Rewatching. I watched this last Jan. before I started my first year of serious gardening. I.e gardening beyond plonking whatever in the garden that came with our house. It was a good year for me. I’m going to sow seeds indoors this, or try to. Watching this again made more sense even than it did before. Those links to previous videos are great for reviewing. Thank you. I’m still a beginner gardener, 5 years total, 3 years growing my own seedlings, and last year was my first year growing a spring and fall garden. I love the the idea of the tray with large holes. I just discovered some cells with not only the holes, but slits on sides that allow roots to air layer. I purchased them today and wish they had 2” also. Im in US and found them at Bootstrap Farmer out of PA. They did have the heavy duty 2” cups but no air layer slits so I may modify. I’m switching to larger pots for tomatoes and peppers as I don’t like to up-pot, too much mess and cost. Starting those plants a bit later as well. When waiting for the weather to straighten out in spring they get too big. So hope I have it figured out. The thing about solid cell flats is you can’t separate them if something doesn’t take then there is a lot of wasted real estate. I would like to find a tray like you have for soil-handy. Great video!

As long as you are very careful with the watering when you have seedlings in bigger pots then I’ve done this a few times and it worked great. The potting on tray is called a greenhouse tidy (I prefer potting try). I got mine on Amazon

I know the whole point is to get away from plastic but I already have these trays. And if I used the wooden ones, it would be impossible to really use the heat mats, too, right? I don't mind potting up once, maybe twice, but anything more than that and I'm wondering why I didn't just plant in the bigger pot to start with. Then I remember it's usually because I didn't have enough space to put as many of those pots for the number of seeds I was planting 😂 So generally I start in smaller pots (cucurbits are one of my main exceptions), and then I pot up the ones that did actually germinate.

Hello from America! I just noticed just about everyone overseas uses compost for seed starting. Hmmm We use seed starting or potting mix for seed starting. It's peat moss with perlite. I noticed you said that you might use the deep tray to start carrots. We seed them direct in the garden. I am for sure going to try to start them indoors this summer for a fall crop! Thanks for the idea.
@eliandkate9 ай бұрын
Hey 😃 What you’ll find is that in the UK we often say compost but are actually talking about mixes, we also sometimes say soil. Just a lazy expression. It’s also a bit different here in that a lot of folk actually make their own mixes rather than buying them. As you see more of our videos from over the years you’ll see me making up my mixes. As for carrots etc… I start an awful lot of things in the greenhouse early rather than direct sow purely because it works better for me with my weather, but it’s more usual to direct sow something like carrots 🤪

@@eliandkate Thank you. I read on one of your many previous videos /comments - stating that it is less likely to produce leggy weak seedlings without lights (as they try to 'stretch' trying to find the light source if lights were installed). So, I am a bit confused - why are lights effective if they cause plants to become leggy in trying to reach for the lights? Cameron
@eliandkate2 жыл бұрын
Hmmm so generally they don’t but if you position them to far away the seedlings reach for them. A bit like when you grow on a window ledge, the seedlings lean towards the window

Do you have any sources for your US audience for the green trays and the black modular insert trays other than Amazon, as I have not been able to find any thick plastic trays/inserts there? I absolutely love your videos!
@LyndseyMacPherson2 жыл бұрын
I know--unlike in the UK, US gardening supplies are rife with throw-away flimsey plastics, etc. The heavier ones you can use over and over are so much nicer. Other alternatives I can think of include those little peat pots, but they're expensive and peat we now know may not be sustainably sourced. Maybe even better are the smallest size (2 or 3 oz) paper cups ("dixie cups" in the US), because they also can be replanted directly into a larger pot, bed, etc. once the seedling is established. I've used the little paper cups for plantings on a smaller scale, and they work pretty well, they disintegrate pretty much when you need them to. What I don't know is what's in that paper, and whether it's ecologically okay, but I feel better about not using plastic, at least.

To be honest I'm not sure, I generally only buy from British suppliers where I can but I'll see if anyone has any suggestions.
@shandysgarden2 жыл бұрын
A lot of times I go to Dollar Tree and I get bins and organizing supplies that are the right size and just drill holes in the bottom. Once you have that Gardener eye, we look at everything differently! Especially at the thrift store and yard sales and on the sides of the roads. LOL

I get so much info from your videos. Even though I’m in Rhode Island and we have more freezing temperatures, there’s still part of your weather that is similar to ours related to veg growing. Last year was my first year growing onions - Walla Walla- good all purpose onion. I was thrilled. Why can’t I grasp the difference between sets vs seed? Was told it doesn’t matter, was told onions are biennial ( then big academic explanation followed 🥴). Why do you choose onion sets vs seed?
@eliandkate2 жыл бұрын
I do my best to not get academic on the channel if I can (I don’t always manage but I try). Basically sets are just onions that have been grown from seed and sold as immature onions so you can get a head start. Some folk have issues with onion sets bolting because they are brought on too quickly for their situation so they prefer to grow from seed. Takes longer but less likely to bolt. It’s 6 and 2 3s really :D
@terrym88302 жыл бұрын
It’s what I love most about your videos. They’re just enough info and if one is interested in more details, one only needs to look further. Also, got a smile from your “6 and 2 3’s”. Took me a second , in the U.S. we say “ 6 of one, half dozen of another “.

I wanted to check with you regarding the seed trays, I went to the website but realized they do not ship to anywhere in the EU. Hey lovely to have you as part. Of our wee community, lovely to have you 😍 I’m afraid I can’t recommend anywhere in Italy that have similar trays and modules, sorry. Basically they are solid instead of the crinkly plastic and I’m seeing more folk in the states do this type of stuff now so I’m sure someone in Italy must too. I’ll keep my eyes peeled for you and shout if I hear of anything.

Wow, after we agreed that we were near last frosts, Inverness is frozen, snow pushes the temp up😂 Can I really just pop my onion sets in a module tray and leave them in a chilly greenhouse? If the answer is yes, I'll be a happy but cold Highland lass! I assume they then go outside when I can dig the bed? BTW we've had snow in June before, just not right 👎

Oh Amanda, I don't know what it's like for you in Inverness but yup generally in Scotland you can grow your sets on in the greenhouse until the ground thaws. We've got snow forecast for tomorrow.
