Russians in Afghanistan were fighting with one hand tight behind their backs. Firstly, there was someone very generous who would give Taliban MANPADs, a bunch of land mines, millions of small arms with ammunition and facilitated the recruitment, arrival and training of hundreds of thousands of volunteers from all over the Middle East (that was how Bin Laden got there). Also, the insurgents had safe haven in Pakistan where Soviet troops, Air Force or Artillery under no circumstances were not allowed to fire at. Imagine if the US troops in Afghanistan were under the same constraints?

Neither the US or Soviet invasions were prosecuted with the purpose of total victory. Both were done at the behest of banking/corporate interests. Politicians are proxies for banking/corporate interests, when you understand this, offensive wars makes much more sense. Right now Russia vs Ukraine is a proxy war where real people's sons die for profit in moscow, london, nyc, etc.. At least in the old days kings used to fight and die in the battles, this is no longer the case.

Not even close. The US fought a very very different and largely successful war in and among Afghan population and won over large populations of the Afghansitan. Unfortunately, we lost the political will to keep up the waste for a people that large did not want to be free
@Doc_Egan5 ай бұрын
@brucemcdonald6677 We did fight it differently, and we focused on helping the people of Afghanistan. That is one of many reasons why we did not take as many casualties as the Russians(in my opinion, they didn't all hate us). We did not indiscriminately kill Afghanistans like the Russians. When I was in Afghanistan, it sure felt like we had won a lot of them over and had made a big difference there. At the end of the day, though, we lost the political will to fight. People in general don't understand that if you invade some place, you should plan to be there in some capacity for 60-70 years to ensure stability. We could have done that with a small force remaining in place. Unfortunately we ultimately fell victim to a lack of political will and the same patterns that were shown in the video. There were still going back and forth between Afghanistan and Pakistan all the time. A great saying is that we fought 20 one year wars in Afghanistan and we won 19 of them.

@@user-wf5gm8ld8w Yes the soviet army did have a better withdrawal than the Americans. They only had to cross a border. Donald Trump had a plan to withdraw from Afghanistan and then Joe Biden who replaced him to only screw things up. I personally blame the American Generals who should have known better. You know the US seems to be taking on the characteristics of the CCCP like how they lie to the people with propaganda few people believe or pretend to believe. America is a deeply corrupt country and Europe are little different. I don't understand why these elites are not content with Russians existing in the world. Bare in mind these Ukrainians are not fighting for their independence they are fighting for American corporations such as Black Rock and Monsanto to come and exploit them. I believe they will come to regret their partnership with the West. Just remember I do not believe in the Western propaganda. Having served in the U.S. Marine Corps during the Cold War I spoke with our Battalion XO who was a Major. A big flaw in the Red Army was that there was no professional NCO corps. Where we had SSGT thru SGTMAJ, the Soviets may promote a conscript to SGT but his obligation was still the original 2 years. While there were some senior NCO’s, most were drunks just waiting for a pension. Personal initiative was not allowed. In the U.S. military a PVT with a radio could request arty or air support if the situation dictates. In the USSR a major or higher was required to request support fire. So it may take several hours for the request to funnel its way to be approved. You saw this in Afghanistan when under fire and their officer is killed they huddled in groups not knowing what to do. Very sad but that is life in a communist country

Politics are infinite while the military, in any of its many forms, is expressly finite! The press is not a learning organization historians and people with genuine interest in the world's problems would do well to remember that. The dramatic, Walter Cronkite-style grandiose allusions at the beginning of this show play to this lack of learning, I'm not entirely convinced that the USSR "lost" Afghanistan any more than Russia has "lost" in any of its other incursions from Georgia to the Ukraine and every country in between. The USSR/Russia have not "lost" if for no other reason than any other potential "winner" has not defined what that "winning end-state" actually is. Wishing for things to return to "the status-quo" pre-invasion is the gold standard for Wishful, Wistful Thinking. The press, and many others besides, gleefully forgets that it was Ho Chi Minh who "won" in Vietnam (not the "Viet Minh or Viet Cong"). Most allusions the press makes, from the time of this program to now, between the two conflicts are ahistorical at best and more likely than not flagrantly wrong. The polyphonic nature of the American political electorate makes the agreement upon potentially decisive end-states fully endorsed by all relevant levels and branches of the government all but impossible. So, what if America worked with the Mujahedeen in the 80s? That fact does not prove whatever cynical, ahistorical, anti-government, anti-soldier argument either your "studies" professor from higher education or your Streaming Services Talk Show Host has taught you to make.

With India as a Soviet client state and enemy of Pakistan, I wonder if the USSR could have convinced India to invade from the south and the Soviets from the north? India was somewhat successful in a 1971 war which took East Pakistan away and created Bangladesh. Having been born in 1957, I cannot say how many times maps and globes had to be tossed because of changing borders.
@hellomoto20845 ай бұрын
Well as an indian i have myself thought it over. Let me say it was less than probable. Look at it this way , we invade pakistan, proper . Why should usa not intervene? That is one point also, you must consider the size of west Pakistan or just pakistan. I have seen at the maps of border , its a nightmare of canals, it will stop any invading army. Except Sindh province as it is a desert. And don't forget china . Nixon tried hard to chicoms to invade india across Himalayas, that's why we did what we did in month of December, when all mountain passes are closed in India's east that is Tibet and Himalayas. Wars dont happen in Himalayas in winter. Also do understand that your calling india an " soviet client state " is very misleading. Soviets never had a base here , pakistan has had american bases as it suited them. India categorically rejected Soviet military presence here ( due to non aligned movement) also we had trade relations with Europe and North America even during cold war. It was not like North Korea . Infact Soviets diassuded india to keep it's military operations in east Pakistan and not even attempt to land grab west , which we would not have done . Our grouse is over Kashmir and no other territory of pakistan. As for Bangladesh war , put india instead of Pakistan, put east Pakistanis refugees instead of Afghans and you will see why did what we did. It was refugee crisis larger than this one.
