My Uncle was drafted to Afghanistan in 1982 and he was in the 40th army in their tank dvision and from what I remembered he was a good man and had a good heart and was a vary caring and loving man, when he came back he had bad PTSD and survivors guilt because he lost his friends there and he was awared the Afghanistan campaign medal, i still have his tank helmet and his uniform and medal, he sadly hung himself after his girlfriend passed away from cancer..I was 4 years old when he committed suicide, I love you uncle I hope you found peace with yourself...

My uncle in law did several years near Herat in the latter half of the war as an artilleryman. Also made it back with bad PTSD - he had a bad flashback when he came to the US to visit the Grand Canyon decades later. While he was definitely abrasive during my childhood, the one constant - especially as I grew older - was his fear that the US would start conscripting people like me to head off there. USSR never invaded afghanistan. SOVIET UNION was Afghanistan's top ally. Russia helped us a lot in many sectors. Russia and USSR Republics were helping the then Government of Afghanistan punishing the same terrorists funded by America.

There are too many mistakes in Russian text. It's translation into English is very poor as well. For example 'В чем наша боль и наша слава' means 'What our pain and our glory are'. Here we have 'our pain and suffering'. Разведвзвод (разведывательный взвод, взвод разведки) means reconnaissance platoon and can hardly be translated as battalion.

История не знает другого, кроме как потом спрашивать с солдат, которых послали за тысячи километров от своего дома. Спрашивает история с упреком, с презрением и бесславием. Забудьте о свое браваде. Даже Великую Отечественную ветераны не хотят вспоминать, наоборот они хотят ее забыть, но она живет в них до конца жизни. А бравирующие "патриоты" пытаются напоминать и напоминать, дергая заросшие раны памяти воевавших стариков. При Сталине 20 лет никаких парадов и веселья не было, т.к. Сталин не был клоуном и показушником. Показуза началась с придурка Хрущева.
