Very useful tip for non musicians (like me). I was also trying to figure out ways of finding the key of a sample in Ableton Live. If you crop a sample, then right click on the clip and 'convert harmony (or melody)', Ableton will convert the sample into a series of MIDI notes with the keys of each note visible on the left of the display. I'll try using this tutorial with Ableton Live to find the key of a sample.

Easy way: press a note and if that note sounds good over the whole loop then it is probably the key. Then just understand the difference between major and minor keys.

Nice video. Good explanation. I've heard of a program (I think it's free) called Key Finder that allows you to put audio samples into said program and it will tell you the key of your samples. I think it's more popular with dj's. Could save ya a lot of time though.

dope video brotha...i use reasons and an maudio and have been stuck watching like 3 videos from you....im more of an orignal composer and thats been my downfall is never learning to sample and use both strengths instead of only one...definitely has limited my versatility with making beats...awesome brotha....subscribed! 👊

You were playing a major scale to find the key if the key of the sample was minor this technique would not work unless you played a minor scale to find the key.

Relative minor, once you've found a key that's pretty identical to the sample. Use the relative minor to see if that one fits better, that beats playing A-G major and minor to look for a key.

I'm not at a keyboard or piano but I think the key is B minor which is the relative minor to D natural...the best way to to find the key of a song is to listen for tonic... or home base the note that seems to resolve the tension... the word snow in Mary had a little lamb is tonic find what that note ends on and you have the key.

Drag your sample in to Newtone and it will show u all the notes being played
@Betazeta
@Betazeta 6 жыл бұрын
the root note in chords is often played twice and/or is usually the first note of the chord progression, edison has been absolutely the best way to detect pitch regions for me, even though going by ear isn't that hard or bad, you'll just end up with a mess that you need to fix post production

aye bro that sample was def b minor... d major is the relative major scale but b is tonicized so it def the key. noticing when you were playing those chords how the one with b in the base felt like the home chord. you might wanna make up a follow up for minor
@Khrene
@Khrene 6 жыл бұрын
Trevor Ellis-Guice Ain't the 3rd note in a scale also tonicized? That's why relative keys work, yeah? I think the only thing that makes the scales different is context, or in other words which note is played first/more often. Still though, that's b - minor

You should give me a sample like this and let me flip it.... I think the way you explain what you're trying to teach may be a bit confusing. Bottom line - You want people to find the scale that works with that beat, then create chords from those keys within that scale and find out what works progressively. Cool though.

Hey bro thanks a lot for your awesome tutorial! I have a Whole other problem.. im New to beat making and playing around with samples.. ny problem is i tried to sample a vocal sequence of a 60s style cover of (coincidentally) Ellie Goulding 's burn.. but MY problem is that i can't figure out how to fit the tempo to the sequence. I tried to tune it to fit but because they sing with a swing to it, i still have parts of the sequence that are off beat even though the entire length of the sample (tuned) fits the bpm.. I hope you can clarify.

How long did it take you to make good beats? ive been trying to make beats for like like 2 months and my stuff is sooooo trash. my sequence is all messed up and i just cant get it right. right now im using logic and it is kind of confusing. I use a Akaimpk49 to make beats. i am really dedicated in trying to make music, im even teaching myself how to play the keys, after the keys will be the drums. Does it take time and i just have to wait longer to get it right?
