JAZZZZZZZZ HAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAANDS!!!
I am considering a 'Tales from Aeroflot' series of irregular videos, kinda like the Russian Navy ones just because they are wild and I need some black comedy after the misery of my recent study.
Let me know what you think?
The sources mostly come from Russian media sources and open archive information regarding the event but it is all a bit hush shush because Putin gonna Putin.

In that Ethiopian Air crash the pilot was apparently wrestling for control of the airplane with one of the hijackers, when it crashed. Ditching in the ocean will always be dicey, but if the pilot had been allowed to actually do it properly, it is likely that the ditching would have gone somewhat better. edit: All things considered, that pilot did a great job.

There used to be a joke in the USSR about touring musicians: A quartet of violinists returns from an international competition. One of them was honored with the opportunity to play a Stradivarius violin, and cannot stop bragging about it. The violinist who came in last grunts: "What's so special about that?" The first one thinks for a minute: "Let me put it to you this way: just imagine that you were given the chance to fire a couple of shots from Dzerzhinsky's Mauser..." (For those not familiar, Dzerzhinsky was the head of the Cheka, the original predecessor to the KGB)

To be fair to the Soviet troops at that airbase, the Fins at the time and still do use their own version of the AKM as their standard infantry rifle (Forgotten Weapons has covered most of the variants by now), most versions are pretty visually distinct from you garden variety Soviet AKM but I'm not sure our "Heroes" would know the difference. Also, I bet that flag they mocked up was made from some conscript's bedsheet and shirt.

jazz was pretty popular in the ussr. i had quite a few musician friends from there and they seemed to plat freely -as long as the show did not involved unlicensed lyrics. the soviets had no issue with music and in fact encouraged visitors from other countries to tour in the ussr. their issue was with subversive lyrics, which was wy rock, was more of an issue for them. russians are also, from my impression very competitive on a personal level, and jazz , offers a good venue for them to show off and play against each other.

Wow, a trip from 1980s Siberia to 1980s Japan would have been quite the shock to the system. This is going from a place that was already economic doldrums in an entire country that was falling apart economically at this point to an economic powerhouse at the height of the bubble economy, when cash was just flowing like water through the whole system. (Seriously, Japan's bubble economy is *weird* from a capitalist perspective - it's like hyperinflation because the economy is genuinely doing that well, rather than because the government is printing off money at an irresponsible rate.)

Whole motivation of those hijacking shenanigans was being able to bring your whole family with you, which you couldn't do for international flights cause airports started to check for entire families boarding such routes as there were multiple successful escapes in such a manner previously.
