Insane dirt bike mud enduro motocross race with 50+ riders! This was crazy, I couldn’t believe how slippery it was… the bike was drifting all over the place.
Alright, clickbait keywords ^ out of the way… here’s a real description for those of you that read these: The morning dawned cold, wet and miserable. As had plenty of others in the weeks leading up, with both the Tasman and Marlborough districts experiencing flooding the likes of which they’ve never seen before! Needless to say, I was able to guess that we were in for a mudder… but what I could never have predicted, was the way the usually hard, dry and rocky Marlborough, New Zealand terrain (wine country) would take the downpour. Far from becoming boggy, it simply ate all of the weather and somehow remained hard… instead turning into perhaps the slipperiest paddock I’ve ever experienced! Admittedly I still had the stock, road-legal tyres on my new WR which don’t have the tallest knobs, but even with better ones I doubt there would have been much grip to go around. The format was an endurance motocross race… so, three hours or 180 minutes from gate drop to chequered flag. And with me having only ridden a handful of times in the past 12 months, I was in for a long day! But I did have a couple of things going for me. The WR, aside from having excellent chassis, suspension and engine, presented three distinct advantages; the fuel light, which took any guess work out of refuelling, its radiator fan which nullified any potential mud-related overheating issues, and… well, you’ll just have to wait and see what the third one was 😈
