The diaphragm is loose, and they need to tighten it for some reason. Maybe crack on diaphragm, or crack on nozzle, or crack on power chamber. All those things could result in buzzing or squil sound. In other words, the horn need to be inspected and or repaired.

It's a more common practice than many people think! Alot of big steam engines are equipped with air horns for different reasons. Judging by this Russian engine's appearance, which appears to be a very fast passenger engine, I believe the horn was equipped to make it easier to hear from afar! Why it sounds like a ship... That's a new one 😅

In America, steam engine whistle for clear path. In Soviet Russia, steam engine blows foghorn for clear path.

Also in America, a small handful of steam locomotives have air horns. I mean look at SP 4449, MILW 261, IAIS 6988 & 7010, SP 2467, and that one other steam locomotive on the Boone and Scenic Valley Railroad all still have air horns.

I adopted my son from Russia in 2003, before Russia turned into a place of murder and violence. My son wants to revisit his birth city, but I told him when the war is over and when that terrible president “Putin” is out of office for good, we will revisit his birth city. While I was adopting him, I visited some of the rail museums and boy oh boy did I fall in love with every steamer I saw both on the National Reserve and in steam. The P36 and P38’s are among my favorite Russian steamers, but nothing outperforms my favorite: the AA20!

На паровозах стоит не тифон, а свисток. А подобный звук получился из-за того, что дроссель открыли на самое минимальное положение - чтоб не расходовать пар...
