"Caravan" is a Soviet song about the war in Afghanistan (1986). During the Afghan War, caravans of weapons and supplies for the Mujahideen came from Pakistan. One of the main tasks of the Soviet troops was to prevent such caravans from entering deep into Afghanistan. Such caravans were intercepted and often ambushed on the tip-off of informers. The thing about the soviets in the afghan war that drives me insane is how everyone lies saying the soviets lost in afghanistan. I give them their due they are tough and fight hard but the only reason they had any success against the soviets was billions of dollars worth of cutting edge anti air anti armor systems, weapons, satellite intel cia backing from the us covertly. If Russia had done the same to the US in afghanistan they would have lost hundreds of thousands of soldiers. Billions of dollars in helicopters, planes, tanks, ifvs and would have left alot sooner

The Soviets still managed to prop up a country that would outlive their support by three years and their own state by one. Meanwhile, with the Islamic Republic...

The Soviets lost the Afghan war for those reasons. But to say the Soviets lost because of military incompetence or unpopularity is incorrect. The Soviets lost because they couldn't afford it. The state the Soviet Union was in due to the economic policies of Gorbachev left not only the whole Union but the Red Army in a massive problem. There's also the language used. I've heard people say "The Soviet Invasion of Afghanistan" but that would be disingenuous to the Soviets and the Afghan government at the time, the Afghans asked the Soviets to handle the Mujahedeen. There was no invasion, rather, it was an intervention.
