Hey ya'll, I'm Jess from Roots & Refuge Farm
Welcome to a place that feels like home. A small farm with a big family. We hope you'll pull up a chair, grab some coffee and visit awhile.
There was a time that all I wanted in the world was a little farm where I could raise my family and grow our food. Now, that is exactly what exists outside my door. In watching it unfold, a new dream was formed in my heart - to share this beautiful life with others and teach them the lessons we've learned along the way. Welcome to our journey, friend. I am so glad you're here.

Yes to the sounds of kids and I'm 75. This year i had a family with 3 littles move in behind me. They brought the sound of music: playing happily, having tiffs, the cries of getting hurt. That is all beautiful music as I sit on my deck.

‘Jess made me do it’ I’m closer to 70 than I like to believe. In the70’s I subscribed to Mother Earth, belonged to a Food Co-op & tried to garden. Then life happened & I had to take care of me & my babies. I’m retired now. My youngest daughter lives on our dream property with her family. We have a huge garden, tooo many chickens and new adventures with my granddaughter Marigold every day. I found Jess & Miah on one of their Live talks & I fell in love. That spring we had a 20’x20’ garden. Year 2 was 40x40. Many have heard this story. This year we have 2 40x40 plots with butterfly gardens & herb & medicinal herb gardens. Had it not been for a Sunday night about 3 1/2 years ago I would probably be in a wheel chair instead of putting another batch of tomatoes sauce into the canner & Mari & I spent a lovely morning playing with our baby chickens.

God bless you. He does watch over us. I should be dead due to a driver running a red light on c excess of 75 mph, but a still, quiet voice urgently told me to stop as I began to give my vehicle some gas to start across the intersection. I heard. I stopped. And I'm alive today. No garden yet, need to container it all and only have full sun 105° summers. My rental was painted outside as well as my front door last fall which was left open for the paint to dry. Consequently I've spent winter, spring, and now most of summer eliminating all the mice that came in and got into everything!! Cleaning pantry, shelves, closets, boxed items, every nook and cranny to eliminate their residue, and the pantry and other products and items they damaged or destroyed. Must have been 25-30 of them and often they avoided the traps. What a mess!!

To one side of us there are children who clearly don't spend their days indoors, and are outside developing imaginations! Have never seen them, through all the trees. They pause to argue spiritedly about who knows what, then continue running around shouting excitedly most of the day. :) It's a great backdrop sound.

Hey Jess! I just wanted to share that I live in NC, and I planted carrots in July! It was in the 90s all summer, but they all germinated. I now have a raised bed full of carrots, tall and green and gorgeous. I did cover them with a sheet of roofing tin to keep out direct sunlight, but other than that I let them go. So it's possible to get them to germinate in high heat! I would definitely try it in this weather, since my experiment worked lol. I even made sure to post it to Facebook in case no one believed me 😆.

Hey y'all! I'm in Central Tx, and I hear ya about being burnt out bcuz of the heat!!! Phewwww!! I mean, it's just been monstrous & overbearing this year. Just HOW we sustained up to 112° & 113° for multiple weeks is beyond me!! Those kinds of temperatures just FEEL different when you're out there, don't they?! As someone who's been gardening for a few decades here in Texas, I would just like to give everyone a gentle reminder about gardening in the Fall & early Winter. Even tho I too am suffering from the beastly Summer temps, the Fall gardening period is what I most look forward to during these dog days of Summer. The joy of working out in the garden without melting your ears off is truly wonderful! The plants like it too! Right now, all my plants are in a holding pattern. Nobody is putting on loads of growth. This also has a lot to do with us being in a drought & so the plants are really only getting enough water to survive instead of thrive. (We never got our "Winter Rainy Season" last time. Maybe that weather pattern is permanently changing too? Any rain this Summer has passed us by too. The plants seem know it. We're all a little droopy over here this year!) All that being said- Fall gardening is soooo much nicer, that I tend to plan my garden harvests to AVOID the Summer harvest. Except for peppers. They LOVE the heat! That way I can take my garden break during July & August. In my area, we don't get super cold until end of January and on into February. Well, that's the "usual" pattern. Who knows what will be happening now... Wait - Nope. I'm not going to get discouraged!! I'm going to start my Fall garden in the next 2 weeks, and hopefully by the time October gets here, the temps will have gone down enough to actually wear long sleeves! And during that time I'll be able to get my hands back in the soil again! Instead of just wrapped around a watering can. So I guess my point is this- Yes, take your Fall & Winter break - this year. You do deserve a break for living in an actual OVEN. And then maybe alter your plans for next year a little bit. Plan on taking your garden break during July & August. Bcuz hey, it's just waaay too hot out there!! And I'm betting next year will be the same, El Nino or not. And then look forward to gardening in the months of September thru early January. That way you'll get a couple months break from July & August, and then again in late Jan thru early March too! (Excluding seed starting indoors of course!) Anyway, that's what I do to try and avoid the burn out from the heat. For the most part, it works pretty well. Good Luck everybody!!! 💚🌱💚

I am still harvesting them, plus I have noticed that I have several more coming up in places I did not plant them. I grew up in the Mohawk Valley of NY. Rutabaga gets sweet after the first freeze. We would pile hay over most root vegetables and harvest from under the snow. Snow is a great insulation.

Ugh Yes!!!! My son watered the garden yesterday and he turned up the pressure and took out at least 10 carrots seedlings. We tried to push them back in but.....I guess I'll be seeing more tomorrow lol

I just “read” aka listened to the book, A Place to Hang the Moon. Its WW2 era and such a beautiful story of 3 kids moving to the country to escape the city during war. Free from the library and so, so good 😭💛

I'm new here and I'm SO GLAD I found you! Gonna soak up all this wonderful info and try to have a successful garden - for once! :) I have two small raised gardens and am going to try to plant some cold weather crops and I'm going to try your "lettuce grown in a bag under a clear storage container" idea, too! Thank you for all the good info!

I've lived in SC for 70 years and this is the most abnormally cool August that I ever remember. August is normally our hotest most miserable month. Also June was abnormally hot. Go figure.
