Great idea to use a company with the forestry mulcher. Amazing amount of work to get done so quickly. Definitely worth the investment. Your time is worth the cost!

Had a young man come out for 3 days last year. The most amazing use of man and machine I ever did to reclaimed many acres of over grown brush and cedar trees. Now I’m pasturing bacon on the cleared forest and left the hickories to mature. My face hurt for days I was smiling so hard!!!

I did this when i bought 20 acres and built my home in NC…it was 2800 for 1.5 days of work, but i believe it saved me about 40 days of labor, the land was so overgrown and unmanaged…covered in poison ivy…once he got the trails in, i could get my equipment in and ive been cutting trees down, dragging brush…for about 2 years…still…tons more wildlife though…more turkeys, more deer…

It’s amazing how much 1 machine can do in a day and you didn’t even break out in a sweat , a lot of people think it’s expensive to hire machinery but if you break it down in time saved you can move onto other projects instead of concentrating on one project for twelve months. Money well spent.

Yeah me too! In the early 60's there was only chainsaws to cut everything by hand with a lot of manual labor. The same for clearing /picking rocks out of the crop fields, by hand. And most were dumped in the fence rows along the fields. Now days they have a piece of equipment that goes on your skid steer to pick up rock. It rotates to shake out the dirt so you can just get the rocks.

A mini excavator with a quick detach system and auxiliary hydraulic connection (most come with that), you can put a mulcher head on it and do close to the same thing you just did here. Then of course you can take the mulcher off and use your buckets. Also, you can put things like augers on the excavator to dig fence post holes, cutter decks for bush hogging etc. Just some tips here to increase your knowledge of equipment since you said you are learning it.👍🏻

You should really look into a compact tractor 4x4 with front-end loader with bush hog box blade, and then one get a plow a dirt scoop a disk or tiller, and a Harley rake. They also make a small forestry mulcher for small compact tractors now

That looks truly fantastic. If you do not mind the asking, how much did he cost you for the day? In my area it is well over $2500 just to rent one of those for a day. If he cost you anything less than $7,000 for the day, I would say it was a steal. You definitely paid for his expertise and not the machine. Just be aware that will all of that new sunlight on those areas, it will come back quick fast and in a hurry. You probably do NOT want clear the mulch out he made. that will help to keep some of the stuff from growing back, will help revitalize the soil and help your vehicles to not sink when it is wet.

do you own a tractor if so get a flail mower attachment and you could knock this kind of thing out yourself and keep it maintained yourself.if you dont own a tractor look into a machine called a Skag its also a flail mower but one you can walk behind it uses chains to keep the weeds and growth down ..its strong enough to smash up bricks and stones if not over sized.

BACKDRAGGING is the term used when he backs the machine up to regrind what was just cut. The more backdragging the smoother the outcome. Our experience has shown that it takes about two years for all the mulch that is left behind to deteriorate. We’ve had a forestry mulcher at our place several times and waiting for drier weather for a return visit. Tim in northern TN

I bought a forestry mulcher when first moved to a farm, fence lines grown over. Thick brush, 12” diameter trees, prickly pear cactus, mulched it all. A year later was some of the best native grass on the place, did not pick up any debris caused by the mulcher. But that would be your call. Also bought a skid loader and other attachments, it’s unbelievable what you can do with one of those machines.
