I'm loving these old videos. I've found a number of Cold War videos on YT, mainly British and US made ones, including some old TV documentaries. Really interesting stuff.

If I'm ever in a situation defending the Fulda gap from a large Soviet mechanised force I'll always remember to engage the vehicle with two antennas.

I’ve found a good number of these on YT and they’re great at looking at the mindset and gear of BAOR when they were produced. Great for airsofters or reenactors to take a gander at kit and the ideal scenarios for tactics.

I wonder how much of the footage from Europe was captured from the BRIXMIS missions.

We can only speculate. Could be a fun way of starting off a Cold War milsim. Both sides have a liaison team in the others lines.

Some perhaps. I remember seeing a lot of photos in Threat magazine/handbook of Sov vehicles like BRDMs on parades, with the note that they were in parade markings (white paint around the edges). These publications were classified as ''restricted'' not so much because we didn't want the Sovs to know how much we knew about their kit, but more because they could have found out the source of the photos - this was according to our Inf Bn Int/NBC Cell WO2.

I'm still not sure if this will apply to even milsim. However, it's interesting to see the old Soviet stuff none the less. BTW, I was right -your production standards are higher 😀

@@Russkyairsoft the Soviet designation used to be 'motor rifles' and in NATO we used those terms when describing units. You're right they are 'mechanized' or 'motorized' infantry (in actuallity they are all 'armoured infantry') but the name stems from the old WWII days i believe when divisions were either on trucks or horse drawn for their logisitics. Modern russian terminology may have changed but 'motor rifles' is correct for this period.
@Gadgeization
@Gadgeization 2 жыл бұрын
Its also important to remember (as in the video) that a 'motor rifles' formation was not just infantry , it had an integral tank element (roughly three inf elements to one armour in most) ... by comparision a 'tank regiment' would also include integral infantry in about the reverse proportion. It would also have its own armoured supporting elements like shilka air defence.

@@Gadgeization I know, Gadge. just establishing parallels with what I know from back in Russia ;) for me as a native it sounds a bit weird "motor rifle" but it is almost a straight letter-to-letter translation from "мотострелковое подразделение". another name for motorized infantry

recall the tories won another election on the fear of a them godless soviets invading , a bond movie reflected the similiar paranoid belief . timothy dalton and art malik rambo went kabulshit too. the beast , the 9th company , all the other movie followed on from there with all sorts of cold war melodrama , works better than naked propaganda, story telling .
