war in their video Hill 3234 on the Last Stand album. The Soviet-Afghan War is definitely one of these less talked about wars that have a huge impact on global politics. As you have touched upon, there is the current War on Terror and the expansion of radicalized Islamic fighters into different conflicts. But further, you have the change in American political policies at the start of the war and its impacts on the current American political structure (Reagononmic, massive military spending and the move into "fight them not politic them" mentality); the Islamicization and civil wars of Central Asian following the dissolution of the Soviet Union (exacerbated by Russian and Stalinistic policies of using borders to form minorities out of majority ethnic groups) and other issues. Once again, great video and keep being a student of history!

This is a really important thing. Osama was a hero to many after the Soviet-Afghan war and heralded as such by his home country of Saudi Arabia. Later on Iraq invaded Kuwait threatening Saudi Arabia prompting them to request US aid. Osama went to the Saudi king and basically said they shouldn't let outsiders meddle in Saudi affairs and to let him and his fighters handle it. The country said no and continued pursuing US assistance. Osama seemed to turn that into the growing and intense hatred for the US which led to Al Qaida's sudden swell and threat to western ideals and the US.
@johnx41334 жыл бұрын
What no? Osama and most middle easterners were seen as a nuisance by Afghan Fighters. You need to remember these guys are rural and dont have many connections with the outside world. Afghans aren't too keen on foreigners. Also Bin Laden didnt do any fighting nor did he receive training. He was a businessman who was there to provide aid to groups he liked.
