@@user-pk2je1gb4b The Socialist Government in Afghanistan made some good reforms, but also made a lot of mistakes. Women were declared legally equal to men, less people were illiterate, selling of brides was made illegal as well as usury and farmers had their debts waived. However, the new government also ratified new land reforms that weren’t seemingly well thought out and put lots of farms in the hands of inexperienced workers, causing lack of food. In this highly religious country, the government promoted atheism, encouraging men to shave beards and women not to wear the burka. On top of this, the government was highly factionalized, leading to thousands of unjust arrests and executions by whichever faction was in power. Life for people in the cities was improved, as the government didn’t have much authority outside of the major capitals. Rural life remained relatively untouched, but many villages were mistreated and destroyed by the Soviets or looted by the Mujahideen. Compared to now, the situation has not improved. The government is stubborn, misogynistic and authoritarian, while its army is largely ineffective. Due to constant warfare since 1978, neither city or rural life has improved. Most of Afghanistan is without power and there is only 50km of paved road in the entire country. To answer you truthfully, I don’t know which time was better. I think they are about the same in misery, another sad chapter in Afghanistan’s history.

This is Pentagon's excuse, US call the shots there. They allowed the central Government to flee. Talibans back to power is another piece of the low intensity warfare against Russia and China (and Iran). China may have business there, but at then end, all these alliances and contracts are dictated by convenience. As soon as they can, Talibans and Pakistan will not hesitate to stir agitation in Xinjiang. Not only that, all ties between Talibans and US secret service remain unclear, CIA and others may make some big money with protection fees of future investments in the country.

If we did them better and they didn't have the taliban and ISIS who are so angry, Afghanistan would actually be a huge pride of the world They fought the world's single military super power and beat them down so badly the entire country collapsed, then as horrific as it is they set world records of casualties fighting the next super power before we finally settled the land. And we only settled the land because the people itself didn't ACTUALLY mind us to much and we gave a much better way of life after their civilization collapse back in the 70s

Which is absolutely not the case with Americans. Because apart from setting up a powerful drug trafficking and shooting civilians with drones, the Americans did nothing else. No! The difference is enormous! The Russians then did a lot of good for the people of Afghanistan and left the country in strict order with their heads held high and banners unfurled. No wonder even those Afghans who fought with the Soviets in the 80s now respectfully call Russians "Soviets" (šouravī:) and are honored them as worthy warriors and decent people. Which is absolutely not the case with Americans. The Americans shamefully fled Afghanistan, betraying and abandoning their allies. @HelenaRey

@@GlitchedBlox You have obvious problems with logic. in Afghanistan, the Soviets left behind a working infrastructure, industry and agriculture, medical and educational institutions, civil liberties for the Afghan people and a relatively stable political power. But the Soviets did not leave behind mountains of weapons that their enemies would receive on the same day... But the US did just that - in addition to religious obscurantism, the ruins of the economy, the political split in the country, the terrorist and drug threat to the whole world, it left its "enemies" weapons worth 85 billion dollars and fled. Where does such generosity come from?? Maybe it seemed to the US that the mess they left behind in Afghanistan will not enough? Maybe the US needs the Taliban for making an EVEN BIGGER MESS, but now not only in Afghanistan, but also in neighboring countries?!?! Therefore, one cannot compare the actions of the Soviets and the Americans in Afghanistan. The Soviets came there to build, but the USA came to destroy!

Now that my countries military is pulling out hopefully the killing will begin to stop. To bad that civilians are being left to the Taliban. Best wishes to them and respect to all the fallen soldiers who weren’t able to make it home

Do Americans have songs about their war in Afghanistan? After all, they were there longer than the USSR. Does the American military even have songs about the wars in which they participated? Vietnam? Iraq? (I'm not talking about the dozens of smaller conflicts where the Americans participated)

Americans have many songs about wars in vietnam. While in the Iran-Iraq War and Persian Gulf War to War in Iraq and Afghanistan, there is none i guess.
