It would be more terrifying if they showed german machine gunners firing sideways (as they actually did), instead of front-on. The Germans sited their machine guns to fire along the front of their positions (enfilade fire) in order to get maximum effect from them, so each gun supported several others. They never fired direct to their front as shown in this movie - and in just about every other movie :(

Well, the MG 42 was a great weapon. What I like about this scene is that as an MG gunner, you have to choose targets. your ammo is not infinite. If the enemy decides to charge you, you might think:"great, more people to shoot at!" but actually it is a moment of "oh, shit, they think they can take my position despite some losses, I am in trouble now". Also disregard the artillery comments. Yes, Artillery would be a factor in all engagements, that does not mean that situations like that where artillery did not happen would not happen, that´s just a silly assumption.

I don’t remember if this is true or not but in 1941 when winter was around the corner, is it true that Hitler’s generals told him to stop the advance on Moscow and dig in to secure their positions? Same for Stalingrad in 1943? If so then I feel like Hitler was an idiot for not listening. He could’ve had the 3 Army groups (North, Centre & South) protected in their trenches instead of being out in the open for Soviet counter offensives

I know something similar Hitler's generals wanted a full on retreat of army group centre during the soviet winter offensive of '41 but Hitler ordered his men to hold their ground and because of this, they actually retained large parts of territory and were only pushed back a bit. It's been theorized that a full on retreat would've caused the Wermacht to collapse, so this is were hitler got the idea he was more competent than his generals.

I think the Soviet tactics kept improving as they made there drive to Berlin. They learned to use air support as they moved and mobile artillery/rockets.
@MK_ULTRA4203 жыл бұрын
It's more that the Soviet soldiers could rely on air support now that the Luftwaffe no longer dominated the skies, and the Katyusha rocket artillery were a ground-breaking technology at the time; Katyusha operators were explicitly told that any crew that abandoned their trucks or let them fall into German hands would be court-martialed and executed. TL;DR The Soviets would have done it sooner if they could. They didn't particularly like charging into the enemy (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deep_operation ) but during the war there weren't better options given their lack of time.

@vitalisjakubauskas95673 жыл бұрын
Just from time to time the Soviet infantry used to charge after some shelling , more or less effective. But very often they used so called "the reconaissance by the battle". Then infantry used to charge (some battalion against a compaign) WITHOUT any shelling. Why? Soviet reconnaissance needed to know how many German weapons are located against this front line and where they located. It looks like tipical Soviet "reconaissance by battle" was showed in this video. They laid down a batallion , but they know how strong Germans are in this place.

Munitions worth 308 million pounds (several times the ENTIRE soviet GDP) 3000+ superior Hurricane planes: British The Soviet tankers' prefered tank? The Sherman tank Lend-lease narrowly saved the Soviets, something that the Russian propaganda worked hard to conceal. Also the quality difference... Valentines, Matildas and Shermans were all good tanks for their era. This is a quote from a training manual for Panzerstörtruppen in 1941, about the KV1 and T34: "Slow and unmoveable. Effect mostly psychological. Combat effectiveness very low." The manual goes on to describe how the crews are nearly blind and there are a plethora of ways to disable Soviet tanks with mines, brandflasche and gebalte ladungen. One thing that contributed a lot was that the Soviet slave-workers just didn't care. Why would they? They were slaves. So oftentimes there weren't even any 76 mm shells for their tanks to fire at all, or they had one or two for an entire battle.

Indeed. By 1944 they had enough guns, ammunition and transport. Besides, there are also tanks taking part. The major fuck up of an attack like this could have happened in 1941-1942 by a green inexperienced officer. In 1944 this would cost him his rank, and possibly life.
